  1. If this is happening when you flick your key to the "on" position this is the relay turning the pump on to prime the fuel line and then clicking off so it doesn't keep turning the pump. Should be normal. open your passenger side door and see if you can hear the pump spinning.
  2. Depending on what kind of shops you have around you might find someone that can rebuild it for a lot cheaper than that (usually around 75-100) but it may take a day or two. the napa/etc ones aren't as reliable.. but if you need it now you need it now and it will still last a few years at least.
  3. +1 .. It kind of sounds like a clogging fuel filter to me. next after that i would check for vacuum leaks and fuel pressure.
  4. Fuel Filter? Mmm fuel pump issues with an xt.. this all too familiar to me. The first thing you need to do is test the voltage WHILE the motor is being cranked... it should be pumping 100% while cranking. If voltage is good in the 12.5 range then I would start checking the fuel sock on the "in" side of the fuel pump.. if you don't have a fuel sock your internals in the pump are probably bad now. I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned my fuel system.. eventually I had to take the tank out and pressure wash it. I had to replace all the fuel lines because of lot of them were cracking and not holding pressure. IS this an ea82 or an er27? (4 or 6 cyl?) If voltage is bad it may be a relay or wiring issue. Try direct wiring it.. i forget which colors are +/- (one should be black(-), also i think the pump has +\- on it near the terminals) but the pump will run in reverse and it is bad for it. On my xt6 the relay are under the center console near the passenger side of the shifter.
  5. As far as using the forest service roads they are all open and I don't know about needing any permits to drive on them. I think they are considered public. The actual state park it is required that you pay to use camping space. I think wood permits are $10 or $20 for like 4 cords of pine.. but you can only harvest from designated areas. It's nice to see that there are a few people in the area. I definately would like to see some trails in the black hills some time. I see a good amount of ru's around here.. even a few ea81s and ea82s. I think I'm the only one in the area with an XT though.. and man do i get stared at. I can almost hear peoples thoughts "I remember the commercials for those things. I didn't think there were any of those around anymore."
  6. Sorry if this has been covered i've been searching a bunch of threads and cannot find it. Is there an easy way to tell if you have heated mirrors or not? Like is there a button or light or something?
  7. 16" 5x100 bolt pattern. I'm not sure the offset. Recommended tire size: 205/55/r16
  8. Yeah my dad cruised me by there when I first got up here. Pretty interesting. I didn't get to look around much it was "closed" while I Was there. I'm not sure what state park you are referring to but there is one literally across the highway from our road.. about 30 minutes north of Carhenge (10 miles south of Chadron.) Lots of lakes and forest roads and backroads and stuff. Maybe we should try and plan something for Spring/Summer.
  9. I bought my '98 with 45,000 miles from a dealership. It drove perfect. I put 12 miles on it and blew a rod out the head.. i hear it's not too common of a problem. however, I do hear a lot of people complain about blowing headgaskets if the coolant is not filled/flowing properly. You didn't mention if it is a 5 speed so you may want to consider the auto tranny issues (torque bind when tranny not maintained and/or overheated transmission.)
  10. I believe this means he has the crank pulley with two belt slows but only one of them is being used. If you could wrap a rope or something around it and actually pull that hard.. it might work.. unless the engine is really really cold.. i couldn't even pull start an atv that was 10 degrees farenheit. Is this a problem a block heater (100 watt light bulb) might help having under your hood? Edit: I think if you could get an impact gun on there ... well that may be kiind of dangerous.. besides that radiator and stuff is in the way. I'm *fairly* certain they crank the same way you TIGHTEN the crank pulley bolt. Could be wrong.
  11. Oh yeah there's Rapid City guys huh? I can't wait to check out the Black Hills. Hey B, it's only 5.5 hours more, and at least it's not too hot here for you.. we have 4-8 inches of snow outside right now!! Snow runs every day!!! Nah man, the law didn't run me out of anywhere!! My parents bought this 8 acre "ranch" and wanted my help out here with the horses and building houses and whatnot. It's a pretty good little town and some good trails.. We're pretty much next door to a lot of forest service roads and a state park. I'm SOO bummed about the Brat.. you have no idea. All it needed was the drive shaft and the half axles and it was ready to go 5 spd lsd... The SVX I wasn't as sad about but it was 'totaled' and mostly paid off so it worked out.. the insurance was killing me. Still have the honda.. it's pretty worthless in this weather! Jessica and I are doing good.. we're still not married.. we spent a lot of money to be able to be in a position to take guardianship of these children. They deserve it though. Their home life was horrible! Anybody who thinks having kids changes your life, try taking two at once that are already on the edge of 5 and 7.. Yikes!
  12. In my 82 I had a snowboard touching the passenger rear corner window and hit a bump and the snowboard broke the window.. but it was laminated so I was able to just duct tape it up until I got one from a j/y. It was a lot harder getting the glass out of the junker than it was putting it in my car. If your rubber seals and stuff are good it's pretty easy. Sounds like vibration and bad glass install (probably one of those things Subaru doesnt want to admit to.)
  13. Been a while since I've been on the board. Seems like it's doing well. Jessica and I have moved to Chadron, Nebraska. All of our subies were practically given away except for the XT6 which I managed to get running. It made the whole 1200 miles after not running since '99!!! Ocassionally the check engine light would come on.. but as soon as I let off the gas pedal the check engine light would turn off. I haven't pulled the codes but I'm guessing TPS or wiring. I love how capable it is in the snow!! We have been granted guardianship of Jessicas niece (Bella, 4) and nephew (Christian, 6.) Their b-days are in January so they are almost 5 and 7. What a handfull kids are!! Being thrown into parenting sure is a challenge. But it is definately not without its rewards. They are adorable little monsters! Christian loves Subarus (my influence) and he calls the Xt6 "The Robot Car." I think he thinks its a Transformer. Anyway.. if anyone is the area with Subarus I sure would like to know. Any meets around here or anyone needing mechanical service? Anything terribly new with anyone in the last 6 months or year that I've been "MIA" (lazy.)?
  14. To relieve fuel system pressure you are supposed to disconnect your fuel pump power supply and then start your car and let it run until it dies. With the fuel pump not running it will suck the fuel out of the line but not through the pump. Have you check for vacuum leaks around the air box and tubes leading to the intake? Sometimes a vacuum line can come loose while changing the air filter and be over looked.
  15. I see it more like... "Hey man Im gonna jump this spot up here..." (Already going 85mph) "Nah dude, maybe you should slow down a little, remember that curve right after?" "Aww come on we'll be fine..." *hits jump* "Ahhhhhhhhhhh." "That was sweet dude!!!!" (upside down) "Time to get another wrx." If I had the money I'd be the same way. I jump ALL my subies.. even carbed ea81s. They jump great. I've never crashed from jumping. and all I want to hear if you object to me hitting a jump is "let me out." if you touch my hand brake or gear shift or key or ANY VEHICLE CONTROLS while my car is in motion I will pull over and we will fight. Don't take all these old people so seriously. I'm glad you and your friend are 'okay.' Subies are safe. Wear your belt. Have fun. Just don't do stuff like that where you're likely to hurt OTHER people. I've seen some nasty pics of wrx's IN peoples houses, bedrooms, etc.. like missed a corner and crash through their walls and wrap the sleeping people up in their matress under the car "in their house." I was glad to see it was out in the desert and no one was thrown from the car.
  16. In the 99 (motorswap) I did it only had 4 bolts anyway.. you've got my vote that the trannies will swap.. especially since it's a manual.
  17. You ask the guy how much experiance he has cutting CAR keys. This may be something you should do at a dealership or somewhere you KNOW has a competent key cutter. I think if you do it at a dealership and it doesn't work they have to replace it for free?
  18. Well... It fired up. Just gotta time her out.. any suggestion? 18? 22? it's BTDC right? Get a new fuel pump.. clean gasoline.. oil change.. tune up.. and it's ready for market.. too bad it's fwd... maybe i should convert it!
  19. Well.. i found a good ecu and all the voltage was good and it actually sparks now.. So I guess the disty was wired wrong after all.. or something.. I will post tomarrow when I get the fuel pump and a few other things plugged back in and take this baby around the block.
  20. The engine bay is grounded every which way but loose. where do i count pins from? I think 12v into the ecu(3 of them) is good but it's not putting 12v out to the blk/green.
  21. Continuity is perfect. If the disty was wired wrong would that mess up ecus? Does the ecu need to be bolted down so it's grounded ?
  22. Yeah the pins at the ecu.. see.. i dont know how exactly to test them... but if it's bad there it's the ecu? I will go test the wire for continuity right now.
  23. I HAVE SPARK!!!!!!!!!!! sort of. Okay I was doing some more testing.. and apparently I'm not getting proper voltage at the disty. I thought I had been.. but who knows. I took my plug apart so i could try plugging it differently.. and decided i dont care about this pos anymore.. and i hooked the positive lead from a jumper cable of a running vehicle on to the 12v plug of the disty. spark spark spark spark spark just fine ... can I get away with just hard wiring (with a fuse) a 12v line right into the disty? That's the black/green wire in case you're wondering. I guess it could be the ecu because it's not getting proper voltage out of the ecu or something. I hereby revoke my offer of $100
  24. 2 of the 3 ecu i've been using will just flash 5 shorts.. i think they are for something else.. one of them should be the loyale ecu. the 1 (original) ecu that has been flashing codes at me is no longer flashing anything. I'm getting voltage where it should be, as far as i can tell. I am not getting any igntion signal I guess. NO SPARK. $100 to the person that tells me what will make this car run again. His wife was driving it and it just died. No more spark. Did not over heat. Everything else seems to work good. I'll give you my phone number via PM if you think talking to me over the phone will help. I'm in Tucson, AZ. If this isn't fixed soon I am going to try and sell it as is to get my 200 bones back. Edit: What about internal problems? Would no compression or anything like that be a cause for a no spark?
  25. You must be thinking of a different thread. No swap here. I bought this 87 and it never would spark. I'm back to "how I got it" where i can get spark to come through the coil.. but it is more like a "short" spark than an ignition spark. meaning.. if I feather the b/w wire at the ignitor then the coil-disty wire "shorts" out on a ground. But it wont spark by cranking the motor... I'm sure everything is hooked up correctly now.
