  1. while changing the plugs on the 2.2 9 legacy, i noticed oil on each plug and i was told at dealer valve covers ar leaking. sounds like this is common. what is involved in changing the gaskets? i am new to the foriegn car world and the valve coers i am used to are easy to repair. how are these to replace? the engine looks very intimidating, not that i am afraid of it. where can i find a good manual on the design and operation of this machine?
  2. where in the world can i find the 4 wire o2 sensors i need for my 99 legacy. both have the dreaded 4 wires, but all i can find is a rear universal 4 wire and all others are 3 wires for the front. lots of sites say for the 4 wire front use denso 234-9018 or equivilent, but i cannot find em anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the dealer wants 149 and 119 so thats a whopping 270$$$$$$, so you can see why i am looking for an alternative. please don't tell me oxegensensors.com, cause they don't have it either, so PLEASE HELP ME> DanO
  3. are all 99 legacy speedometers on the left and the tach on the right in the instrument cluster. also, is the gas on the left and temp on the right? the reason i ask is cause my legacy is right hand drive, so the entire cluster is on the right hand side, i am replacing the speedo and just want to make sure they are all in the same config as mine. also if anyone has a link to a subaru right hand drive parts link, i'd appreciate it. thanks, DanO
  4. one other thing, i toook my dash cluster out again today, removed the speedo assy, checked for any bad solders, visible cracks in the circuit board, put it back in and what do ya know, THE DAMN thing works. only drove a couple of miles, i'm gonna keep an eye on this and keep all those who speedo's have failed updated. 5. also, i did alittle electronic fooling around , i took out the instrument cluster, hooked up my voltmeter, with the positive probe connected to the wire from the tranny that plugs into the speedo. while sitting still it showed no voltage, but as i accelerated, the voltage pulsated until i reached @ 10 mph, then it stayed at 2 or 2 - 1/2 volts DC. i am assuming that the magnet and the wheel in the tranny are doing their job. i am gonna get another cluster and keep all informed about the results it looks to me that the error code must be recognizing the problem between the speedo and the computer. hey, if anyone has contadicting info, PLEASE chime in before i and others spend money foolishly on parts. DanO
  6. just got off the phone with parts guy at dealer, just to inform all that on the 99 legacy with 2.2L he says the vss is in the dash cluster. i wouls asume that the wire from tranny sends a pulse and the sensor decphers it and then the speedo goes. hopefully this is where the error code comes from on MY car. i will repair and report back with an update. DanO
  7. josh, what is the fsm that you looked at. i do see 3 sensors, but they all look alike and they all look internal. i sure hope i don't have to drop the tranny to change it. send me a reply if you can. DanO
  8. yes i do, it must be thespeedometer sensor cause the speedo doesn't work all the time. i have looked and all i can see is wires that bolt to the upper sides 3 or 4 of them, but i can't seem to find the "usual" sensor that is bolted into the tranny with a plug on it. boy, now i appreciate how easy my taurus was to repair. thanks, DanO
  9. after crawling under my 99 legacy(postal) wagon and seeing two cats each with it's own o2 sensor, i am wondering, do all of the wagons with the 2.2L have this exhaust type? i have seen aftermarket(cheap) cats for this car but only with one cat. i guess what i am trying to figure out, is if i find a low mileage wreck at a junkyard, will i find a matching replacement cat setup instead of the 700-1000 bucks at the dealer. DanO
  10. thanks guys, the dealer told me map, i was at the site you attached and thats where i heard of maf. i will keep an eye out for one on ebay and about. DanO
  11. my 99 legacy's obd-2 says the map sensor is shot. i have read that subaru's had a maf then map sensors. my car is a california emissions car with a 2.2L and auto tranny. any help would be appreciated. thanks, DanO
  12. i have a 1999 legacy wagon(postal) with california emissions setup. the vehicle speed sensor has a problem (speedo doesn't work all the time) and the obd-2 code says there is a problem. WHERE the heck is it. it's an automatic tranny on a 2.2L motor, i see what looks like 2 or 3 wires that bolt to the tranny, but no electrical plugs that plug to a sensor. can anyone tell me in detail where it may be. Thanks again, DanO
  13. i have a 1999 legacy wagon(postal) that has california emissions setup, with 2 converters and 2 o2 sensors. i live in connecticut though and the car has failed the state emissions. seeing that a new converter will run me @700.00 am i able to install an aftermarket single converter ? i am worried about the 2 o2 sensors. i am afraid the obd-2 will detect a problem. does anyone have any input or ideas, if so let me have it! thanks, DanO
