  1. That fender will be a direct replacement for the one you have. The hood on the other hand will only fit if its off of an EA-81 coupe (AKA the earlier looking suby that has the same nose as your brat). And just for future reference you should post anything dealing with your brat in the older gen of subarus forum. This forum is for ancient subys built before 1979
  2. woohoo..alright that awesome. keep us informed of the progress and goodluck!
  3. I want to upgrade my cars front suspension to KYB GR2's (already did this in the rear). How much harder is it to do the fronts? Do i need to get a spring compressor? Will i notice a big difference in handling? This is an 83 suby sedan with probably the original suspension, except for the rear. Thanks guys.
  4. Yeah i was thinking it wasn't helping. Its only a 55amp alt. I guess im going to have to put up a wanted ad for an XT6 alt. This would make the fourth alternator in this car since ive had it. jeez!!!
  5. Its been doing it everytime i start it up recently. Then when its warmed up and have been driving for a few minutes..it goes back up to normal.
  6. If it turns out to be the alternator (again), could my stereo be causing them to fail? I have two ten inch subs in the trunk with a 300 watt RMS amp not to mention a pretty powerful headunit. Any thoughts on this? If it is my stereo killing them should i just get an XT6 90amp alt. Ive heard that they will bolt right up with little to modes other than the pully. thanks.
  7. Theres a small chance that the block side of the waterpump is damaged so that it wont seal correctly. What is more likely since u say that it leaks faster now after u took it off is that you didn't get it to seal perfectly. All traces of the old gasket should be gone on both the block and the pump. I like to use a little bit of brake cleaner and a rage and just run my finger over where the gasket should be. If there is anything really hard on there a bit of steal wool too should do the trick. I did all of this and installed a new water pump on my subaru and have not had a problem with leaks. EDIT: I forgot to mention when you put the new gasket on you should put a bead of black permatex on both sides of the gasket to help it seal up. Hope all this helps and good luck!
  8. If your doing most of the work yourself(which it sounds like) then i would just assume keep it. Im always for the rescue of old neglected subies. The only question is, how much are you willing to spend to get it to run well? It will probably take a few hundred dollars to have the heads worked on(just a guess considering ive never had it done..any support for this guys?) You are going to most certainly have to rebuild the carb and replace all the dryed seals in the engine. Drain the old gas out of the tank, replace the fuel filters, oil change, tranny flush, tune up..you get the picture. It will be a lot of work but fun knowing you saved it. Oh another thing...how rusted is it. If its really...really bad then maybe that would be the reason to not fix it up. Maybe it would just be better for parts to keep another suby on the road. Just a thought
  9. oh good idea..ill check it out next time i go out at night. Thanks!
  10. yes this is the stock gauge on an 83 suby EA-81.
  11. Im really hoping that this is not another problem with my alternator. I was having problems before because of a some hack job on the wires under the hood. I had F&S in Waterbury rewire it back to stock and replace the alternator. Now when i start it up the voltage is low and stays low for awhile and then jumps up to normal. It doesn't affect the way the car runs in the slightest. Im almost leaning towards the gauge being sticky. Wonder if anyone else has had this problem. Ive let it sit for a whole week and the same thing happens. It always starts on the first try so im a bit stumped.
  12. Anyone got a pic of this? I cant even imagine what it looks like cause ive probably never seen onel.
  13. If i had known there was a meet i would have come. Email me next time theres a meet. goldsmobile@yahoo.com.
  14. I just wonder if any of them have made it over to the states in the 20+ years that the've been around. This is one of those things that will keep me up at night. Guess im a subaru nut.
  15. You can pick the gaskets up at a local napa. Thats what i did for my 83. Never ended up using them though. One of my studs just fell out because they had been in and out of the block so many times for exhaust and head work. It was a fairly new gasket and hadn't been leaking all that long so i did the suby thing and taped some new threads and put a bigger bolt in it. No more leak
  16. Its not free but it shouldn't be very expensive. I'm in the Uconn car club so everyone in it is pitching in for a group dyno pull. Im not sure of the exact cost but if it reasonably cheap ill do it. PS. I know what these cars are supposed to make but im still curious what my particular car makes.
  17. Haha too bad your in Montana and I'm in Connecticut.
  18. yeah seriously...now i wish i had money to fly to japan and look for one
  19. AAAWWWW man i want one now. Any idea how many were made? All in Europe i assume or was it strictly for the Japanese market?
  20. The first subaru i owned was an 86 EA-81 hatch. It was 567 marina blue. My current ride is an 83 GL four door. Its 393 Astral Gold.
  21. I just found this pic in an old article on this site. Its in Japanese so is suspect that they never sold over here but just curious. Did they? Cause if so i just added one more car to my "to own" list. Looks a lot like an 83 GLF though. Suppose it wouldn't be to hard to make one Here the link the pic of it: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/projectrudy/sheet8a.jpg
  22. Hey hey you have an 83 with a 5 speed. Nice. Im thinking seriously of converting mine over to 5 speed. Im sick of this stupid auto. How does it feel with stick. Im just curious if it will be night and day in acceleration. Mine feels real sluggish until i hit 2nd. thanks
  23. I have the opportunity to put my 83 subaru gl on the dyno and see what type of power its making. Im guessing that its putting out around 70-80 (its only got 57000 miles on and runs like a top). Would this be something that people on this site would be interested in seeing? Anyone interested in what these things were making when they were close to new (sorta).
  24. I cant remember if my old hatch had a drain plug on the gas tank. Some cars do. If not the easiest way to drain it would probably be disconnecting it from the fuel filter near the passenger side rear tire. it will drain most if not all of the gas.
