Thanks. Found that thread on the front seal/bearing replacement. Most excelant.... Opted not to do the stub swap for now. Do appreciate all of the info provided though.

Over the long weekend, I got more accomplished. Swapped out the XT6 crossmember for a different EA82 one. Not only did I have to open up the LCA holes in it so the pivot bolt would fit thru. I had to slot the holes about a 1/4" toward the bottom. Fun, fun, fun... Dug out the EA81 that was in my 1st '86 BRAT, and started swapping needed parts over to it. Going to run a Weber on it for now, until I can amass all of the needed/missing SPFI parts. Just need to swap the clutch disc out for the EA82 one and shes ready to go in. Did entertain the idea of stuffing one of the ER27 engines in there, but decided it was way to much hassle to do so. Darnit... Opted to run the FTAWD 5-speed for now. It's in the Wagon, all bolted down with new mounts. Had thought of swapping the axle stubs on the trans between this one and the D/R 5-speed, but decided against it. I'll just buy the correct axles to install the D/R at a later date. Did find a lot of interesting stuff while looking up info on swapping the axle stubs... I should have the engine bolted in tonight, and mostly hooked up. Then it's on to the rear of the Wagon. Hoping to have it capable of sitting on the tires by Friday. Still have all of the brake work yet to do, but I need to be able to roll it out of the garage. Got a couple other vehicles what need attention.

Thanks to all.. Going to have to spend more time reading the links, but I'm liking what I see.

Ummmm, two what? And Thanks to both of you. Atleast I know it can be done. I've rebuilt a few RWD Manual and Auto trans, so this won't be my 1st one, just the 1st Subaru trans. Time to go, 'In Search Of' info.

Doing a 5-lug swap on my '88 Wagon, main issue right now is inner DOJ fitment. Don't have the available cash right now to buy the '93-'94 Impreza FWD MT axles required for this swap. So,,,, Is it possible to swap the axle stubs over between the 2 trans? I have both here, but have never opened a Subaru trans before, so I'm lost to begin with. Just wondering if it's possible, and if anyone has a walk-thru they could give me. All I have for manuals on the car are Haynes and Chiltons. Not much help there for me.

12-26; Spent time dry-ragging the gunk off all the front end components, yeehaa.. About 4 hours work there... Bolted in the front knuckles and radius rod brackets. Installed the trans crossmember twice, as I put it in backwards the 1st time. Installed the XT6 steering rack. Hooked up the steering column, and ran the PS lines. Collected together all of the rear 5-lug items so I knew where they be. Took inventory of all brake hoses and lines that need to be replaced. Pondered the idea of going with the FTAWD trans for now, instead of waiting on needed DOJ's to run the D/R 5-speed. Discovered that most of the completed work was pointless as I discovered that the XT6 engine crossmember has the motor mount holes further forward than the EA82 one. So, I get to swap the crossmember out. Yippie-yea.....

12-24; Un-did the PO's rework of the strut towers and bolted in the XT6 struts. Dropped the modded engine crossmember out, and removed the HH so I could clean up the mess from brake fluid. Installed an XT6 engine crossmember after drilling the proper mounting hole on each side. Located items to install a good EA82 PS rack, but may opt to install the XT6 one. Got the XT6 knuckles assemblies ready to be installed, complete with control arms and radius rods. Made sure I knew where the new motor and trans mounts were. Sure wish I had the money for a 4" lift kit right now. (sigh) But it was nice to have a warm garage to work in again.

Real sad part about it is, None of the hackage was nessecary! The EA82 engine fits between the framerails of the EA81 body without the need of modification. It's a tight fit, less than 3/8" on either side, but it fits. A PO stuffed one into the '82 BRAT I have.

Whats broke on your subaru lately.
TomRhere replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Lost the 'Defrost' setting in my '85 BRAT this last Thursday. All other settings function normal. So,,, I get to have the fun of working up under the dash later today. Also need to thaw-out the washer fluid tank and lines. Didn't get it swapped over to the de-icer stuff in time, and it all froze this week. -
Ignition switch could be cause also. On my '85 BRAT, I have to tweek the key back towards me every now and then to get the heater blower to run.

Been a few XT6 owners that switched to ATF vs the Cybrid Fluid, as it's getting hard to find.

Subaru EA 82 timing Help help help
TomRhere replied to ajs425's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I know I played "Heck" with my '82 BRAT that had an EA82 engine in it,,, trying to get the cam timing right without the aide of the "T-Belt" marks. (I had pulled the engine for a total reseal, and didn't know about the 3 "l l l" marks for T-belt timing that the EA82 has.) Lesson learned there....... edit; A PO had swapped the EA82 in using the EA81's flywheel. Didn't transfer any markings... -
Subaru EA 82 timing Help help help

If you were to bolt the EA81 and EA82 flywheels together with the crank bolt holes all properly aligned you will find that; 0* on EA81 flywheel reads 6* BTDC on the EA82 flywheel. Recently did simular here, only EA81 engine into EA82 and used the EA82 flexplate as car had Auto trans. -
Spent some time out in the garage today. Got it up on jackstands so I can start swapping the suspension stuff over to the 5-lug setup. Got the front all out and on the floor. Swapped another rear trailing arm in on the PS. (lost that bearing on the trip home with it) Pulled the drum brake parts off of both sides, and found that the DS rear has a worn bearing in it. So,,, I get to swap trailing arm on that side now. I'm believing that the other spare DS arm has good bearings. If not, I do have new bearings here, just not sure on the needed seals. My back started complaining from all of the fun I had today and yesterday, so I be done for the day. I am way happy about how the underside of this Wagon looks. I'll try to get some pics of it as I go. But I don't own a camera anymore, so....

( had to edit pic as original didn't work no more) This is the Wagon I picked up 11-20-10. Got's lots of work to do to get it back on the road, but I'll get r done. Good clean body, way better than anything I could get around these parts. Not sure of what engine I have here that will wind up in it, just know it will have the D/R 5-speed in it. Got everything here to do an XT6 5-lug swap on it, so thinking that will happen. Played around out in the garage today to make room for it. I'm way that it actually fits and I can walk around it. Now, just waiting for parts to get here for my heater so I can be toasty warm wrenching on it. But I'll do some playing with it until then, just not much.... One thing I'm POed at myself for doing, is getting rid of the '88 GL10 FWD Wagon we had here, before I got this one home. I find I be needing things that I could've snagged from it. Oh well, "stuff occurs"!!!! I'll make do in the meantime. Major Kudo's to boxerbob for allowing me to get this from him for "FREE"!

""BRATs (Brumbys) were standard in Australia with a crank driven mechanical fan."" I, did not know that. Don't recall ever reading about that setup before either. My 1st thought when reading the opening post was, someone has swapped an EA82 engine in there. Didn't know about the difference in the climate controls either. I learned something.

Questions about my new 85 Brat
TomRhere replied to Tonyp5143's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
1 & 2. May find answers here. http://www.suberdave.com/USMB/HTKYSA.PDF 3. No direct replacement rocker is available for the BRATs. Have read on here that one from another model can be "made to fit". That's one I have yet to try, but am in serious need of doing, to both of mine... 4. http://www.indysworld.com/80s/general/USRM/domelight/domelight.htm There is no cure for the affliction. My Wife surely wishes there was one though. I currently own 2, and have owned 3 others in the past 9 or so years. I am so wanting MORE!!!! -
Welcome to the Board!!! I realize things are done differently in other Country's, but I don't recall ever hearing of a BRAT with a mechanic fan as orginal equipment.. One electric fan for non A/C, and two electric ones for A/C is the norm for the States. I would swap in another thermostat, from Subaru, to begin with. Radiator is 20 some years old, if it's the original one. Could be it's clogged up some. New one is preferred over trying to clean the one in there now. A mild overheat shouldn't do any damage to the engine. As long as it was just for a short period of time. Long period of time spent with it in the Red, would be a different story. There is an idle-up system on these for A/C equipped vehicles. If you have A/C, it could be the cause of the high idle, if you have the selector set for Defrost. Just a few things off the top of my head there.... Would be nice to see pics of under the hood....

The 2 EA82 short blocks I have here both have a B and UP on the pistons. One block is a carb model, other is SPFI.
