  1. This is a fun thread to read. I think I posted this before . 1084 gl has 310k and recently passed CA smog with flying colors. Wrote to Subaru and sent pics when I hit 300K and they sent me a hat, coffee cup and some decals and reported that they have heard from some owners with over 650k on their subies.
  2. my son pd a guy to replace front brakes but day after job done the right side is smoking. i'm pretty far away so can't look at it. sounds like dragging to me and or grease or oil. not sure if it is pulling right but assume it is. what can i have himask the mechanic. today the mechanic is changing the rear brakes. any advice helpful. thanks
  3. I really don't have one but I passed up on one several months ago. It was a 2008 Outback with only a couple thousand miles on it for $2500. That's right $2500 in perfect condition. You see, the person who owned it was a soldier killed in Iraq and the grieving parents just wanted to get rid of it fast. I just couldn't take advantage of the situation but someone else did.
  4. what kind of carb are you putting in? how many miles are on it and all that good stuff?
  5. If someone would make up a bumper sticker for the Over 200k or 300k or more Subie club, I'd buy a couple. rsd
  6. Today I couldn't get the ECS light to come on. The only thing i did differently was take the air cleaner cover off and i took the evaporative cannister out to check the filter. I plugged up the hose that was sucking air. it's been idling for the last 40 minutes without the light coming on. before it would come on at about 15 minutes. i still have not checked the duty solenoids, plugs, O2 sensor , and the other stuff yet. my sniffer ( nose ) is plugged so i can't smell any excess gas if there is any.
  7. I read with interest the high mileage of ej22 subies on another thread, one had 491k on it and one had 1.7 mil with two motors. I have had 7 different subies and all except one has had over 200k on them. All but one is or was had an E81 motor. The best of them had 277k before it died and my current 84gl has 308k and still running strong. I wrote to Subaru of America and sent them pics and they were kind enough to send me a Subie coffee mug and a hat. they also told me there have been several owners who had well over 600 k miles on their original Subaru motors. so, what is the highest you have seen on any Subaru, especially on E81 motors but any would do. i like looking at the odometers at the Pick n Pull . Ive seen a lot over 300k and only one over 400k. rsd
  8. as many as it takes, ha ha. what kind of quality do you want? at wally world you can get spray paint for 96 cents a can. i just painted my 84 gl with a brush with WM oops paint that cost $7.88 for the gallon and I only used a third of the gallon. I could paint 3 cars for less than $8. post your results, please . I like your idea.( but won't steal it )
  9. yes, the ECS light comes on after about 15 minutes . I think you already told me to check a sensor behind the carb . haven't done that yet.
  10. the co level was high at idle but not tested at 2500. haven't checked your listed issues yet
  11. Thanks all for the tips. I changed the filters as suggested, checked vac hoses. made sure chock was open when warm. the reading that was too high was the CO reading. HC was not high. Also, it is a Hitachi carb. I can smell gas. mechanic said I might have to rebuild the carb. are there kits for this and are they worth rebuilding? i am gonna continue checking the sensors, etc and eliminate possibilities before tearing into the carb. seems to be a lot of members in the reno/tahoe area and would like to meet some of you. thanks
  12. a date would be nice so we can schedule the week off.

  14. I've been rooting around old threads on smog problems bc my 84gl wagon is too high on the co2 . I'm burning out the old gas, put a new fuel filter on and am gonna replace the Oxygen sensor. Also , I think it is running too rich but don't know how to lean it out. I thought , also , that you would want to run hotter plugs. Why run the fan and cooler plugs? Just wondering if you ever fixed your problem. BTW I used to work for Wallace Transport in Planada and they used to have a yard in Turlock. If you have a CDL they will hire you.
  15. yes, this does help. that is why I posed this question to see what kind of options I have. I have heard of this ken in tahoe but can't locate him. I have very little mechanical ability and hardly any tools so I have to pay someone. yesterday I tried to take off a front axle and even following edrachs directions i came to a deadend bc i don't have the proper tools and knowledge. I've only had the car 4 years and put 80k miles on it. The odometer only works half the time so i don't know the true miles. guess would be 175-200k . But i do agree with the poster about breaking down the cost of a $3000 repair bill down to $750 a year to have a good reliable vehicle again instead of gambling with a strange motor. If i could do the work i would gamble with a $600 motor ( it's only 15 miles from me . )
  16. I am a fellow sufferer. have had 7 so far and another on the way. currently have three. curious about your name , mellow65. my nickname in MA was mellow but that was in the 80's.
  17. I agree one million percent about CA smog laws. I've got two 84gls. One passed easily , the other won't. I've been tempted to to switch the plates if i knew for sure they wouldn't check the VIN.
  18. I forgot to mention that there was a video on You Tube on how to do some of this that may be helpful. He showed that you can thread on the castle nut a little bit and place the socket over it and hammer the axle out that way. It seems that if it was hard going, wouldn't that damage the threads?
  19. This is great. I ordered my axle from MWE based on what I read here. I had to get a new one for my 84gl for only $20 more. I'm gonna use this thread to try it today.
  20. that's why I come to this site. i want to look at all the options. I just towed the car out of a Reno area shop that quoted me $2500 starters and then there was a lady there with the same problem and it ended up costing here over $4000 ! This is for a 10 year old car. I just can't do it. I am gonna talk to this other guy about the Atarrco motor for $1500 or there are a lot of junkyard motors I may have an option on. I thought about a 2.2 but i heard here before there might be smog issues since I live in CA and it has a different wiring harness? Well. I don't like to make snap decisions. ( That shop was none too happy about pulling the car out . They wouldnt even give mr the time of day. I had to ask for the key twice and I had to use the ph to call AAA and you'd think I was asking too much ) i know I made the right decision pulling it as If i had a problem with their work I probably would of gotten trouble with them making it right. I don't like repair shops. I had a GREAT mechanic who retired this year. It took several years to find him. RSD
  21. Thanks for this tutorial. it is a little different from the procedure described in "How To Keep Your Subaru Alive" They say to remove brakes and caliper. I'm gonna try it tomorrow. ( with MWE )Too bad you couldn't post an instructional video. i always understand better by watching a video than reading instructions. i checked You-Tube and they have a couple good basic videos on front axle removal. does anyone else know any good instructional videos on this procedure on the net?
  22. ? have a choice on my 2.5 Outback $2500-3000 for headgasket job that includes clutch, HGs, water pump, timing belt , etc. or $1500 for one of those 45k Japenese motors and $500 labor to exchange. I should get another 100k miles either way, right? pros and cons?
  23. 1.8 4wd ( select ) with, i believe is a stock Hitachi. I read an article from Ecomodder blog when gas was running 4 dollars about the proper way to drive for max mpg. basically, get up to speed fast and watch traffic closely to avoid coming to complete stop, glide down hills, take all unecessary weight out of car ( i took out pass seat, and bench seat ) took off roof racks too. first time I drove like this I got 38 mpg! but it is kind of boring going 50-55 all the time on the freeway. now i average 33-35 mpg what's so amazing about this is that this car has over 300,000 miles on it.
