Welcome to the USMB. If it's possible, I would recommend using all the timing components off the original engine. Additionally, I'd probably suggest swapping the intake manifold. I think the auto and possibly California spec engines have EGR. If you use your original intake manifold, I would suggest just using a bolt or similar to plug the hole on the head. I am going to move your thread to the New gen forum as more people review that for technical questions.

Looking for diagnostic school in WA

I don't know of any specific schools, but do know there are quite a few people in the area, so hopefully you can get some feedback. -
My brother got his car back almost 2 months later. Based on what he found in the car it appeared that the theives were likely "all around" low lifes. He thinks the only reason they ditched the car was that the registration was about to expire. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/147499-brothers-1996-legacy-wagon-was-stolen-from-northgate-north-of-seattle-found/ He's in the process of cleaning things up and will likely be installing a kill switch and another anti-theft device, which I thought was pretty ingenious.

There is a pretty decent size Subaru following in Texas. We haven't had an "official" state meet in a couple years. However there are shows or events that pop up. The most recent was the "Big Event 6" in Houston. Here's some info, http://www.gillmansubaruhouston.com/the-big-event.htm. They have done it every year for the past several years. So that may be something to plan for next year. You may also want to check out the SE regional forum on NASIOC to see if there is anything else going on closer to you. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=21

Ren, Welcome to the USMB! There are a lot of knowledgeable people on the USMB and should be able to provide some input on the Subaru drivetrain if you decide to tackle the project -

Total Newb to Subaru's
Legacy777 replied to ouird's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Yeah....it's a little hard to tell. I've had some very un-adjusted lifters that caused an unholy noise. I would recommend having a shop take a look at it. The valve covers come off pretty easily and the rocker assembly again comes off without too much effort. Can you try and narrow down whether the noise sounds like it's coming from the center part of the block or more towards the heads? -
Total Newb to Subaru's
Legacy777 replied to ouird's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
The timing belt has an automatically adjusting tensioner. It's possible one of the idler pullies has worn bearings that may be causing the noise. Can you take a video of the noise and post to YouTube? -
