hehe, i fully understand your concern about the light vs gauge thing - but I am definitely a gauge person, so in my case, the light is nothing more than a waste of electrical wiring. it has also been my experience (yours may vary) that most "idiot lights" dont turn on until damage is already done (ie - way too late to actually do any good) where as a gauge will give indications of problems in advance of damage being done (if, as you suggested, the operator actually checks said gauges - which i do) My case in point - my 1990 Legacy has only a water temp gauge - nothing else. I recently had to replace the alternator - I had no warning system to let me know the thing was on it's way out - i didnt "know" it was going until it was done - as in all of my dash warning lights came on suddenly. Had I had a real gauge, i would have known it was going well before it completely quit on me (and yes, i AM putting in a voltmeter as well as the oil pressure gauge!) Personally, i think ALL vehicles should have at least the bare basic gauges - water temp, oil pressure and voltmeter - and how to check/read them should be taught in drivers ed. Seriously - lets get back to the BASICS of driving - too many people have gotten entirely too lazy in that dept cause the car does it all for them.

was going to ask if any progress had been made - hmm, sounds like things are getting worse? battery draining while sitting - could be any number of problems - but combined with the possible disty issues....very carefully inspect the wiring around the coil, disty, battery and alt for any damage that could cause a short. triple check all the ground wires - make sure they are clean, in good repair and tight. and just because - i added a ground wire from the coil bracket to one of the front strut mount bolts on my old GL due to rust issues - the bracket grounds on the fender well thru the mounting bolts - if it isnt getting good contact there, it can cause issues - adding the extra ground wire helped mine tremendously. would also recommend disconnecting the battery when you are done poking around for the day to prevent the drain and possible damage to the battery. please keep us posted. -
Google is your friend, young naive man... Louie Armstrong was only one of the greatest jazz trumpet players ever (and a singer as well) Ella Fitzgerald (same era as Louie) was the "first lady of song" - jazz singer.

hehe, yeah, i know - but we can attempt to edu-ma-cate him, cant we?? hmmm, seems to me we have that album on cd here somewhere... i grew up with "tokers" and listening to Floyd as well as Hendricks, Joplin, the Doors and so on... ah, the good ol days...

spark plugs and wires - NGK all the way. for your gaskets - i (the other half) got a complete gasket set from ebay - had everything I needed and then some - they seem to work fine - just did a reseal/timing belt job on my 90 Legacy 2.2 like 3 weeks ago (212,500 and counting). Oh, you will want to pick up a tube of ultra-grey too, for doing that oil separator plate on the back, and it can also be used on the oil pan (no gasket)

you dont need to buy a compression tester - you should be able to "borrow" (rent) one from places like advance auto, or whomever has tool rentals. shouldnt cost that much. now I am gonna do a little hijacking of my own - I want to put an oil pressure gauge in my 90 Lego - a really cheap one! LoL my question is, do i need to keep the stock idiot light sender (ie: T fitting), or can i ditch that and thread the gauge fitting directly in there?

uh, no - Pink Floyd - Uma Guma now THAT is some trippin tunage.

ROFL i dunno about painting the whole basement - but a few "accents" here & there might work!

1991 Loyale Alternator Question (car audio)
heartless replied to Sgtdisturbed47's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the stock system is designed specifically around the car's stock requirements - anything above and beyond the STOCK items WILL kill the alternator more quickly - this is a proven fact via life experience for me. I had a cheap after market stereo (nothing fancy, no amps, kickers, etc) and a set of 100w driving/fog lights installed on my old GL wagon - that car was eating alternators at the rate of about 1 per year if i used the driving/fog lights on a regular basis(thank goodness for "lifetime" warranty) if I did not use the lights unless absolutely neccessary, it would last longer (keep in mind i had this car for about 8 yrs - lots of time to experiment) when you take your measurements - how about doing it with the car running, headlights on, heater/ac on, windshield wipers on, rear defrost on, and any other "accessories" that you may have that you run frequently, and your stereo equipment ....because that would be more "real world" than measuring JUST the stereo equipment by itself. Take a look at the load you are putting on your charging system then.... -
aw, gee thanks Tom. here ya go...they even have it in white...little pricy tho http://www.starlight.com/blkpaint.html this one is a little cheaper, but no white... http://www.blacklightworld.com/glow%20paint.htm

dont know if it would help - but i have a pdf version FSM (engine) for 1989 model year - most of the engine related stuff should be pretty much the same, shouldnt it? Dannoo - sent you a pm regarding this... hmmm, maybe i should see about getting it posted in the USRM for others to use as well.... -
Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the 80's models only had one cat converter - at the Y-pipe junction. At least that is what my 89 GL had (and the 89 GL DR 4whl dr and the 88 GL 3 dr, and every other Subaru from that era I have ever seen) after that there should be a resonator and a muffler - not another cat.

the stock gauges are not known for being ultra accurate. My question would be what weight oil are you running? - different oil weights will give very different readings in the same car
-
you really want something fun??? try an old OOO-gah horn! had one - an original one from an old ford - not the aftermarket repro. had a lot of fun with that horn.
-
afraid I cant actually answer that one for you, but to my mind, once that kind of thing starts, it tends to continue in the same "pattern" if you will - I am sure someone with more knowledge in physics could answer more completely for you tho. regardless tho - you REALLY need to go get an INSPECTION of the suspension - by someone OTHER than your dealer. Talk to friends, neighbors, co-workers, find out who they go to/trust for suspension work, then go there - an inspection should not cost you much - doesnt take long either. My local repair shop charged me $25 to do a complete suspension inspection - they then pointed out all of the things found, gave me a printout of recommended repairs and I was out of there (i did take it back later & let them do the rear wheel bearing that was going out)

resetting check engine lite
heartless replied to bgambino's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
there are instructions in the USRM area. EA82 trouble codes writeup will explain what to do. or you could always do the tried & true method of disconnecting the battery overnight... -
