Hello and an Emissions Issue!
SuBrat84 replied to kenf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my uncle says put four cap fulls of rubbing alcohol to 1/2 tank of gas = pass emissions I haven't tested this theory though.. so i dunno. -
`Anyone got pics of what I need to be looking at? I got my niece (2) and nephew (4) over here right now so I cant go out and look under the hood.

So Ryker just informed me of the hill holder and linked me to a thread of how it should work... and Apparently if the 84 Brat has one.. it's not functioning.. I sure would like to be able to use this feature.. If anyone could tell me how it might have been disabled.. or how i can enable it? Or if my brat just doesn't have it? This sure is a feature I would like to be able to use! Thanks. -Eli- (http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35710)

Sorry Gnuman but all the subaru's driving around with hood scoops dont have turbo's. I have a 98 Legacy 2.5 GT w/ a hood scoop and no turbo.. the scoop is "functional" as far as letting free air into the engine bay to help keep things "cool" i guess. I don't know when they started putting the scoops on the non-turbo'd soobies.. but they do it.

Here's what my owners manual from a 98 says: "The total trailer weight (trailer weight plus its cargo weight) with brakes must never exceed 2,000 lbs. (907kg)" The Gross Vehicle Weight (i.e. the combined weight of vehicle, driver, passengers, luggage, trailer hitch, trailer tongue load and any other optional equipment installed on your vehicle) must never exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). GVWR is shown on the certification label located on the drivers door of your vehicle. blah blah blah.. The maximum trailer tongue load must never exceed 165 lbs (75 kg) etc etc etc.. subaru does not assume any liability to you being a ********************* and hurting yourself, other people, or your vehicle. good luck.

New line of Subaru GL Cookies!
SuBrat84 replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I wish i could remember what happened last time I ate "green" cookies... or were those brownies? -
Just thought everyone would get a kick out of our cookies. Jessica made the wagon for me.. and I made the Brat for her... almost too good to eat, huh? -Eli-

The only place I could find in Tucson that stocks those gaskets is Midas. Good luck!
-
yeah if its that donut gasket you're talking about dont use any sealer.
-
I'm not sure which part of the pipe you need the gaskets for? As for the sealer you want to get "Ultra Copper" sensor safe high temp RTV Silicone Gasket Maker. I got mine from autozone.. 6 bux for a 3 ounce tube

Suggestions on redoing exhaust headers
SuBrat84 replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you're set on using your exsisting y-pipe here's what you need to do to get it to stop leaking.. You're going to have to carefully cut off the stupid little heat port that goes to the air box.. There is a seam below all that extra metal that likes to rust out... you might need to find a spare piece of steel to cover the hole if it's very big.. you're going to have a near impossible time welding that up with an auto feed style welder.. so what you're going to need is a welding torch that you can use some scrap steel to "Braze" it onto the pipe... this may require some grinding / more brazing / grinding / to find and cover all the holes.. you can weld the heat port back on if you feel you live in a cold enough climate that it helps warm up your car.. but it's not needed. As for sealing the parts that bolt together get new gaskets and "Ultra Copper" sensor safe high temp rtv silicone gasket maker from autozone etc. I think it's around $6 a tube. Well worth it in my opinion. Use it to coat both sides of the gasket and stick that puppy on there! Both sides of every gasket on your exhaust line. They wont leak at the seals anymore. DO NOT use this stuff on your valve cover or head gaskets!!! It's strictly, in my opinion, for helping seal exhaust gaskets! Good luck! -
UPDATE: Emissions Problems in the BRAT! Oh no!
SuBrat84 replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Took the quarter out.. sounds a lot better timed closer to 8 degrees BTDC.. need a better timing light. *Bump* -
The Impreza and Legacy do use the same motors.. whether it's an EJ22 or an EJ25 is determined by your engine displacement... it's also stamped on your motor somewhere.. i think above your #3 cylinder? .. if it's an Impreza something "2.5" then yes you have the EJ25.. there is no different designation between phase 1 and phase 2 except what year it is.. (edit) the "L" models are usually EJ22

10x1.25 metric on the ea81.. length varies if you have an ASV or not.. good luck.
-
The 84 Brat has 2 ASV's.. one on each side.. the drivers side was making a loud noise that I initially thought was bad piston rings until I found the ASV and "plugged" it with my thumb. It turns out that it was actually my timing off about 6 degress.. give or take.. Getting my timing closer to 8 degrees BTDC made a lot of the noise go away. Apparently the timing was causing a misfire on the 2 or 4 cylinder thus the noise coming from the ASV sucking too much air. I need a better timing light though so i can get through emissions.

ALL THIS EDITTING, i'm getting grumpy. There should be a chat option *sigh*. Eli explained what the Flywheel does and everything, he just left out the part about the rubber....since they're, uh, not necessary in all situations:grin: ~*~jess AND Eli~*~

You guys are mean, and i was talking about the rubber part...hmpf. (edit)Didn't see Ratty's yet, thanx, glad to see SOMEONE here is helpful to a girl.
