Why do people rely so heavily on compression braking?
ecky replied to markjs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I double clutch to slow and stop all of my cars. I notice no clutch wear except for after Iet my niece drive. My 2wd Toyota PU basically has no rear brakes so down shifting greatly shortens my stopping distances. -
I've had my EA71 to 6,500 RPM no floating, knocking or anything of that nature. I was on the freeway and even held it there for a few miles. The oil pressure light flickered a bit when I came to a stop but I chock that up to running a heavy oil.

Guide me o great subugurus! New to me 78 DL 4X4
ecky replied to Nubaru's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Welcome, Major rust spots I have noticed would be tops of the front fenders, and around the rear lift gate. (or at least on my '77 and '80) Lifting a first gen is do-able, but more common w/EA 81 second gen cars. You WILL have trouble finding 14" wheels to fit your 4x140 lug pattern unless you have them already. (Check out the wheel page) I paid $175 for my '77 4wd that had been parked for ~5 years. Drove it for three years and grew very fond of the EA71 as it seems to be a little snappier then the EA81 Best o' luck w/ your project. -
Is my Brat a dud???? Need help!!
ecky replied to biffanyus's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Shouldn't be too bad if it is a HG but motors are easy to replace in these little "carucks" if needed. -
I like it for $1000 I think you did ok with you purchase. Welcome and if It has new gaskets and timming belt I'd prolly just run the EA82. Hey, you even have alloys on it.

I like it, I'd almost have to say you can read minds cuz thats about what I have planed for my '80 BRAT.

The only time I talked to her is at a red light. I'd really like to find out if she'd be willing to part with it, but as of now... I haven't a clue.

Thanks for putting the pic on the thread, I couldn't seem to figure it out, so I just put the link.

Cleaned the MAF sensor and checked everything again. No luck. Everything else is fine, and seems normal. I'll just let it go for now. I wannna thank you all for your suggestions, but I've been dealing with it for months now and untill it throws me some codes I guess I'll continue to ignore it. Again thank you and I'm still open to suggestions.

It has factory spark plugs (NGK is all I run) and the air filter is (newer) stock. I don't believe that it has spark plug wires. It looks to me like it has those coil-pack thingies like the SVX's do. I'll spend more time tomarrow and check vac lines and emission valves. I'll clean the MAF with MAF sensor cleaner and see if that helps. I figured the MPG yesterday and it was 19.3. I'll also price an O2 sensor and if reasonable replace it and se if that works. Again thanks guys.

It only runs rough when it is fully warmed up. Anything above idle is smooth hot or cold. It's not throwing any codes and I just double checked and made sure that #1 injector is fireing. When watching the tach, I can see the needle float ever so slightly at idle. All filters ( fuel, oil, air, trans,), spark plugs, belts. (but not the timming belt.) and fluids were changed at 60k. It feels like a miss to me (bounces the whole car). But again no codes, and the idle air control valve has not shut off the #1 injector. If their is anymore info I can give let me know. I'm just getting really annoyed with the bouncing at red lights. And thanks very much for the links.

On 08/08/08 I put myself in debt for the first time. I bought an '05 forester XT with 58,000 miles. It now has about 70,000 miles and is idling ruff. I took it in and had it's 60K done on time hoping it would go away, but it hasn't. On another note, I hear a whining noise coming from the auto trans. when shifted into drive. Just kinda wondering if these are common issues, or something to worry about. We also have an '05 legacy with the auto trans. and I haven't noticed either of these issues with it.

I love 'em. Wish I would have found some like that.

Gen One spotted in Medford
ecky replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I used to live there in white city, I meet a guy named Wes that lived off of highway 140. he had two really nice gen one wagons, both automatics. one was white, and the other was that shinny blue you discribed. I'd bet it to be him. very nice guy -
IF you replace all those parts you will be good untill 120,000 miles (figuring 60K per belt change). or 105000 miles ( i dont know what interval you have). Right now It's at 145,000, and I guess that I should replace the main seal and everything else, but $$$... so I just have to do a little at a time. maybe I'll do that next payday. thank you.
