Update: Spotted: XT6 AWD ... Q's
SuBrat84 replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
They are asking $500 because they are a salvage yard. They probably think they could sell the motor for 300-400 etc etc.. I was at one yard here that wanted $600 for an ej22.. so.. if it's in decent condition.... hmmmm -
Okay here's my story. I have a 98 Legacy 2.5 4AT.. Now, I've been told that the AT's have an 80 (front) / 20 (rear) power transfer in 3rd and 4th gear. <--- Dont know if this is true or not. Anyway.. I DO know that not down shifting to keep your rpm's up makes it a lot easier to slide on dirt and snow. So I was going up to the mountain in the snow (which doesn't happen around Tucson very often..) But it was actively snowing... enough that they had a sheriff checking people for chains/4wd .. We had our 4 year old nephew with us.. so I wasn't "Seeing" what my car could do in the snow.. Just leisurly driving about 25-30 mph.. We crested a small hill with a slight turn to the right.. and as soon as we were aimed down hill the car just started sliding... at 25 you have a lot of time to call yourself an idiot as you're slowly sliding towards that guard rail. It did do a good amount of damage... busted a head light.. the grill.. cracked the bumper.. pushed the radiator back.. bent the hood up.. etc... I would believe that if I had put it onto a boulder that the damage would have been about what that outback looked like.. tell your boy to learn to downshift the automatic to keep the rpms up in the snow.

Was at the Junkyard today getting an electric condensor fan motor for the 91 Accord. First time at this U-Pull yard... (They told me on the phone they didn't have Subies...) and OH WHAT A SELECTION! They have a Gen 1 brat with a high roll bar and jump seats still in it! (Would this fit in our Gen 2 Brat??) (Update: YellowSub got the gen 1 brat.) Anyway! I spotted a gorgeous looking XT-6 All Time AWD '88 or '89 .. It's in their "Incoming" yard.. So I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.. Going to go look at it tomarrow. I asked how much they wanted for it and they said $500 but they don't know the condition it's in. I'm going to go inspect it after work tomarrow. I definately want an XT in our "fleet" ... I was hoping everyone could throw in some input about things I should look for being wrong / broken / good / bad / etc. Also, how hard are these to work on ?? They said they have the title .. but I don't know if it's a salvage title or whatever... what's the most I should pay before just walking away? Thanks!

I Would not hesitate to do this if I had the extra money. I have access to a mig and oxycetalene torch.. The fiberglass stuff I don't mess with though. I would make mine a "brat" go cart!

Wrong Disty or Idiot at the Parts store?
SuBrat84 replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The caps weren't really different height. Just the rotor. Like Dragonwing said.. they have two different Disty's: Nippendenso and Hitachi. He gave me the cap/rotor for a Nippen and I have a Hitachi set-up. Problem fixed. New cap and rotor on the brat. Still getting Tach jump... *sigh* Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a new Disty before too long. Should be good to get through emission now I think. It's firing a lot smoother. Gonna check the timing one more time and head down to the station tomarrow. So here's my "tip of the day" - If you go to a parts store to buy a cap/rotor for your distributor.. make sure you know if you got a Hitachi or a Nippendenso. And make sure to tell the guy "I need a cap and rotor for a <year, make, model> and it's the <insert disty style here> model." -
I'd like to build a little dirt go cart out of one of those !

So I just bought a disty cap and rotor for the 84 brat. Walked into the shop.. "I need a distributor cap and rotor for an 84 Subaru GL" Got home... the cap doesn't fit on the distributor and the rotor is WAY Too tall. Gonna take them back.. but now I cant go to emission today. *Peeved* Cap: Ref no: 4818 Serial: 41266 00347 Rotor: Ref no: 3790 Serial: 41266 01589 Any thoughts?

Update: The front springs don't fit. And I'm not going to try the back springs because of this. They might fit with the proper "hat" on them. It seems to me like they are too short though... but maybe the proper hat would take care of that.. no $$ to look into it right now though. and boy was it a P.I.T.A. to get that old spring back on. If anyone knows if the springs would fit with the proper hat please let me know? I would love to have these springs on my legacy.. but I dont want to break anything in the process. Stock springs are too mushy with the sway and strut on the back. -Eli-

My Loyale's stereo was stolen
SuBrat84 replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Do you guys get those kids that walk around checking door handles to see which cars are unlocked to steal change/loose stuff? I always lock all my rides I've only ever been broken into once and it was slim jimmed. No damage. Just the loss of my stereo and cds. -
If you are worried about it damaging your differentials you could always take out a half axle from the front and one from the back. If you're only going 20 or 30 miles it shouldn't be a problem at all. Just my opinion though.
-
I flat-towed an 84 Brat from San Diego, CA to Tucson, AZ without any problem.. the truck we towed with didn't have a low enough drop hitch.. so turning sharply was kinda P.I.T.A.
-
I personnaly wouldn't recommend using Synthetic.. but it wont present any problems. Just don't mix it with any other types/brands/non-synthetics/additives. EVER. I would however recommend using 10w30 for your engine oil. And maybe switching to 5w30 at your pre-winter oil change. Depending on how cold it gets there. I find that my 98 2.5 Legacy GT runs a lot better on 10w30.. (But I live in Tucson.) No advice about tranny filter. Hope you enjoy your OBW. Good luck!

*Bump* Or a link maybe? Thanks.

1) I'm 22 and my 2.5 Legacy gets me in MORE than enough trouble. I'm sure if I had a WRX I couldn't imagine the trouble. 2) The Impreza is safe enough that the side impact air bags aren't going to make a huge difference in a side impact crash. It is my opinion as a 22 year old... The 2.5 is more than enough car. As much as I would LOVE to have a WRX or especially an STI .. that's asking for more trouble than a 22yr old needs. If you want to spend the 4k on suspension and brake upgrades.. that would be a wise investment to improve the safety of the vehicle. -Eli-

My Loyale's stereo was stolen
SuBrat84 replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Same thing happened to me in hawaii once... they broke in took the deck and all the cds. Left $75 cash in the glove box.. digital camera's laying around, in line skates in the back... all kinds of loot. These guys are "pros" .. they slim jim your car, take your deck, and book it. 3 minute operation. Sorry to hear your loss. -
I'm sure there is other people out here who do this as well.. but this is what I found just in the last 10 minutes... http://www.modifiedgraphics.com/send_your_design.html

There's someone that knows what they're talkin about! (I never made stickers before) I just want that skull on my Brat! (With the word "Lurch" underneath it in Comic Sans MS format.)
-
I'm not sure.. I would imagine you could send the design into a sticker making company.. but you might want to copyright it first so they don't make a mint off your guys' artwork without you getting n e thing for it. I'll do a little research for you.

And I'm damn sick of pulling up next these people in my 98 GT (or even the BRAT).. giving them a respective nod or wave and getting looked at like I'm some kind of chump. Like they are better than me because they have a WRX and I'm just in a Legacy (or Brat) Or even better.. the people driving around in WRX's that THINK my 98 Legacy is a WRX (I debadged it) just because it has a HOOD SCOOP. And then they try to race me. *GRRR* (Ranting)
