wipers only work on hi, dead everwhere else...
Spiffy replied to Spiffy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well it turned out to be a bad switch... thanks to Flowmastered87GL for being the first to suspect it and Skip for supplying the wiring diagram that showed it was the switch... thanks to XSNRG for the replacement column switch assembly, and bajavwnsoobnut for the wiper motor (which I didn't end up needing, yet)... and while I was under there I figured out part of my vent problem... it's true... after you mentioned it I looked on the back of that panel that the vent hooks to and I don't even see a spot that it could mount to... no screw holes or slots or obviously vacant space... since I think I need to replace my vent controls I'll check for it back there when I get a good vent control unit to swap in... -

awesome, thanks! I figure I'm totally blind, or it's in a different spot for my year... -

ok, so I'm starting to think that my car doesn't have this WIPER CONTROL unit in it... I'd like some more people to confirm or deny its existance before I give up hope and rip my steering wheel off to replace my switch assembly... -

I still haven't been able to locate this module... I even got a replacement one (it's grey) from XSNRG to replace it with... I just don't see it under my dash, black or grey... form left to right I see against the left wall a cruise control module, then a huge white connector with lots of plugs passing through it (basically behind the fusebox), then the ecu in the middle under the column, and then a cruise control cylinder that's attached to the gas pedal, then the heater controls on the center console... [cruise module] [huge white connector] [silver ecu] [cruise mech] [vents] can somebody be really, really specific with describing the location of the WIPER CONTROL module? thanks! -

yeah, I tried another wiper motor from bajavwsoobnut (thanks for the wiper motor!) and it did the same thing... so it's somewhere in-between... I'll probably just see if richie has some time to look at it one of these saturdays, since I'd like him to check out my vent/4wd vacuum problem anyways... (: -

there are 4 wires to the motor... (c is the connector clip) 1 2 3 4 c checking the voltage at each switch setting: hi - #1 12v & #2 12v lo - #1 12v & #4 9v int - #1 12v & #4 12v no voltage on #3, so maybe it's a ground or something... *shrug* does that look right? seems like there's power getting to the motor... I'm gonna guess that it's all internal to the wiper motor at this point... guess I'll replace that... -

it must not be too hard to miss because I don't see it anywhere... I tore off all the panels under the column and don't see any wiper relays or control box... I see what looks like a main computer box, and a cruise control box, but nothing with the wipers... lots of wires and connectors though... I also can't believe I stumped the rest of the board with this problem... go me! 29 views and nobody knows for sure... guess I'll take the tree switch apart and check there for bad connections... anybody else know what this problem could be? I'd really like to take a road trip, an hour ago... -

cool, I'm hoping it's just a relay or something... I'll tear my kick-panel apart and replace the little box... *heads to u-pull-it in a few* -
I left work today and suddenly my wipers only work on hi, they are completely dead on int and lo... so dead that if I put them on hi and then switch them to lo they will stop in the middle of the window... they worked fine this morning... just bad connections? in the arm on the tree? what's the most common cause of this? thanks!

yeah, sounds like it to me also, or at least something in the whole cap/rotor/wires/plugs area... there's just nothing obvious... going to replace the plugs and reconnect all the wires just to be sure... I can't even limp it out of its parking space right now... I checked on break and now it doesn't even want to idle... so I'm getting a ride home from a cow-orker and coming back on my bicycle to work on it...
-
well it was running fine after I changed things last night... and it ran great on the way to work this morning... then I let the car sit for 3.5 hours while I was working and I tried to leave at lunch and that's when the trouble started... I checked the plug wires to see if they were connected ok... I also checked to see if an obvious vacuum line came undone... not sure where the MAF connections are but I'll check my haynes manual... ah, of course, it's right there coming out of the air cleaner... is there any way to test it to see if it's good?

so the car starts fine, and the engine idles... but when I rev it up it stalls out... what's the problem? it was just fine this morning but now when I rev it up it just sputters and pops and then stalls... it was stuttering and popping on me a couple days ago too... I replaced the cap and rotor, and just replaced the fuel filter as well... it was fine last night and this morning after the cap/rotor replacement... *shrug* so what could be causing this stuttering, popping, stalling problem? guess I'm stuck here at work until I get it fixed... although I do have spark plugs with me I could put in... EDIT: it won't stay running at idle either... it eventually stalls out... I can't find anything disconnected, so I'm thinking something might be dying... if I can't figure it out are there any volunteers in the PDX area that can help me tonight or tomorrow night? (:

well I just finished cleaning all the switches in all the doors... all my windows work! and they're faster... so it wasn't that bad after all... I'd never had so many switches that didn't work so I figured that there had to be a problem somewhere... which there was, as the Rear-Left one wasn't plugged in at the door... (: whew! all better...
-
ok, I know this topic comes up all the time... but... this time it's MY windows, and a lot of them... (: so here's what I have... Front-Left - works great Front-Right - up doesn't work from door but down does, works fine from master Rear-Left - doesn't work from door or master Rear-Right - doesn't work from door, works from master now I figure that the front-right is just a dirty switch... easy fix... and the rear-right might also just be a switch, since it works from the master it must be getting power... the rear-left I'm not sure about... it doesn't work at all, so I don't know if it's a bunch of dirty switch contacts or something under the carpet... I'm going to clean all the switches on all the doors just in case... but if I need to look under the carpet where am I looking, and for what? I understand that there's some connections and relays under the front-right seat and carpetting under the dash... where should they have power? and when?

Speedometer Question
Spiffy replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
is that your excuse for zipping across Linwood so fast this evening around 5:15?! c(: my speedo in this new car sticks a bit too... I was thinking cable lube, but it seems from other's posts that it's electric... *shrug* I only noticed it because I check it against my gps and I saw it taking a long time to update my speed compared to the gps reading... luckily it's not too bad on mine, and I don't really speed much so I don't worry about it... but if you find an easy fix be sure to let us know... EA82 door lock question
Spiffy replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
weird... I've always had to use the key to lock my subarus with power locks... if I lock it and then close it then all the other doors would unlock... and it didn't matter if I held the handle or not... seemed like a good design... vw does the same thing, gotta use the key on the driver's door... *shrug* -
yeah, the first thing I did was replace the white canister and it had no effect... I suppose it's possible that I ended up with another bad one, but the odds are in my favor... *shrug* what's weird is that the vent controls don't go into that cylinder, but run across it... it T's off coming from the engine, one part going into the cylinder and the other going to the vent controls... then the other connection on the canister goes to the 4wd control... I suppose I could get ANOTHER canister and see if that's it... it seems like the most-likely cause of the problem... but it's odd that I'd have grabbed a bad one from the yard... it seems to hold pressure, as I remember it moving some air when I disconnected it... it's the most annoying problem and I have no idea what's wrong... I'd just like to have constant vent and 4wd controls...
-
I'm having some confusion too... because my vacuum is fluctuating and causing my vents and 4wd not to work right... vents won't work and 4wd won't disengage while excellerating... decellerating they both work fine... I'm not sure where the problem is... I've even tried putting a one-way valve in around the white vacuum canister but it didn't help... I really need to just look at somebody else's turbo wagon to make sure my hoses are in the right spot so I can start troubleshooting other things... *shrug* I found out it's really annoying in the snow, with intermittent defrost and 4wd controls... ):

go to Sears and get a Craftsman 15/16 12-point socket... pound it onto the locking nut with a hard rubber mallet and crank off with a breaker bar or large socket wrench... use a punch, or large screwdriver, to pound the locking nut out of the socket... a (padded) vice works best for holding while you pound, but try vice-grips and a sturdy surface... I use Craftsman because they're open on weekends and with lifetime garantee you can take the tools back in case you crack them while engineering solutions... (:

really? I thought they kept 185/80r13 for '85 and '86 and then switched to 185/70r13 in '87... *shrug* guess I should have paid more attention to my friend's '86...

yeah, you can see the white canister above the strut tower in the pic and the vacuum pump is where the hose ends below the strut tower... I suppose I should buy a little vacuum gauge and see if it's putting out enough vacuum... I just wanted to know if my lines looked like they were all running to the right places, and that there was no one-way cehck valves missing or anything... (:
