  1. I think the whole car was kind of rebuilt.. jy writing on drive shafts etc... but it ran for a long time then just one day BLAMO is leaking tranny fluid like an ounce a second or something insanely fast... as far as I could tell it was leaking out of the torque converter area... I have the trans out right now but I don't know what I would be looking for?? Anyway.. I can get the trans out of the 96 for $100..
  2. What would be involved in fixing that? I've never tore into a tranny yet.. especially an auto.. and the shops around here are quoting us retarded prices to even open it up... what about availability of the seals and stuff I would need? Edit: I dont know if it changes your opinion about that seal that it happened abruptly and is DUMPING tranny fluid when the car is running.. but if its not a hard thing to take apart and replace.. maybe that would be the best route?
  3. I only found one tranny for auction on ebay and it DID indeed say "90-96" ... the tranny up for auction was a JDM one though. Can anyone else give me a confirm so I can get this j/y tranny before anyone else does??
  4. Oh yeah.. I will definately check the gear ratio's... I can get this tranny for such a good deal that I could get the rear diff, drive lines, and axles, if need be, and it would still be cheap as a (insert something cheap here).
  5. Just like the title says... sorry to start a new thread about this, but I think the other thread wasn't getting very much attention and I need a quick answer on this one. Starkapopolis' tranny "Gave up" (basically is dumping a LOT of tranny fluid from what appeared to be the torque converter area when the car was running.) As far as we could tell it is something internal of the tranny causing the leak. At this point the most cost effective fix would be for me to go pull another Auto from the Junkyard.. but the "preferred" yard only has a 96 with an EJ22 and Auto tranny. The car it is going into is a '91 Legacy LS with an EJ22... It seems to me like the swap should be plug and play... I was just wondering if there is any differences that should cause me NOT to go this route? Thank You!!!
  6. Okay, so I went to the junkyard and there is a '96 EJ22 w/ a 4 speed auto in it. I was hoping I could get someone to confirm or deny the compatability with the 96 tranny bolting up to the 91 ej22? Plug and Play? I hope so because I can get the tranny for $100 ... I need to check the rear diff to see if it is different... but I'm sure I could get the rear diff for fairly cheap.
  7. '91 Legacy LS http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48748&highlight=tucson I pulled his tranny today... and as far as I can tell it is leaking from the input shaft area? The part that plugs into the torque converter? He should be getting pics soon. Anyway.. we're exploring options what we can do for him. Option #1 is seeing how much a local shop would charge to rebuild the auto. Option #2 would be sourcing out a used auto tranny from a local junkyard, or board member. Or that one in CO for ~$400. Option #3 (everyone's favorite) if it is at all cost effective would be sourcing out everything we need for the 5spd swap. I've done the swap on an 88 ea82 and it doesn't look like it would be too much harder to do on the ej22.. one thing I would like cleared up about the ej is if we would have to get the manual computer (it is air suspension if that makes a difference.) Thoughts? Opionions? Anyone have what we need? Thanks!
  8. Ahh the 98 GT is nice... *memories* ... I would highly recommend that all four of your tires be the same tread depth. All four tires MUST be the same size to prevent differential and transmission binding. As far as the tire size you can play with it a little bit.. if you want something a little wider for performance on the street... or something a little taller for going in the dirt? Something taller will throw off your speedo a little though. One option I have heard mentioned is getting one tire and having it shaved down to match the other tires... but hey.. may as well replace all four to keep your AWD functioning well.
  9. It turns out that the EA81 in this FWD 81 GL has a hole in it that I could almost put my hand in. It's pretty trashed and actually "very" rusty for being in AZ. Must be that cold mountain air or something.. There is probably a few usable parts and the 5 speed FWD tranny looked to be in good shape still. The "spare" motor is a fairly rusty looking EA71 that would probably have to be rebuilt to be usable. Sorry I couldn't take this stuff off your hands Bill...
  10. Hey Brian - Sorry I didn't get on here a lot sooner. Busy busy you know.. I was wondering if you've come to a conclusion what you are planning to do with that. Or if you've done something already? Do you want me to see what kind of transmission I can source around town for you? I know the EJ series stuff is a little newer but I did an auto-manual swap on an ea82 for ~$500.. You just have to know how to talk to those Junkyard guys.. Also.. if we could figure out a way to get your car onto my concrete over here I could get in there and see exactly why it's leaking. Let me know! -Eli-
  11. I dont know if I'm too late on this but if you need a place to wrench or rest in Tucson you can hit me up @ Five Two 0 , Four Nine 0, 0 69 Four. Looks like I may be going to Mt Lemmon this beautiful Thursday afternoon so I may not get reception. -Eli-
  12. Are you referring to the clutch disc itself? I can't remember if A. It doesn't matter. or B. It will only go on one way.
  13. My sentiments exactly... how much $donations$ do we need to provide to prevent this from happening in the future??
  14. This does sound possible. But keep in mind this coolant issue started AFTER your 75k service. So if any serious damage results (I.E. A Blown Head Gasket) the dealer should be held responsible for not properly servicing your vehicle. You should wait until the car is cold and check for bubbles AGAIN. It is POSSIBLE the bubbles were from the cooling system not being bled properly... but why wasn't it bled properly with a 75k service from a dealership??? If you are still getting bubbles in your cold radiator I suggest returning your vehicle to the dealership and having them replace the head gaskets and any other items that may have potentially been damaged as a results of the overheating caused by the air pocket they left in your motor. They should do all of this for FREE. If there is any issues about this coolant / hg situation and the dealership refuses to make it right, let them know you will be contacting Subaru directly to inform them of the situation. Then contact Subaru (of America, I assume) and fill them in on the situation and the dealer name/location. If nothing is made right after contacting Subaru directly you should probably begin taking legal action. Get all of the paper work POSSIBLE from the Dealership about the 75k service and anything they did AFTER the 75k service. Get these papers BEFORE you persue legal action. Good luck, I hope it was as simple as bleeding out the coolant properly and you're having a good time driving around with a smile on your face!
  15. This is also good mouse protection..... unless you don't like snakes!
  16. lol... that sucks... I've never had a mouse in one of my vehicles. They can be very hazardous to your vehichle by doing things such as chewing through important wires that are very inaccesable. I would suggest getting some D-Con or something of the sort immediately... or keep some cats in your garage/yard. Good luck getting that little gremlin!!!
  17. You should see some of the Gen 1's out here!!
  18. Would both cars make it? Would you consider having someone drive one of them? or is it completely unreliable to make the journey and you dont want to risk damaging it further? I don't recommend towing ANYTHING over the grapevine into L.A. unless you have a SERIOUS tow rig. And coming around the east side of the G.C. can be just as serious. Any way you look at coming down here you are going to end up crossing some serious mountains... Well.. I can't say that about the 1/101 along the coast as I have not been on it north of L.A. or South of Newport, OR. The coast highway is a LONG drive I hear though. Keep us all posted man.. most importantly BE SAFE. BTW, when is your ETA into Tucson?
  19. I would definately start with plugs and wires... NGK plugs for sure and maybe a nice set of 8mm wires if you can find them. (Had a 98 GT NA that did what sounds like you are describing and plugs and wires fixed it right up.)
  20. I may be going to get this car tomarrow if I can drum up the gas money to get down there... I will keep you all posted of the condition and all that ... if both the motors are good one of them will be going in our brat... but then we would have 3 laying around doing nothing... how much of the motor do you need for your core shawn?? I have an ea81 block sitting outside right now I probably am not going to use....
  21. In the pictures you sent me including one of the engine stamp it looks very much like an EA81. I was just wondering if maybe the 71 was a typo?
  22. This is it: Definately needs some work.. or maybe a good parts car. I'm going to TRY to go look at it tomarrow if things go well.
  23. I can't get the full report but this is what Carfax says about it: VIN:JF1AM43B2BB445222 Year/Make/Model:1981 SUBARU GL Body Style:STATION WAGON Engine Type: 1.8L L4 2BBL Manufactured In: JAPAN Search Results: 3 records found in our database
  24. Hey!!! WOW! I used to live in Arivaca. EA71 is a 1.6l. What do you plan to do with it? If you need ANY help at all with it please CALL ME @ 520 891 6828!!! My name is Eli!
  25. It's called Jasco. You should be able to get it at any major paint supply store (Dunn Edwards, Etc) It's a prep and prime and it's about $20 a gallon. The navy uses it on their ships prior to painting them to prevent rust. The stuff is awesome. It DESTROYS rust. It wont prevent it from coming back though unless you get your surface super clean... prep and prime it.. then paint or rubberize it. DO NOT LET THIS STUFF TOUCH YOUR SKIN OR GET IN YOUR EYES. Rubber gloves and GOOD eye protection are VERY needed when handling this stuff. If this isn't an option.. wash your wheel wells out on a regular basis at a coin wash or if you have a good hose with a lot of pressure at home. Edit: This stuff is harmful to your paint-job. Use carefully.
