This is something that might be worth talking to ccr about. I know that depending on what phase the motor is, and whether it is California emissions or not, changes the crank/cam pulley because they have a different set of "timing" teeth on them for the sensors. I don't know if the ACTUAL crank and cams are different or compatabile. I would say if everything lines up (coolant passages, oil passages, bolt holes, gaskets, etc) then go ahead and put it together with the crank and cam gears, timing belt, etc. that belong to the computer and sensors that are going with it. And then let us know how it turns out! Edit: Just so we are clear here, you are talking about using an '05 SHORT BLOCK (no heads, cams, timings, or anything) and then putting all of the 98 heads and cams and accessories on it, right?

Bizarre XT6 power steering issues
SuBrat84 replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is it one of the links in the main f-link box near the battery or does it have a seperate one? Color? Could you show us a pic? Thx for the advice, who's connie? -
That doesn't matter. the 8 bolt pattern will bolt on the 4 bolt tranny still.. but it's the heads thing that worries me. Isn't the 05 SOHC and the 98 DOHC? That would totally ruin the computer controlled timing.. and you would have a hard time having the correct crank/cam sprockets, etc.

Bizarre XT6 power steering issues
SuBrat84 replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Definately keep this thread up to date please. I am close to getting the XT6 on the road and registered.. one of the issues is the power steering is out.. light comes on right away etc etc.. i was going to dig into that last... i hope i get more info out of you! -
Transmission, yes. I don't think you can put the 98 heads on the 05 block though. You would probably need a complete longblock and computer/wiring to have an 05 motor in there. Something about crank and cams being different. I am interested to know if you do try how it runs. Thanks.

Mudrat Designs???

I Don't think everything has worked out for everyone. I am not 100% but keep fairly up to date on it. I would highly suggest NOT paying for anything upfront. Exchange money for parts in person. Or get parts up front. That man needs to earn his reputation back. -

Not going to make it. Couldn't get my axles fabbed and the Jeep is having overheating problems on the freeway. If it wasn't a couple of hundred miles I would take the jeep... but ... oh well. Being broke down on I-10 last weekend SUCKED. Not looking for a repeat. *Bummed* -
1:40 into that video there is a guy crashing on the same corner that the first vid ends with. It's a different crash.. the other guy = dead.

Still have not found anyone to do my axles yet. I really doubt the brat will be ready in a week. I still want to take the Jeep. Hope the wifey is okay with going since I have to go to phx this weekend with her. -
I like trying to see what parts fall off the cars.. and I'm sorry.. but the last clip.. those guys so totally must have died.. why else would they cut it short like that?

So, long story short here we are with Courtneys SECOND motor swap. Everything went more or less flawless. Started it up and with-in 30 seconds it threw P1507 Idle Control System Malfunction (Fail Safe) I don't even know what that means. Everything worked fine before (Except the ticking.) Right before she brought me the car she sprayed the engine bay out and it threw a knock sensor code.. but that went away once the car was dry. So then I swapped the motor.. and now here I am. I am going to call CCR tomarrow and see what they think. (If I don't get any good ideas here first.) I'm going to cry. I'm starting to feel like a failure or something.. even though the first motor wasnt my fault.

Was the noise there when you were stopped? Could have been a bit of grit, etc in your brakes? -
Quicky about ea81 --> ea82t axle mating.
SuBrat84 replied to SuBrat84's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
They make a big difference if I can't attach them to ea82t DOJs. Stop confusing me! -
They are tough. I have put them through trees(4ft springy mesquite trees) and off ~3ft cliffs (98 legacy) with no major damage (cracked a headlight) and no discomfort to the passenger or myself. A guy made an oncomming left in front of me. He was in a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I was in a 1982 GL Wagon. I hit him in the passenger door at ~35mph, with enough force that my car bounced and was facing the opposite direction I was travelling. His car was Taco shaped and ~50ft away. The glass in his car shattered so badly there was glass removed from my left ear canal. None of the glass in my Subaru was broken. The seatbelt stretched, allowing my head to hit the dash/steering wheel and cause minor frontal lobe damage. It took me about two weeks to stop stuttering. No memory loss or anything though. I'm not sure what I cut my knee on.. but that's because I took the dash trim out. The spare tires I had in the back crushed the backseat-back flat. That would have caused some serious back problems to any passengers, I luckily had none. I basically walked away from that accident. They did take me to the hospital via ambulance, but I was only there for ~15 minutes. I only did that because I had full coverage with progressive. All of the Subarus I see wrecked in the junkyards the cabin is always intact.. even the roll-over ones. I have seen 'not good' ones where people went through the windshield, etc. But not wearing your belt is your own fault. I have seen, in person, much less pleasant things from other types of vehicles. I've rarely ever seen a badly burned Subaru. My favorite thing about the Subaru: In a front end collision the drivetrain is forced UNDER the car instead of INTO the car. Thanks. -Eli-

No, it made sense to me.. it's just then 5 minutes later Mike came along and more or less contradicted you? Time to find 4wd shafts! Thanks. -
Be my own cherry picker: Really possible?
SuBrat84 replied to DerFahrer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I've pulled the solid lifter pushrod out of a couple old subarus. It's not easy and the thing is heavy. Upwards of 200 or 250 pounds I believe. I definately would not try putting it back in with out some kind of hoist or lift or something. Cheap engine extraction = a minimum 5ft long 4"x4" and some 1" or larger straps and a buddy. Edit: if you unbolt the engine crossmember and steering components (steering rack goes with engine crossmember) it is pretty easy to drop it out the bottom.. then the only hang up is getting your car high enough in the air to get the motor to slide out. -

SuBrat84 replied to SuBrat84's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I'm sorry, what are you talking about? Is there something different in the actual shaft part and the way it hooks up to the DOJ? The brat is 4wd, the rear ea81 axles fit on the ea82t lsd and into the ea82t rear disc hubs just fine. The ea82t axles fit in there but it throws it off too much and would cause rubbing / camber / alignment / issues! It has to be the ea81 length shaft with the ea82t DOJs. It's the only thing I have left to do besides the driveshaft, and I have that handled already. So, you're saying the FWD SHAFT PART is 2mm smaller in diameter AS WELL AS the DOJ part? But that it will work fine as long as on both sides the shafts are the same diameter? FWD ea81 shafts should but able to go in ea82t DOJs right? Otherwise I am going to be hitting the JY's to try and find some 4wd shafts. -
I put the 5spd pt dr from the ea82t in the brat.. putting the 25 splines on the ea81 half shafts. What I want to know since I don't have any extra 4wd ea81 shafts to put the DOJs on.. can I use FWD ea81 shafts? Is the shaft length the same from FWD and 4WD ea81's? It's just the cup diameter that was different, right? Which wouldn't matter since I am putting the 25 DOJs on the ea81 shaft. I hope I am right.. I want to have these axles fab'd this week if I can!!
