update today. fan comes on when it is supposed to and ran heater and blower and it blows hot. ran it for 20-30 minutes and it only got up to 185-90 and fan on all the time. let it cool off to add more water to radiator. ( at least half an hr ) restarted. this time heater blew cool air and it started overheating just a couple minutes after fan came on. not sure what is different. as i recall now, my son told me sometimes the heater blew hot and sometimes lukewarm and sometimes cool. is this the t-stat or something else?

still in tahoe. retired now. gonna part out one of my 84gls as i have the time. thanks for reply. this 84 only has 177k on it so it is worth fixing. i have one with 333k and it still runs great. ya temp creeps up toward the top and then i shut it down. would the definitive test be a compression check? thats next on the list anyway. i agree the bearings and shaft may be scored. not sure how long or far the kid ran it without oil. he was afraid i would yell at him. he didnt tell me for 3 months after the fact so we had no recourse against the oil change place.

1984gl. Motor runs great but after 10 minutes slowly, i mean very slowly starts to overheat. Been reading every thread here on EA81 head gasket issues and someone suggested it may be intake manifold gasket failure? how to tell the diff between this and head gaskets? do you do a compression check first? if i do have to do the head gaskets are the intake manifold gaskets automatically replaced as well? my main question would be how to pinpoint problem ? already have replaced water pump, t-stat, flushed radiator. everything easy. i posted story last year that my son got the oil changed and they did not put oil back in and he fortunately stopped after a few minutes when he noticed a problem. not sure if major damage was done. we started it and ran it 5-10 minutes about 10 times and it runs nice and smooth and makes no noises and always shut it off after it started creeping up past normal point. oh, ya. oil has been changed twice and is very clean. no milk or water. would it be simple just to change the intake gaskets or does this story suggest obvious head gasket failure?

i thought i updated for everyone. watched you tube videos and took tranny out and to shop. it was the VC. the guy had some used parts to replace a damaged gear and tail section. labor was very reasonable. it only took 10 hrs to reinstall tranny ( ha ha ). never have attempted this before. well, it has been going strong for last 6000 miles. knock on wood. thanks everyone.

current 84 gl 333,333 97 legacy L 270,439 99 outback 293.865 84 mile daily commute to work adds up. now retired so maybe 20 miles a week to store, ha ha -
you can buy the wrecked subie back from the insurance company for next to nothing and have a parts car . I would never buy a subie with a 2.5 motor unless the owner could show me a receipt for a head gasket job. where I live near Reno there are a lot of these for around 3 grand. otherwise get an older subie with the 2.2. we have a 97 legacy L with a 2.2 with 263000 miles on it and it runs great ( knock on wood. it gets around 33mpg and is more quiet ride than the outbacks we have had.

Bennie WOW!!!!!!!!! now that's love!!! for me it comes down to economics and the climate. I have no heat and we have winter 6 months a year. plus the rear end has been making noise for the last 5-6 years and it just got much worse. I still drive it around town for now. with smog, registration and such it will be about $200 but the repairs would probably be hundreds more and plus a ton of my time. im gonna retire it for now. I have 2 other 84 gls. the better one looks almost like yours and it only has 171k on it. the motor and tranny in this one has 333k miles but it runs great. im gonna keep the whole car whole until I retire this year and then go from there and decide if I want to retire or rebuild. I have to do head gaskets in the 171k gl and a lot of small things but the body and skeleton is in very good shape so that is gonna be my first project. I was floored by your pictures. appreciate your responses. I will definitely update.

my ol reliable friend for the past 11 plus years. I bought her for $650. have gone 80,000 nearly trouble free miles. with 333,000 plus miles she is starting to show here age with squeaks, squeals, clicking, vibrations, and clunks. funny thing is , is that the motor runs great and tranny is smooth. she gets between 30-35 mpg and passes smog with no problem. however its the bones that are starting to go. front suspension is wearing out. I think the rear end is starting to go with clicking, clanging and squealing coming from back along with an occasional clunk when engaged in 4wd. have checked axles and shocks or struts. they seem to be fine. the rear end has been clicking for years. now there is an occasional clanging. serious enough for me to stop using it for my 85 mile daily commute. its a real shame if I have to put her out to pasture. this was my go to vehicle when I lost my head gaskets first on the 99 OB and then 5 years later when I lost the tranny. this girl did all the heavy lifting..... literally. dozens of trips over the years for heavy loads of firewood. she was featured in the local newspaper as a Woodstock art car a couple years back. its covered with pictures from the 1960's. I think some pics of it were posted here back then. I even had some interest from some prince in Dubai when I posted it on craigslist there when I posted it for sale as a joke for $17 million dollars. with the cost of potential repairs, smog and registration, it probably is not worth it. I have another 84 with a good body and frame with only 177k on it. I can transfer the motor and tranny in it so this amazing vehicle can live on. thank you "World Famous Penguin Car" and thank you Subaru.

99 OB was sitting for almost a year. have driven it about 250 miles. 40 miles at a time on the hwy. when I park I feel the front disks and they are too hot to touch. I don't feel any noticeable drag at any speed. have taken foot off throttle at 10-20 mph and don't hear anything or it doesn't slow down faster than normal. but this does not seem normal. haven't filled the gas tank yet to see if fuel economy has suffered. already checked the fluid which is fine and the lines. what kind of checks can I do? is this common after sitting for awhile? thanks.

I was thinking about this yesterday when I drove my outback for the first time in 11 months and it was idling roughly and accelerating poorly. I know I should of put some stable in the tank but did not. also did not put any dry gas in. after 40 miles I did top off with 7 gallons of 91 octane gas and for the 40 mile trip home and it ran like old times. i.e. very well with good performance. so I was wondering if these fuel injector cleaners, dry gas, and other fuel additives really work? or just use the recommended octane gas or maybe an occasional bottle of alcohol? I have used "guaranteed pass" on my older cars when they didn't pass smog on the first go around and then every single time after using this stuff, they passed smog easily.

wheel bearing or axle?
roadsubiedog replied to roadsubiedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
for everyone with a similar problem. found an excellent videos from chris fix on youtube on how to tell if you have a bad inner/outer tie rod and also a vidro on how to replace. its easier for me to see how instead on reading how. -
