86 Barn Find Brat - Gas tank or pump Questions?
TomRhere replied to Thundar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think the problem lies with the pick up in the tank vs. any thing wrong with that valve. If the valve was bad, you would still get an initial flow of fuel. Clean the lines, see if that helps. -
86 Barn Find Brat - Gas tank or pump Questions?
TomRhere replied to Thundar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Picture shown above of the circled valve is showing the 2-way valve, located in the fuel vapor line. The 2-way valve functions to control the pressure in the tank. When the tank has pressure in it above a preset point, valve "A" opens to allow vapors to the charchol canister. When tank pressure is bellow a pre-set point, valve "B" opens to allow fresh air in to tank. '83 FSM Section 5, page 48, figure 5-60. For what ever reason, I can't post actual copy of said page/description. -
86 Barn Find Brat - Gas tank or pump Questions?

That valve allows the tank to breath as in letting vapors out and air in. Nothing to do with fuel flow. I just remove the nuts at the mounts on the end of the mustache bar and let it swing down some when I need to drop a tank. -

1987 GL Rear Hub Seal and Outer Racer
TomRhere replied to ellevehc's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just noticed I forgot to include the FWD numbers, which is what you needed. D'OH!!!! -
Google alloy rim repair. There is a few places in Washington. The gouge can be filled and smoothed out. The bend can be straightened, but it's not for the novice to do.

Bought my 1st BRAT in '02, a '86 GL. Since then I've had '82, '84 Auto, another '86 and a '85, all GL's. All were DDs until I either sold them or parted them out do to rust. Still have the '82. One of these days I'll get it going again. Not much highway driving done, mostly back roads, and the drive to/from work is 64 miles. Upper twenty's for mileage stock carb or Weber.

Sounds like the rear springs have the struts topped out. May have to cut the springs down a coil or two.

1987 GL Rear Hub Seal and Outer Racer
TomRhere replied to ellevehc's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
National Seal numbers for the rears For 4WD inner 224015 outer 225005 For FWD SKF 22225 or National 1984 We call the piece a cone washer, Subaru calls it a "center piece axle" or some thing similar. Contact ShawnW on here, he can hook you up with parts. -
You really do want the blade to be wider than the track width of the vehicle.

Weber adapter has to match intake manifold. Stick with the EA81 radiator. They are 2-core and have the fittings for the auto trans cooling lines, basically a one size fits all. The EA82 radiator will fit, but the mounting points are different, so you would have to make it fit. Move lower pin-mount holes, move upper mounting bolt holes.

Brat Rear Disc Brake Swap Question(s)
TomRhere replied to spatulaisgod's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
From the pic, looks like someone did a 6-lug conversion to it. You need pads for the EA82 Turbo models, or the XT6. Same calipers/pads. A 5-lug swap would most likely be the XT6 vs. the EJ ones. Don't the EJ's have rear e-brake? That would be the determining factor there. -
Looking good. Fairly certain I have a good PS headlight trim piece out in the garage. To answer the question of fan wire colors, yes on the Blue & Yellow being for the fan. EA81's had a single electric fan for non-A/C, 2nd electric fan added for A/C, mounted on the DS of radiator. Speaking of radiators, that one is neither EA81 or EA82. At least it doesn't match any that I've seen, stock or after market.

The XT6 vents are all electric, no vacuum. I will look at the diagrams and see if I can help you figure out the issue. Which relay was getting hot?

TomRhere replied to RedSasha's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just for the record. Subaru part number 806927010 for the O-ring. -
Always fun to sort out all the issues with a newly purchased vehicle.

CLUTCH PROBLEMS EA81 1985 Brat
TomRhere replied to tdodge41's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry I couldn't take your call. Mouth is all fubar right now from late afternoon dentist visit. But no, I have never touched the clutch assembly in that BRAT. Adjusted the cable, but that's about it. -
Check the coupling steering column to steering rack. Also, rear suspension issues can cause loose feeling steering at higher speeds, so check things over back there.

84 GL Wagon - Ignition/Starter/Battery problem
TomRhere replied to JustGo_GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Starter contacts could be issue here. Starter Repair Kit; HELP #02349 Un-bolt the fusible link box and flip it over to inspect the underside. I have had corrosion issues there. But the "open the hood for a few minutes" makes me think the starter itself is culprit. It's not liking the heat from the engine bay. -
CLUTCH PROBLEMS EA81 1985 Brat
TomRhere replied to tdodge41's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Throw-out bearing is the only thing I can think of also. And yes, stick with the '84 model year for parts. I've gotten the EA82 stuff to many times using the year of the BRAT I was working on, that '85, and 2 '86's. -
Sad news indeed. Condolences to his Family.

Nice looking BRAT. Liking the tie-down rings.
