1981 DL 1800 wiring help
OldieSubie replied to OldieSubie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey y'all, so I got the new voltage regulator and installed it! I have a question about the loose black wire with the female bullet connector and it's purpose. I don't know what it connects to and what it's used for. Also, because I installed the proper part into the car, the fuel pump isn't getting power, any ideas? The two pictures below are of the voltage regulator (left) and the hack job of previous owners (right). Any help would be appreciated! I tried looking at the schematic and it's isn't very clear -

I think I figured out what those wires are supposed to be....a voltage regulator! It all makes too much sense now. A friend of mine was just trying to figure out why my new alternator was blowing a fuse and said that i should replace my voltage regulator because my old alternator was 41 years old, and assumed that the regulator wasn't changed either. Turns out that I don't have one!...but I'm supposed to. I need to wait a few days for the part to come in and I'll post pictures. I have done a lot of replacing of old ignition parts and the likes trying to resolve many car issues, and I think this will be the biggest improvement to date! -
My wiring diagram shows that the alternator goes to a voltage regulator....and that just happens to be where a previous owner installed a relay and crammed 6 out of the seven wires into three wires to fit the relay. I've been trying to figure out where the grey connector goes to, and this post gave me the much needed breakthrough!

Can someone post a picture of the voltage regulator? I have an 81 DL 1800 and I think someone jerry-rigged a relay as a VR. And it's been the bane of this cars existence since I've become an owner. I have been searching everywhere for what the grey harness connects to, and I think it is the Voltage Regulator.

Thank you everybody for your help! I have been pretty busy for the last week or so, I'm trying to stay on top of this post and the car, and a apologize for not being very active on here. I will look over the electrical schematics and see if I can make it mirror in my car. -

Hey Bennie, Thank you for the pictures! What model is yours? I am asking because I feel like I'm the only one with two 7-pin connectors in the engine bay ( a blue one and a white one) I see yours is a blue-to-white connector, but what leads to the fusible box and relay is just normal wiring.....what am I missing or what is unique about what I have? This is slightly irritating. -

After a few minutes of looking< I need part 46 and 47. Does anyone have a picture of those two parts on their vehicle? I just want to see the wires going into the box and what the inside of that box looks like. I can make a DIY box, just the wiring, fusing and relay wiring is what I need guidance with. Edit: Parts 34 and 35 (Fusible Links) are still available through subaru parts online! -

Moosens, Thank you so much for looking! I won't be able to get into you pictures for at least a day, but this will help me figure out what should be there instead of this janky mess. -

Moosens, Thanks for looking into it. I'm still trying to scour the internet and find any glimpse of a DL with my wiring set up (factory wise). -

Hey Bennie, Yes, that's exactly what had happened. The previous owner took four wire from the relay side, joined them together and added a black wire to feed into the relay. -

Ok, the gray/white plug that goes to the mysterious relay has wires as such: White: 12V Hot White/Red Stripe: 12V Switched Black/White: 12V Switched Blue/Yellow Stripe: ? Yellow: ? White/Black Stripe: ? Black/Tan Stripe: ? The Relay side is as such: White goes to Blue White/Black Stripe goes to Yellow *Blue(Blue/Yellow Stripe pin) joins with White/Red Stripe *Yellow joins Black/Tan Stripe Black/Yellow Stripe (Black/White Stripe pin) goes to nothing. White Relay wire is Ground *= These four wires join to one Black wire and feed into relay point 85 Relay Diagram: 85: Black wire 86: White wire (Ground) 87: Blue wire 87a: N/A 30: Yellow wire -

I've read over the service manual that I downloaded for an 83, and there are some differences between what I have and the 83. If there is a digital 81 service manual out there, I haven't found it yet. And a really large portion of the 83 manual I have is missing in regards to the electrical chapter. I did note and list the wires going to the relay and to the loom at the gray connector. I will boat it later today when I have the chance....although I don't know what these wires originally went to still. -

Moosens, I'd really appreciate if you could post some diagrams! I'm about to bite the bullet and but a service manual from: https://www.faxonautoliterature.com/1981-Subaru-Repair-Shop-Manual-Original The PDF that I downloaded has a lot of missing pages in the electrical section, there isn't too much I could do. Plus, it's for an '83...so the wiring is a bit different. -

6 Star, Thank you for the photos! It looks much more stock than mine haha! And the mud is a good look on there! This will be a great reference to see what's different about my set up. -

6 Star, I would love pictures of your 82 GL! So I placed a 20 Amp fuse into the holder: it didn't blow! Now I realized this morning that I cannot run anything with the headlights on (high beams: everything works, day time running lights: everything works) just normal headlights will turn the radio, wipers, blower fan, washer spray pump, and radiator AC fan off. On the other hand...everything stays on even when the car is off. -

Hey Bennie, Thanks for the pictures as a reference. What size fuse is in that glass fuse holder? I found mine had a 20Amp in it. Also, when I turn on the bypass switch, it will blow the glass fuse. So I'm trying to figure that one out as well: where is the short. -

My next step is figuring out on how to keep the fuse from blowing and to revert the wires to stock setup. Also, I need to test out the function of the radiator temp sensor. -

So on a whim, I pulled the fuse holder and placed a jumper wire between the two ends....and everything started working! Radio, AC fan went on when I turned the blower on, the blower turned on! Front wipers worked! And the washer sprayers too! Only the rear wiper wasn't turning, I'll have to investigate it. Also, from what I saw I had two fusible links -

The blue 7 pin connector is good. The gray 7 pin connector that the new relay is attached to, had all of its wires cut and four of them are crimped together and feed into one wire leading to the relay. One wire (black/yellow) isn't attached to anything. I'll get a closer picture of it. I know the fuel pump works off it because if I wiggle the wires, the pump will lose power. I just don't see anywhere that these wires would've terminated. And thank you for showing me the picture! -

Hey el_freddo, Thanks for the reply! Do you have a picture of what the factory setup should be? I'm half tempted to redo the whole positive power cable up the fusible wires. I'll have to take off the electrical tape and see if there was a third wire there before. Also, the diagram in the service manual doesn't show the white/gray 7-pin connector...only the blue 7-pin connector is present. Is it because the service manual is for an 83? None of the fans go on even if I have the fan switch grounded. I suspect the fuse holder with the blue wires is causing everything to not work, which makes me believe that it was a fusible wire at one point( when I stuck a 20amp fuse in, the AC blower fan turned on until the fuse blew). -
