  1. We just got this brat and finally got it "driveable" this weekend. The electric fan isn't coming on when the engine starts to heat up..(it does work, but I don't really want to "Hot" wire it.) It does stay cool while driving.. We've put a new radiator & hoses.. valve cover gaskets.. spark plugs and wires.. air filter.. oil filter.. oil pan gasket & drain bolt.. pcv filter (going to replace pcv valce as soon as i can get that damned old one out.. still needs: A rad overflow reservoir that is made for it.. an o2 sensor for the catalytic.. front right running light (underneath head light, not the bulb.. the whole thing) and some cosmetics... and probably some other things we don't know about. Anyway.. it sounds like it's running rougher than it should.. and seem to be getting some.. dunno.. "rougher" noises when giving it gas (up around 3-4k rpms...) Maybe timing? We don't have a timing gun. Any tips? Thanks. Oh yeah.. the tach is a little "jumpy" without any noticable changes in engine idle.. maybe a 200rpm jump.. but the engine doesnt notice it...

    offroad trip

Very tame. Nice lookin country side.. where is that? I hope you had a nice pick-nic basket packed.. Jessica says it helped her take a nap. Very peaceful.
  3. That "Spring thingy" that came out on your screw was the inner thread of what ever you were trying to screw into.. you stripped it.. probably need a tap .. unless it's something you use a machine screw for.. then u just need a bigger machine screw.. As far as the hesitation goes.. have you tried replacing your spark plug wires? My #3 wire was bad and it was causing me a ton of hesitation and CEL was on. New wires helped a lot. Good luck..
  4. If your oil is super clean it might just be real hard to see on the dip... 5w30 is also very thin for these engines. I use 10w30 in my 98 2.5 GT .. Haven't had this problem though.
  5. I just had a few questions to see what kind of feedback I'd get about this... 1. I get some pretty decent shakes from my Anti-locks about 50% of the time in hard braking... Warped rotors maybe? (Any suggestions about good quality rotors to put in there?) 2. Kinda shakey around 68-76 mph... Probably just uneven tire wear? 3. Passenger side door lock motor "BUZZ"es like hell when i use the automatic unlock... Locks without any abnormal noise... unlocks just fine but makes that buzz noise... Do I need a new lock motor? How hard is it to replace? Cost? 4. Any good idea's where I can get a new hood / front bumper cover / grille? 5. And the last one, This has really been getting to me the last week or two... When I turn real hard and accelerate it feels like it's trying to "Bind up" or something? Could this possibly be something simple like changing out the differential fluids and tranny fluid... or is this an indicator of something a lot worse? Any input on these would be appreciated. Thanks!
  6. Yeah, I got to watch them unpackage my block.. so I know that was brand new.. but you're right.. who knows what other crap they used off mine and probably other peoples engines... I'm going to get in there this week and see if they have it on file still....
  7. It likes to get up over a hundred here in Tucson in the dead of summer.. Probably high 90's in the trails though..
  8. I've had this happen a few times in my 98 Legacy 2.5 GT ... 1st time it was fouled plugs... then two or three months later it was bad wires. Every research I could find about it indicated flashing CEL is an emission problem... (Plugs, Wires, O2 Sensor, Etc.) It could also be caused by a loose gas cap!!! Best of luck... let us know what it is when you get it resolved... I hope it's not that gasket!!!
  9. LOL! Those minute men are chumps! Besides.. they are all in Cochise county... I go wheelin in Pima and Santa Cruz
  10. Cool. I know of some good trails around here... but dont have gps :-p There is some nice stuff of varying difficulty up Reddington Pass to the North East of Tucson... And I know where there is a LOT of different kind of stuff down south of here near Mexico around a little town called Arivaca where I grew up... We have a Yamaha Blaster ATV too (As soon as we get that piston for it anyway)... Maybe we'll be able to set somethin up this summer.....
  11. Roo - That's cool. We just got this 84 Brat. It's all stock right now.. But we'll be fixin it up over time. It's our offroader. Hopefully we'll have finished patching the exhaust by this weekend so we can get it through emission and licensed. We can't wait to get back out in the desert to do some good off roadin'... the legacy just doesn't cut it in these rocks Anyway.. let me know if there's any good off roadin on the weekends around these parts.. You can only have so much fun when you're only 1 subie out there. -Eli and Jessica- P.S. We have 5 spare tires incase of flats while rompin.
  12. I didn't sign an as-is.. but it wasnt under warranty. Subaru is just cool to give me a new block.. Plus we have a "Lemon" law in Arizona about that kind of thing. I can't even imagine why it threw a rod except maybe it had been sitting on their lot too long? (It's a 4spd Auto ) I've had it up to 135 since.. give or take a few mph because the speed-o only shows 120.
  13. Well, they used the same heads... I can't imagine they used the old gaskets. They told me they replaced "Everything that needed to be replaced" They didn't give me a work order though.
  14. So I found this car in the newspaper in Tucson, Arizona in late winter of '04. It was at Emich Olds/Subaru dealership. I may have over paid a little bit at 12k... but hey, it only had 48k miles on it!!! Aparently the guy who had it in Alaska didn't drive it that much... So I took delivery of my new baby roo and had to take it out to see what she could do. Not 25 miles from the dealership I'm goin down the freeway at about 105 when i have a sudden loss of power.. having no idea what was going on I decide to turn around and try and make it back to the dealer. Not even 3 miles from my "loss of power" I get this *pop* and steam just starts pouring out the hood scoop and any other way out of the engine bay it can. Apparently what happened is the piston threw itself out the block and blew the water pump!!! I saw the HOLE in the block.. you could almost fit your whole hand in there. Needless to say Subaru sent me a brand new 2.5 short block and the dealership took their sweet 2 weeks to replace the motor and whatever else needed to be replaced.. all free of charge. She's been running like a champ ever since though and it's cool that I got a brand new block!! I get nothing but hassles from the dealer every time I need parts though.. I've stopped buying stuff from them, and just order from online parts suppliers now. Anyway, to make a long story, well.. long... I love my subaru's
  15. Hello!! Our names are Eli and Jessica. We are an engaged couple living in Tucson, Arizona! We just bought an 84 Subaru Brat!!! We just wanted to say high to everyone on the board here. Also, to see if there is any other Subaru 4wd people here in Toostoned Arizona??? The brat came with a Gen 1 Top that we want to sell.. or if worse comes to worse donate to a good home... We also own a 98 Legacy 2.5 GT if there is any street Subaru people here that would like to hang out sometime. -Eli and Jessica-
