I found that to be iritating with the XT6 too.

Agreed.... FOD looks nothing like one would expect to find in an engine, not sure what it was originally. FOD wound up in nieghboring cylinder do to the broken valve being the "intake". FOD got tossed back into intake "after" the valve head broke off, then found it's way into the adjoining cylinder on "it's" next intake stroke. Piece of FOD is seemingly straight piece of metal, maybe squarish of cross-section. Not real sure of origin..... Definetly didn't need to be there... For those who don't know; FOD is Foriegn Object Debris. Leads to Foriegn Object Damage = catastrophic engine failure. As evident by pics... Think of that plane that recently "landed" in the Hudson. Birds are definetly FOD. They do not belong in an engine, there for,,, they are FOD. If it ain't fuel or air,,,, it don't belong in an engines combustion cylinder/chamber.

BRAT is down, Fixed it.......
TomRhere replied to TomRhere's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just got in from wrenching on it. Found a stone hit was cause of leak, smashed one tube and broke a hole in one other. Easy fix there... Slapped a 2-core EA-82 radiator in it for now. Bailing wire is your friend. Was going to use the new one I have, but it has plastic tanks, so that meant more wiring to be done for cooling fan thermoswitch. To cold out to be messing with that stuff, a whopping *12F. Spent about 2 hours on the Wife's '93 Sunbird trying to find what it's idle issue is, before wrenching on the BRAT. My feet are ice cubes now. I'm done for the day...... It's Miller Time!!!!! -
My new 1986 XT won't start, help?
TomRhere replied to derburger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Can't help much with the "no-start" issue, haven't owned a running EA-82 vehicle, so I'm not real familuar with them. The pic of the belt,,,, belt looks to be new. Here's a link to a good "how-to" on the timing belts, http://www.economysuperstar.com/milesfox/subaru/service/timingbelt.htm -
BRAT is down, Fixed it.......

No, it didn't get "hot", but it was climbing up that way before reaching the gas station, got over the 3/4 area of the gauge. The heater going from blowing heat to blowing cold air is what got my attention. It was 1* out that morning. Brrr... Don't have another radiator for the EA-81, but I do have a couple EA-82 ones here. I can "fit" one of those in until I can get this one repaired, or order in another. Hoping the snow stays away until I get it fixed as we're relying on Rich's '91 GMC Sonoma ST to get to/from work right now. 4.3 Auto, LSD. Thing will step sideways shifting into 2nd at idle speed, on dry pavement. Makes for fun driving on slippery roads. The ST on the sides has to stand for "Spins Tires". -
Seems the 6 year old radiator decided to blow a tube yesterday on the way to work. Luckily, we were close to a gas station, and only 20 minutes from work. Put some pre-mix in, made it to work. Checked it out at break, and it's got a small stream coming from near the tank about half way up. Topped it off after work, made it the 32 miles home. She's parked for a few days now....

'86 gl wagon owner seeking help from the gods!
TomRhere replied to baggyshorts's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Pulling the center of the grille and the radiator, gives you better visual of what you're doing. Not nessecary to do so, and an A/Ced vehicle kinda prohibits doing so. -

Glad to hear it's working now. -
Welcome to the Board.... You may have to expand your search area for a BRAT. I've owned 5, currently have 3, and only 1 was bought local to me. Others came from Northern Lower Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin. They are out there...

I'd get it, if for no other reasons than to save it, do a fix&sell.

hmmmm still running like poo
TomRhere replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Been long time since I've messed with points...... Check the coil wires for proper connection.. Kinda 'member a few vehicles that had running issues, and someone had replaced coil. Had + - backwards on the coil. Does make a difference....... -
Yeah Jim, it's the resistor block that's usually the issue. The coils of the resistor break from age/heat. Only option is to replace the unit.

FOUND! stolen subaru wagon, spokane (not mine!)
TomRhere replied to baccaruda's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
In Michigan, if it don't "resemble" a vehicle, you don't need Title to scrap it. So split it down the middle, cut it in half sideways, and you can haul it over the scales, no questions asked. Sorta glad I own BRAT's in a way. Most every police officer in a 50 mile radius knows who owns them......... Wife drove the '86 a couple weeks ago, got pulled over cause the sherriff knew there was something wrong with the picture he was seeing. IE; wrong person behind the wheel.... Boy, was she POed. But again, she was happy that they were that observant..... -
An Anti-freeze leak, spraying on the belt(s) or pulleys will let the belt(s) slip. It is a lubricant of sorts... Pure Anti-Freeze is some slippery stuff.. As said, check all hoses for signs of leakage, 'specially those small hoses around/under the intake manifold. If it does turn out to be the heater supply (off waterpump to metal tube) hose under the altenator, a Gates 28466 hose is what you want to get, trim to fit.... You may want to source yourself another altenator for a spare, just to be on the safe side. Anti-Freeze sprayed into an alt will shorten the life of them. May take some time to go bad, may not. Anti-Freeze plays havock with the lubrication of bearing, no matter what part of an engine those bearings are in..

Check the pitchstopper rod. Had bushing fail on one of mine, made a clunk when letting off gas. -

Man,,, that just totally sucks...... I may have a bumper, I'll have to dig it out and see exactly what condition it's in. I pulled the lights out of it, (some time ago), so you'd have to use yours. Came off an '86 BRAT. Just what part of the Great White North are you in? -
Check your heater hoses over carefully. Few years back, I bought an '84 BRAT. Was told it had a bad HG as to cause of leak. Found pin-hole in heater hose that sprayed toward the head area and ran down off engine. Easy fix...
