ok, so the hose has been replaced and it's STILL DOING IT... replaced clutch kit, slave and master cylinders, and soft line... so, I'm thinking it's gotta be something internal... what could it be? shaft marred so that pressure plate and bearings are binding on the shaft and not moving back to the clutch? is that possible? I'm not sure how everything in there is connected... anybody have a diagram of the clutch workings inside the bell housing? I'm probably too lazy to do this myself and will have to take it to a shop/dealer... which means big $ having them pull the tranny just to hope to find something wrong... --Spiffy

since you no longer have the car and we can't help you this isn't the right forum for this... should probably be in Meet and Greet... it's too bad you gave up and let them win... you could have had this resolved if you had persisted... subarus are great vehicles... hondas are also great... but I wouldn't buy a honda truck... they are great at making cars... --Spiffy

jdm? this person sure is hyping this thing up... they don't even state the year or options... is it rhd? wtf?! I flagged the ad for having keywords... and it sounds like trying to have a meet the weekend of thanksgiving is going to leave a lot of regulars behind because of family obligations... only an 8 hour drive west for me... (: oh wait, I don't know if the new kid's car seat will work in the ea81 wagon yet... --Spiffy

after a grueling 2000 mile drive we made it... biggest penske truck I could get (26'), but everything from the house and the 360 van in the back of it... towed the '82 on a trailer behind it... my friend followed in the '00 forester... here's a pic! we were almost to our destination... we left on monday 9/29 in the evening and got here thursday 10/2 in the evening... slept in the vehicles monday night just after getting into washington... tuesday night we got a hotel room... wednesday night slept in the vehicles again... it was sad to leave the northwest and the abundance of subarus... --Spiffy -
just talked to my old mechanic in Portland Oregon (Richie @ Superior Import) who said there was a service bulletin this last summer on the soft hose between the master and slave... I didn't replace that because it was on back-order... being in Wisconsin now I'm going to miss the plethora of subaru knowledge in the northwest... ): good thing for the internet... ordering and replacing the hose now... hopefully that'll solve it... I'm going to miss having Richie around to fix things I'm too lazy to do, and to clean up after my botched repairs... (: --Spiffy

ok, so I thought my clutch was dying, as it started slipping a lot, but not always... better safe than sorry I replaced the clutch... still slipping sometimes... replaced the slave cylinder... worked all summer and now it's slipping sometimes again... just replaced the master cylinder... worked yesterday after I picked it up, and started slipping again this morning during the wife's errands... each time something was replaced it seemed to do it less and less... but it's still doing it! the pedal feels fine... was a little "off" before replacing the clutch and slave... "off" meaning that it didn't feel as good as the '98 Imp after its clutch replacement, but now it feels "normal"... I've tried pumping the clutch pedal to see if that will release its grip on the clutch and let it fully engage but that doesn't seem to help... I checked the rod/pin where it attaches from the pedal to the master cylinder and it's not tight enough to even have tension, so it's not that the adjustment is out... besides, that would be always, not on and off... I've always just had to wait until it decided to start working again, which was usually overnight but was sometimes on the trip home halfway down the highway... what's the deal? is there something somewhere that could be catching something and not letting it release? --Spiffy

sound like the hi/lo linkage got out of whack... it's adjustable... --Spiffy

I'm moving away... will be packing all weekend and hopefully leaving on monday afternoon... --Spiffy

are you sure the hi-lo linkage is working correctly? --Spiffy

I had to check the map to see where iowa was in relation to wisconsin... (: about 4.5 hours to effigy mounds... 6.5 or more to duluth... I hope there's camping near effigy mounds... might be able to camp with the kid next year... --Spiffy -
damn, too bad I'm moving this weekend... although I've been so busy I haven't done a lot of needed maintenance on my car... which means it's an even better time to beat it up on the trails so I can fix everything at once! (: oh well, maybe I'll find some monstrous hills in WI to drive over... maybe an overpass or something... hehe... --Spiffy

it's hydraulic, so there's no adjustment... you're going to have to pull either the engine or the tranny... pull whichever one you're more comfortable doing... if you haven't done either I'd suggest pulling the engine, since it's easier to work over the engine than underneath it... however, if you need to replace your CVs or axles then pull the tranny... if you need to replace engine gaskets then pull the engine... it seems daunting, but it's really just time consuming... and as grossgary said, replace everything (throw out bearings, refinish flywheel, etc) while you're in there... --Spiffy

are you sure that the '85 is a 4wd model? according to cars101.com the '84 turbo was a full-time AWD tranny, but the '85 model came in fwd as well as 4wd... so make sure first... the old ea81 turbos have a good cool factor going for them... and a more reliable engine... but as stated they are rare and getting harder to find parts for... on the other hand the ea82 cars are abundant and parts are easy to find... it's true that the auto tranny sucks... it's slow (only 3 gears) and prone to break down... but the turbo has 95 horsepower over the 82 that the 1985 model has... yes, it makes a difference... --Spiffy

hehe, you're right, I totally missed the 75/70 part... but yeah, get as close as you can to the size you want... and get a gps if you want to know how fast it makes you go... (: --Spiffy

rear view maplight! interest?!
Spiffy replied to Zefy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
that's pretty cool! was there much modification needed? how is the spread of the light? where does it point? passenger? driver? both? I was thinking of grafting some ea82 map lights into my '82 wagon but I wasn't thrilled about chopping up my headliner or finding a way to mount them... plus they're very squarish... --Spiffy -

I'm bringing my '82 and '69, but they're not leaving my possession... (: I'll just taunt everybody with them... I'll have to remember Cindy's... I know parts aren't as plentiful out there... once I'm settled a bit and can hit some dirt I'll be posting for a meet-up of the locals... --Spiffy -

no... but since the wife will have help with the kid she'll be able to go back to school and get a degree... so if we both have jobs when we move back and the kid is in school we should be able to afford a fixer upper in the bad part of town... hehe... alone I estimate I make enough to buy a $150k house... the median home price in portland is $275k, and in manitowoc it's $93k... granted, I won't be making as much money out there, but your money goes a lot farther... and in the list of the 100 best places to live oregon doesn't even make it, although wisconsin only has one on the list... it'll definitely be interesting the next few years... --Spiffy -

wife wants to be closer to family and friends... brother could use some help with the family business... and the cost of housing is too much in portland... --Spiffy -
the tire size calculator says it's a 2.4% difference between 175 and 185, so 4.8% from 165 to 185... so yeah, not really enough to notice on an analog gauge if you use 175's... --Spiffy
-
ok, so I'm leaving the subaru paradise of the northwest and moving to wisconsin, land of rust and road salt... I'm not looking forward to watching my vehicles die a quick rotten death... so who here is in wisconsin? I'll be in manitowoc, but probably traveling to the northwest quadrant since that's where all the forest is and I'll need to get my fix on... wife wants to move back in 4-5 years, so the kid can go to school in portland... we'll see how things go... we're leaving for wisconsin on the 29th... --Spiffy

I think the GL had the 185 and the DL the 175... at least that's the way it was with the ea82/loyale... my gen2 GL wagon is 185... --Spiffy

I worry about getting robbed just driving through their without even parking... everybody knows you take that risk any time you park in richmond... keyed lugnuts? the ones with the special socket adapter to take them off are useless... you gotta have nice ones with an actual locking key that makes them just spin... if they also took an alternator then an alarm probably would not have helped... at least stealies are cheap... check the local tire shops... heck, you might even be able to buy your old wheels back... --Spiffy
