  1. Are you saying that when you unplugged the ABS connector the car wouldn't start at all? You probably need to do some more troubleshooting before replacing the motor/pump. You may be able to replace just the motor, but I haven't tried that. If you can I'd make sure to get a motor from the same brand ABS pump. There were two different brands I believe.
  2. Welcome Post in the wanted thread for the crossmembers. Folks check that more frequently I think than the meet & greet forum.
  3. Welcome to the USMB. Blue smoke is an indication of burning oil. It could either be from worn piston rings or valve guides. I'd suggest taking it to a mechanic to have them do a leak down test. That will tell you the health of the engine and pin point the problem. Depending on what you find, they may suggest fixing the specific issue, rebuilding the motor, or swapping in a used motor.
  4. Welcome to the USMB Rob. Did you end up getting some help with your Subie?
  5. Steve, Regarding your readings on the TPS, some of the readings like the resistance when open and close....as long as they're close it's ok. If the book says 12 kohms and you're reading 10 kohms or something like that, it's not a big deal. However your other readings should be right. Are you sure you are reading the correct pins? Do all the spare TPS's read the same? Is your TPS connector wiring the same as what is in these pictures? http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru/images/tpsconnector If you can't get your image hosting setup, you can email me the pics and I will host them.
  6. Exedy makes Subaru's clutches, however after doing a little homework when researching clutches for my 6spd swap I discovered that the stock STi 6spd clutch has dual springs on it vs. the Exedy aftermarket only having one single larger spring. This thread on NASIOC has some pictures and more info. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2092146
  7. According to this scan from the factory manual, http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/absdiag.jpg code 9 is a faulty motor and/or motor relay or broken or shorted harness circuit. Does the ABS work at all? With the key in the ON position, but engine not running....if you unplug the electrical connector on the ABS pump, do you hear it run at all?
  8. Yeah, it sounds like something is not right from what you described about the AFR's. It definitely shouldn't do that. I don't think the idle switch would cause that. Let us know what codes are there.
  9. You said the torque converter wasn't fully seated. Did you realize this before or after you put the engine back in & fired it up? Did you reseat the torque converter? Typically if the torque converter is not seated all the way and you bolt the motor up it will damage the oil pump in the transmission.
  10. You can follow the instructions on my website as they give the proper procedure. www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/engine.html To perform the read memory mode, you connect just the black connectors and do not connect the green T connectors. If you want to perform the active diagnostic, you connect only the green T connectors. If you want to clear the ECU memory, you connect both the green T & black connectors.
  11. Welcome fellow Houstonian to the USMB
  12. Welcome to the USMB Here are the Legacy body model codes 1990-1994 Legacy Sedan - BC Wagon - BF 1995-1999 Legacy Sedan - BD Wagon - BG 2000-2004 Legacy Sedan - BE Wagon - BH I am not positive whether the Outback shares the same model codes as the Legacy. I think it may up until 2005 when Subaru split the Legacy & Outback into two completely different models.
  13. Unless the throttle is actually sticking close, I do not recommend cleaning the throttle body. There is a black sealant that is installed at the factory and then the TB is calibrated to flow a specific amount of air through it.
  14. Ok, thanks for the feedback, that's good to know! The sensor in my 6spd is the 3 wire VSS.
  15. I know you said you checked the voltage, but did you happen to check the resistance of the injectors to see how they compare to one another?
  16. Your issue sounds like the coolant temp sensor may be going out. They are around $20-$25 from one of the online subaru dealers. I'd probably suggest starting with that.
  17. Ok, I've had limited exposure to the electronic speed sensors on the stock Subaru setup. I am running the electronic speed sensor output from my 6spd directly to my stand alone ECU and it works fine. It should work to run the VSS directly to the ECU. The calibration may not be correct, but it really doesn't matter that much, as long as it's in the ball park, the ECU will be happy.
  18. Welcome to the USMB! It sounds like one of the cylinders isn't firing properly. What I'd suggest doing is pulling off, one by one, the electrical connector for each injector and see if it changes how the engine runs. If you find one that doesn't make any change or makes less of a change, you can isolate your troubleshooting to that cylinder. You can also do this same test with the spark plug wires to check the ignition system.
  19. Welcome to the USMB and glad to hear you are liking your new Subie!
  20. You could swap in the newer style electronic speed sensor into the transmission and run that to the ECU to get a speed signal, but then you'd lose the speedo cable going to the cluster. As for the idle switch, it needs to be adjusted on the TPS. Follow these instructions: http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/TPS_testing3.jpg Here are the rest of the scans if you want them http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/TPS_testing1.jpg http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/TPS_testing2.jpg
  21. Have you had any continued issues since posting this? I'd suggest checking if any codes are stored. If nothing comes up, I'd just chock it up to a fluke and keep an eye out if the symptoms come back.
