Hot-Rodding a Brat in two stages - Suggestions?
TomRhere replied to RAD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just pretend it's not yours and you just stole it. Get out there and beat the snot out of it. You'll be surprised at how well it will like that. I've ran a few of my EA81's up to 60 mph in 3rd, that's spinning things pretty good. Keep oil in them, and keep coolant level good, and these little engines will run a long time. Good solid lower end in them. Yes, there's been a few what threw a rod, but that is as rare as hen's teeth. -
Yeah, it's a 15.9 gallon tank in the EA82 bodied vehicles. Being yours is SPFI and Manual trans, you should be getting 32+ MPG. Anything under say 28 MPG is cause to start looking for the reason(s). There is a few things to throw gas mileage off, so one must do some investigating. Brakes dragging, wheel bearing(s) not quite right on fitment, exhaust restrictions, CTS (coolant temp sensor) faulty, cam timing, disty timing, tire pressure, front-end alignment, yada, yada, yada

Hood bowed from stiff hinges
TomRhere replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Straightened a few hoods by cutting a length of structural lumber to fit between the lip of where the fender bolts on under the hood. Place it forward of the bend and use your body weight to to push the bend out by hand. If the support section of the hood is kinked any, you will have to resort to rougher methods, then do as JesZek says with the reinforcement. -
Good to hear from you!!!

86 BRAT custom headlight integration
TomRhere replied to zmarrott's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/--Old%20Models--/ That link will get you to a downloadable FSM for the '83 Models. The Electrical Section is missing some pages, but the headlight wiring is there. -
I like to have a spare of each of the exterior light bulbs with me on an extended road trip. Especially the headlight-brake-taillight ones. Side marker-license plate ones are optional, but I've been pulled over because one of those were out, So...........

Looking for a manual for 1989 -1991 Xt6 Engines

Gates hose #18020 is a trim to fit replacement for both of the small coolant lines. Block to t-stat housing, and heater return pipe to throttle-body.

Upgrading 87 Brat Headlamps
TomRhere replied to aba4430's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found them on the "HELP" rack at the parts store. Actually had to stop at a few stores to get enough of them. Don't have the part number, but the ones with the 3/8" nut insert are the ones you want. -
Seems that way... Getting tired of all of it.

spfi / ea81 distributor drilling
TomRhere replied to superooo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fairly sure I kept the same orientation when I converted a carbed EA82 disty over to use in an EA81 engine.- 8 replies

Don't know why. Not in the mood to tear into it. I installed a resealed EA82 oil-pump. The ER27 oil-pump uses a different shaped Mickey Mouse seal, didn't have one of those. Oil pressure was near 50 on the gauge at start up, dropped as engine warmed up. #2 exhaust is making the most noise, with the rest of them on that side making some noise. The #1-#3 side is making noise also.

Seems the upper end on both sides aren't getting any oil. That's it,,,, I'm done................. Someone needs to show-up here with two car-haulers/pick-up trucks, maybe a 3rd truck. And take all of this away. More serious than a heart-attack on this. It will all go to the local scraper guy if no one shows here.

OK. Fast forward about 1 hour. Battery was getting low, so decided to hook up the charger for a bit and have a beer. AaaaaaaaaaaaaaHhhhhhhhhhhh! Got's no beer here........ Quick trip to store took care of that issue. Get back here, put beer in fridge, head out here to garage. Beer in hand of course. Turned the key and she fired right up. WTH?? Maybe she knew I didn't have a celebratory beer at hand. Don't know.. Let her run for awhile, checking coolant temp, and for any signs of leaks anywhere. All good. Sounded good, nice and smooth idle. Got the timing set proper. Let her run a bit more...... Holy Crap,,,, what is that noise from??????? Severe noise from disty-side valve cover. More than I remember TOD sounding like. Question is; Why? Investigation follows. After it cools down that is.

Yesterday, I got engine in and all hooked up minus radiator/hoses and Y-pipe. Got out here earlier this AM, and got all of that squared away. Been trying for the last hour or so to get it started. No joy there. Wants to, just won't fire off and run. Going over everything now. Got spark, T-Belt timing is good, disty timing appears to be good, have fuel to Throttle-body. So I'm currently "In Search Of" the issue. Reading prior posts in here to see if there's a related issue. Thinking there was at one point. More later......

Rebuilding ea81 - which bearings/rings to buy?
TomRhere replied to nickolai's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
EA81-EA82-ER27 share the same main/rod bearings. Same rods and piston rings also. -
Really hated to read about it being wrecked. But glad that you weren't hurt. Possible replacement for you, http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/159173-rolling-shell-82-brat/

Okay..... Fast-forward a couple months...................... Engine is totally re-assembled and ready to drop back down where it belongs. Should have it fired up late tomorrow.

MPFI and SPFI heads are different. So you would need to swap them between engines, use the SPFI cams though, as Turbo cams don't work so well without the Turbo.
-
Faces "out" as you're looking at the backside of the pump. Faces "in" would be towards the pump, away from you

never thought of it that way Jono.
