Any experience with carpet kits?
jonas replied to 1986Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just used my old carpet from my Brat as a pattern and got some carpet from my local home improvement store. Came out great, easy to do,and not a lot of $$. If you search my old posts i think i made a thread with pics about it, but it was a few years ago. -

I pulled the drive shaft and still have the same noise. I would think if it was the TS bearing, the noise would disappear without the shaft. I raised the front end and spun the wheels. When I spun the wheels I saw the tranny would rock/kick to one side once per rotation. Mounts are good so im thinking something internal and replacement gear box is in order. SInce it has already been swapped to a 5 spd I should be able to plug-n-play with the replacement? -

1983 Subaru Wagon GL Key switch needed
jonas replied to chuckl10101's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nice one on the duster hehe! Ok, disconnect the battery.pull the cover off the barrel, the piece with the on/off/acc stamped on it. It's crimped on so it's not hard to get off. slide out that black plastic piece on the bottom of the barrel. not sure if you can get it off at this point or you have to wait till the barrel is out, it's been awhile since i've done this. now, looking at the switch head on, at about the 5 o'clock position there will be a tiny screw (maybe not, i've heard some don't have it.) holding the barrel in. it may be covered up by a piece of solder or something like that. it is pretty easy to get out with some digging at it, at least mine was. once you remove the screw you should be able to insert your key and pull the barrel out. there might be a black plastic half circle(?) piece in front of the barrel you will need to remove. once you get the barrel out you will see the little spring loaded horse shoe shaped tumblers you need to pull out. once you have the thing apart it will make sense as to what i'm talking about. they are really simple. -
Need to ID year of 5 speed trans.

Cool, thanks. It's a 5 spd swap from a 4 so i'm not sure if the rear diff will be any help. -

Good luck. Good working early ignition switches are hard to come by. You could remove the barrel from the housing and pull the little horseshoe shaped tumblers from the barrel, but then any key will start the car. Not much different than any screwdriver being able to start it. -

Shouldn't there be some sort of ID mark to ID ratio? Really don't want to crack it open then have to do the same at wrecking yard. I like the operation of the current trans. and would like to keep the same. Or maybe there is a superior one for my usage? I do mostly highway driving. -

Thanks. Yeah, I have my suspicions about that bearing. Nothing has changed in the operation of the trans. and the fluid is clean. There is a little seepage of fluid there. -
Don't know what year of trans was swapped into my '85 Brat. May need a replacement soon. Getting a pulsing hum with a slight vibration coming from the gear box.

I'm starting to wonder about the imput shaft bearing. I see a bit of leakage and suspect it would give the same symptoms as a bad u joint? It is a swapped in 5 speed.
-
Rockauto is listing just a u-joint, then it has a rear u-joint listed. I know these are used for different vehicles so im thinking that I don't need a rear specific joint. My rear is fine but going to replace both since i'll have it out anyways.

Thanks guys, weber swap complete...but....
jonas replied to justajester's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes. With the Weber you will find you will have some dieseling that will require some fine tuning of the disty/carb. Get that hammered out first before getting a new disty. Once that is done you will probably find your backfire prob will disappear as well. Mine is well tuned but it will still diesel but very rarely, usually when hot out. -
Finally got plates for the Brat
