The outback has developed a rattle at the dash panel. When I push the instrument dash it stops the rattle. I have tried to take the instrument panel out to see what might be causing the rattle but after removing the upper screw it does not want to come forward. I can bend the upper black portion down so I placed some padding there, repaced the screw and that quieted the rattle for a while. But the rattle returns after about a month. Suggestions please. Thank you Monk50 in NC 05 outback llbean 05 outback sedan Waiting for Subaru to bring the diesel to US.

Changed the battery on my 2005 LLBean 3.0 sedan today. With battery out I noticed a filter in the cavity close to the fender. It is a black filter and the portion I could see said oil filter on the canister itself. What is this oil filter ,did not see it in the manual Did not see it in the Haynes manual. How often to change etc an any other information would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Monk50 in NC 05 llbean sedan 05 llbean outback

I lost the safety lug nut socket for my 2005 sub outback. The safety lug set came with the car purchased new and are a Subaru item per the package. It is not an immediate situation unless I have a flat, but I need to remedy the problem for peace of mind and future tire changes! How do I remedy the situation? How do I get the safety lugs off without a socket? Can I purchase a replacement socket? Where? Do I have to purchase an entire set? Thanks for your help in advance for your sage advice and suggestions. Maybe I should change my name from Monk to "lug nut"! Monk50 in NC

I have 2 3.0 Subs. 05 outback sedan and wagon. One with 85 K sedan with 45K miles. True about the wind noise. Inner CV boots went at 82 K on the wagon, weak point as they are located near heat source and dealer replaces the entire axle which is expensive 369 for axle without labor. But if you do the job yourself and replace the boots only around $20 for the parts if you catch the break early. Otherwise the cars have been good serviceable cars with no problems. Live in NC and run regular in both cars without problems. One additional problem is the awkard changing the plugs, very close tolerances with car frame makes changing of the plugs difficult but doable. Question for grossgary, do you have additional information on the tensioner bearing? Ie which bearing, where to acquire said bearings, and how long to change, maybe a discussion of how to change with pics. Not meaning to hijack but hopefully questions that will serve all. Thanks

2005 subaru outback 3.0 82500 miles Just changed oil and noticed one inner cv boot is busted. Searching for wisdom/advice 1. Are requilt half/shafts recommended if so from where and best product for the price. 2. I assume that as one boot is gone the rest on front are likely to follow in short order. Therefore replace all on the front? 3. Considering using subaru bucks to get done at the dealership, any experience in prices. Albemarle NC 4. Would you recommend changing the boots or replace the axles? 5. As I have 2 '05 outbacks I am considering keeping one set to rebuild and have ready for future blowouts, any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Monk in NC

Need help. 1995 2.2 legacy and I am changing the timing belt. To remove the crankshaft pulley I had to use the starter method as the outer ring of the pulley would slip. I held the pulley with a chain wrench but the bolted section would just roate the engine. Once remove the pulley outer ring slides around the bolt section of the pulley. Am I right the pulley should be a solid rotating unit? The outer ring should not be moveable around the bolt section of the pulley? Where is the best place/price to obtain a new pulley? Is it better to go with an under drive unit as the original unit is expensive where I have looked? Any sources for a good used crankshaft pulley? Recommendations are most helpful. Located in Albemarle NC Thanks in advance

2005 outback ll bean bought new, 60K now with no problems at all. Lots of power and torque to climb the NC mountains around Boone. Plugs difficult to change and expensive. Dealer wants around 350 and up to change plugs scheduled at 60K, but with small hands and double universal sparkplug socket able to change and the plugs on line for around $9 each it is not too bad. 2005 subaru outback sedan bought used with 26K on the clock. Now has 27K and no problems. Very impressive auto and with the 05 model 250 HP. As is obvious with two H6's they have satisfied me. monk in NC
