All cb's are supposed to have a small speaker in them - the question is whether or not they work...and if they do, how well...some sound like crap and it is better to have an external anyway. my guess is the one in that cb is blown - doesnt take much to blow one of them.

Where's the fun in that???? how better to utilize the AWD than slip sliding around in cow poo???

While i would love to donate $100 or more to this fabulous source of information about all things Subaru - my reality is unemployed and very limited funds. I do try to give when i can, even $5 bucks helps a little, but i also understand that if not enough people are sparing even $5, it just isnt enough. that said here are a couple of my thoughts... I kind of agree with the "for sale" sections of the forum being restricted to "donating" members of the community - trying to enforce any kind of '% of sales" thing would be a logistical nightmare, one I am sure no one really wants to take on. I belong to another forum (airbrushing) that has very basic info available for free, but a paid "membership/subscription" gets you access to a TON more "stuff" and it does seem to work for the owner of that site, as once someone finds out about all the "extra" stuff (there is a page dedicated to advertising what would be available and it has several subscription options) more people seem to sign up for the paid portion. My thought here would be to go for blocks of time 3 months, 6 months, a year, etc. also, if one were to go the tiered levels thing - not real sure about showing the various level colors in the general forums - I have an issue with that sort of thing - it's kinda like rubbing it in others faces that one can afford to donate at the highest level, while someone else cant. it can be shown to the user in thier control panel what level they have paid for, but i dont feel it is something that needs to be "advertised" to everyone and anyone. Raffles are nice if you have the extra to buy tickets, but again, some of us have very limited cash flow, and as a result, can not afford to buy raffle tickets - at any price. :-\ just my 2 cents worth from the "cant afford to pay attention" corner.... -
YAY!!! Pictures!!! looks pretty good - altho the valance is very obviously much darker than the fenders...i like the darker color myself... like your little camera mount, too - how is that attached?

My New Project - '87 Subaru GL Wagon
heartless replied to SubaruGL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
congrats on resurrecting your "free" car! my first Subaru was an 89 GL wagon that I paid $150 for - then promptly sunk another $1100 into! BUT - I did drive that car for about 8 years with very little else put into it other than basic maintenance before the rust cancer took her out of commision! the lights on the dash coming on - unless there other obvious symptoms of other problems - can very well be related to alternator problems - Very common symptom of the alt going south...loose belt can cause similar issues, but i would put my money on the alt. the noise you are hearing could possibly be heat shields rattling, and other than being annoying, wont hurt anything. If it was a consistant sound, across the full rpm range, it would be more worrying, but the way you describe, sounds like heat shields to me (didnt listen to the vid) good luck with her - once you get things sorted out, these old cars will run for darn near ever! -
What happened to my dash lights?
heartless replied to mschafe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
on my 89 GL wagon, the dimmer protion of the light switch was completely crapped out - as in the coils were burned thru - so no dash lights at all. basically, i bypassed the dimmer portion & wired in some led's along the bottom of the dash panel - drilled small holes for the led housing to fit thru between the gauge faces and the clear outer cover - kind of ugly, but it worked. had always intended to "do it up" right, but never did get around to it. -
I will, Tom - and thank you, too. It is nice to know one has friends when they are needed. Got to get taxes taken care of before i can do anything else - know anyone that wants a classic pick-up truck?? easily worth twice what I am asking for it! LOL So anyway - where are the pics???? this thread is worthless without pics!!!!

yupper - lookin good! but please - stop already! LOL you are embarrassing me!

Seems to me you are also talking about a difference between manual trans and auto trans - and yes, it DOES make a difference! fuel mileage will 9 times out of 10 be better with a manual than with an auto. difference in weight of the two cars is also a big factor. so comparing a 1997 to a 2010-11 - even tho both are Subaru - is almost like comparing apples to oranges - the differences are enough that it can, and will, be noticed in the fuel consumption.
-
Yur welcome - glad to "help out". trip TO michigan went fine - it is what happened after I got there that kind of sucked! popped a brake line on the ol dodge! for the front brakes of course! but didnt take too long to fix and trip home went pretty well, too. just dog tired right now...pulled an all nighter to avoid traffic & get home. oh, and we think we might have a wheel bearing starting to go on the dodge now... where's my Subaru?!?! LOL ok, so when do we get to see the pics of that super duper taiwanese front valance installed??????? Hmmmm??? I'm waiting....

FNG asking for advice
heartless replied to The FNG's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
for the most part those are pretty decent cars, just dont expect a lot of hp out of it - that is not what they were designed for. it will however get very good fuel mileage for its age if it is kept up. EA82 engine is non-interference, but does require regular timing belt maintenance - it isnt all that difficult with some good basic instructions which can be found here. these are also prone to oil leakage - as 19-20 yr old seals get old & brittle they tend to leak. it isnt a huge problem, but be aware of it and make sure you check theoil regularly. also make sure the cooling system is up to par - these motors do NOT like to get hot. Tranny - really shouldnt have any problems with the 5 spd - check the diff oil - if it stinks like rotten eggs, it is in need of a change. only other thing i can think of right of the top of my head is the alternators arent the best on these - and can cause all kinds of weird issues when they go kaput. -
no, there is nothing "express" about my sun/moonroof - at least not when sliding it back - the "up" function is pretty quick LOL also, when "closing" from the slid back position - it will close to a certain point, then stop, you have to release the button and hit it again to close fully - some sort of safety thing - they want you to make sure there are no fingers in the way? yeah, there should be some space between the headliner & the metal roof of the car - it will vary by location as to how much. just had a thought - how big is your existing switch housing? - from the pic it doesnt look like it is too big - it might be possible to remove the factory switch and cut/trim the housing to fit your switch in its place?
-
yup, one green wire w/yellow stripe powers in - grounded thru the mounting screws, runs to one light then the other... tom - there is no "popping" the switch out - you could remove the buttons, but that would be it - the surround is solid... wire diagram sent.
-
pics are here - sent you a pm - I have the factory wire diagram for this thing if you want it - might help you determine if you can use the switches or not... also note that the area where the maplight housing is mountied is "raised" from its surroundings... (and the dents in the headliner were from some toothpic sized flags...the ones you get from veterans)
-
i have a first gen legacy with the factory sunroof/maplight controls - i can take some pics or the wiring connections for you if you want...
-
yeah, 17 does seem pretty low - but i guess it depends on what engine, driving style and what not - but still.... my 90 LS wagon, auto AWD, normally gets 28-30 in the summer with a summer type tire on (harder compound than winter tires) got 25 just the other day on a longer trip - interstate - 75mph or so - and the softer winter type tires... the other half's 90 L sedan, 5SPD FWD - did 32mpg on the same trip yesterday - he has gotten as high as 36 before on that trip with different tires and warmer weather - currenty same tire i am running both are 2.2's with over 200K on them
-
Winterforce are good winter tires - but as you have already found, fuel mileage does suffer a little - reason being they are a softer, "stickier" tire which means more rolling resistance - Great for use in snow/slush as they softer compound has much better traction, not so great on dry road. kind of a trade off. in the interest of my safety, i will take the better gripping tires in crappy weather and deal with the lower fuel mileage. and yeah - the colder the temps, the lower your fuel mileage will be also (even without much warm-up time)
-
why is everything backwards on the dash?? lol, mine is the exact opposite of that pic... I hit 207K the other day...
-
even if you dont make this one drivable again - the drivetrain itself should be fine with a fluid change and could easily be put into something else - plus there are plenty of other parts that could be salvaged if needed. good drivetrain alone is worth the $500...
