what size are the ea81 lower heater hoses?
Spiffy replied to Spiffy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sweet, I'll pick some up on my lunch break, which is now... w00p! --Spiffy -
got a hole in one of my lower heater hoses last night on the '82 wagon... didn't have a chance to take the old one off and get a replacement since everybody closed early due to snow... going to the auto-parts store at lunch to get some hose stock, but I don't know what size it is... so, what size hose do I need to pick up for the lower heater hose coming from the heater core (firewall) going up to the uppre hose connectors? id/od? is there a better brand? I'll pick up some stock subaru hoses later, but need a quick fix for now... thanks! --Spiffy

so the northwest just got hit with some snow... went home for lunch and what do I see? awd subarus with tire chains on just the front wheels... ack!!! on the plus side, maybe we'll see a lot of cheap subarus for sale this spring with dead center diff's... just makes me sad... who sold them these chains?! --Spiffy

Stupid Dumb Question of the Day
Spiffy replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
and count the splines before installing it to make sure they gave you the right one... I got an axle for my turbo, and it wouldn't go on... finally I counted the splines and found they had a 23-spline in a 25-spline box... grrr! I've heard that if you need a 23 and get a 25 installed it will strip the splines off... so count first to be sure... I got lucky that mine was the other way around... --Spiffy -
I puleld out a stuck ford with my legacy GT a couple years ago... those ford drivers never learn... --Spiffy

so to get some clarity here... are you prepping the ej22 engine wiring to mate up to an ea81/ea82 vehicle wiring harness? and what's involved? send you specific parts of a specific harness? need some more elaboration... --Spiffy

Junkyard/Dealership Fun Before Work PICS!
Spiffy replied to Durania's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my gas is that full all the time... but I agree on the dash... that's like new... my gauge cluster is cloudy and needs a new plastic shield... --Spiffy -
Tired of your "flopping" fuel door?
Spiffy replied to TheYeti's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that's a really good solution... although it won't work for me, as I plan on backing through a lot of brush, and that would probably catch and open the door and bend it back... best to have a latch for that... but for normal street use, yeah, much better... and over here in Oregon you can't pump your own gas (*HF* to Jersey!), so it keeps the gas-monkeys from leaving your filler door open... *shakes fist at the air* --Spiffy -
Gl, Dl, Glf, Loyal Differances
Spiffy replied to Crawlerdan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
DL is a stripped down model... those that wanted the wonder of a subaru without paying much for it... Loyale is a newer stripped down model... they were trying to sell the Legacy so they took all the great little features out of the GL and called it a Loyale... interest dropped in the old ea82, and people started buying into the Legacy... I owned a loyale once... no map light, single range 4wd, no rear cargo light (wagon), etc... although it had power windows/mirrors... still missing those little things I love... GL seems to come with enough good basic options, that you can just find the extras and be happy... like myself, I won't own one without power windows... after all, when the dogs want air, I can't be stretching all over the place rolling windows down... --Spiffy -
yeah, I was checking that one out myself... but although I loved by hatch back in the day it's just not large enough anymore... maybe someday... for now I'll work on my wagons... one of each, ea82 and ea81, so I don't get bored... (: nice score... was wondering why I hadn't heard any more from you about the ea81 wagon parts... hehe... --Spiffy

this is what I was going to try next... put it in the garage with a little space heater in it for the weekend... let it just stay at like 80° all weekend... I'll pull up a piece of the carpet to see if it's still damp deep down there... it just feels so dry up on top... and it's not squishy... as least not the couple places I checked... --Spiffy

ok, so I've got a problem with my '82 wagon... the windows are ALWAYS fogged up... always... and I have to scrape ice off the INSIDE on cold mornings... I don't know why there's always moisture in there... there's no obvious leaks, nothing is damp, but the windows all condensate so much they drip with water... this morning on my break I went out and wiped all the windows down... 4 soaking wet paper towels... went out at lunch 2 hours later and the windows were still clear... got in and drove it home 5 miles and the windows were all fogged up again within a couple miles... heat works good, but the defroster is constantly fighting a losing battle agaist my visibility out the front windshield... (also my defroster doesn't seem to hit the spot right in front of the driver, but that's another issue) could there be water stuck in my vent system? the reason I'm asking is because (although I've had the car for 11 months) when I bought it there was a hole in the front windshield and I know some water must have got in there... but it's been dry (new window) inside for 11 months now, with a working heater... so if there was water in there it'd be gone by now... so where could all this moisture be coming from? I don't think the heater core is leaking or anything, at least not THAT much if it was... seriously, I've never had a car with such a bad moisture issue... thought maybe it was water caught in the doors... but my seals aren't that horrible, and I've never heard any water slashing around in there... and all my power windows still work good... any obvious things for me to check? --Spiffy

possibly because it was going the same speed as you, so you didn't feel it... which could explain some of your great MPG... and I can attest first-hand that a higher octane will give you more mileage... I used to run premium in my '85 GL d/r 5spd because I got a few more MPG out of it... not a lot, just enough to cost about the same as regular when you average it, but at least I could make it a few more miles and not ping as much... I had a 2000 legacy GT that got around 22mpg, but I drove it hard and mostly in the city... --Spiffy

yeah, that's called a turbo... to add turbo to a vehicle is not done lightly... I certainly wouldn't go adding in a weak 2.5" electric fan to my intake... especially if they're anything like my computer fans... get enough gunk on there and you've got a huge air obstruction... --Spiffy

there's no way those things could work, and all the results that google just came up verified it... --Spiffy

need help posting photos 50kb?
Spiffy replied to mykingcrab's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, get a good free image editing program like mikeshoup suggests... I wouldn't change the jpeg compression though, just keep making the image 50% smaller and Save As a different name until the file is small enough... you won't be able to attach anything large and detailed... if you want to do that then you'll want to use imageshack or something and link to the pictures at that site... --Spiffy -
1984 FSM is still available brand new from SOA
Spiffy replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no! I was doing it wrong! hehe! I was putting the part # in the advanced search, thinking that would cover everything... d'oh! put it into the part # search and it came up right away... thanks! --Spiffy -

I can't find any of those part #'s listed on that web site... "There is no product that matches the search criteria." do you have to call them or something? --Spiffy -
Yes. ... just be on alert, I've had some highway workers turn my car away saying I need chains, and I had to point out that it was 4WD/AWD for them to let me through... so depending on the region the workers may or may not be familiar with Subaru 4wd... I was going over the pass from California to Oregon, I think they don't see a lot of 4WD/AWD cars up there, only trucks, and that's why I was initially turned away... in california I've never seen R-3 conditions (and I lived in the Sierra's), either you are 4wd/AWD and carry chains (R-2), or the road is closed... btw, NEVER use chains on just one set of wheels on your AWD subaru... if you're going to put chains on it for some reaosn (I can't image why you'd need them on a regular snow-covered paved road) put them on all 4 wheels... --Spiffy

exhaust I've done 2 ways... on my '88 turbo I let Midas replace everything behind the cat... cost me $250... on my '82 wagon I bought everything behind the cat for like $30 here on USMB and then paid Superior Import Repair (Richie rocks!) to install it for me... total cost was around $100 for labor, helicoil (stripped exhaust threads in head), and misc gaskets... ... brakes I do myself... discs are easy, just pull off the wheel and there's 2 long bolts holding the calipers on... take those off, remove pads, twist the pistons down, replace pads, put back on rotor... for rear drums and rotor replacement you should get a torque wrench, and a couple new cotter pins to hold castle nuts in place... reason being it that you have to take off the main part of the brakes (rotor/disk or drum) and that starts getting tricky... just get a Haynes/Chilton manual and you can do the brakes yourself... ... struts can be a bit overwhelming... I'm about to delve into that on our impreza... you can get a spring compressor kit for like $10 (got mine at Habor Freight Tools)... you just need to remove the strut assembly (3 nuts on top of the strut tower, and a couple pinch bolts at the trailing arms) and you can compress the springs and get the strut out... if your ride height is really low and you can't adjust it back up then you may needs springs as well... time consuming, but a nice easy job... ... sounds like you'd want to do the brakes first, since they're pretty important... then exhaust, then struts... unless you need to pass a smog test soon, then exhaust first... --Spiffy

well I was able to get it on enough with some water-based KY equivalent from Walgreens... wasn't able to get it all the way on because of the angle and the amount of rust pushing against me... had to remove the upper hose and the pcv hose to get enough access for my hands... of course those came off and went back on with no problems... it's rusted through... I don't know who has brass pipes, but mine are silver, and really rusty and the tips are not all there anymore... (will post pics later if I remember) I got enough of the hose on the get a hose clamp around it and hold it on... that's going to have to work until it breaks or I am working on something else in the area... I think a webber conversion would clear up the clutter in that area nicely... --Spiffy

im looking at jumping back into the subaru world...
Spiffy replied to PeterD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a '91 loyale with a 3spd auto tranny... worst auto tranny ever... very sluggish... horrible up steep hills in 4wd... never again will I own an EA series auto... sold it to the ex-in-laws... of course, I hate automatics in general... they have made society into lazy, dangerous, inconsiderate drivers... (: --Spiffy -
So...I hit a tree in the Subaru...
Spiffy replied to burtonsnowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds like you got away pretty clean... $100 worth of parts and you're back where you started... sounds like it's time for a tube bumper... (: --Spiffy
