  1. LOL i almost fell out of my chair when i saw the baby poop one. Mine came with more hornets nest than i could count...dog hair on everything and a nasty throwup smell that never fully went away...and oh..a leaky rear window. And this was my first car that got me loving subarus...go figure
  2. My old car did the same thing after i hit a deer...what is it with subarus and deer? It turned out that the jolt of hitting the deer dislodged all the crap at the bottom of the fuel tank and sent it into both fuel filters. Replace your fuel filter(s) and see if that helps.
  3. Another thing you might want to do is replace the other fuel filter. It is located right next to the fuel pump in front of the pasenger rear tire. This is commonly overlooked. I would replace that before you replace the fuel pump and see if that helps...that is if you haven't already replaced it.
  4. Wow thats close to mine...I have an 83 GL 4 door front wheel drive with 58,000. Its my daily driver. Runs mint.
  5. Um thanks but if i put a newer tranny in i want to convert to 5 speed stick
  6. What year cars should i look at to find this? Im probably just going to put up a wanted ad on this site but still..i need to know what im asking for..lol.
  7. Im thinking of upgrading my 83 subaru to a 2.5 liter RS motor. Will a stock 5 speed front wheel drive tranny from around the same year as my car hold up under the power? I don't really feel like going through the hassle of turning my car into an all wheel drive.
  8. I have an 83 subaru with the three speed auto and at 4000 rpms and 75 mph for a 4 hour roundtrip trip to massachusetts it got an average of 27 mpg. I don't think thats too bad for a little ol' three speed eh?
  9. You guys think maybe thats why i'm not passing emissions? ughghg Thats almost definitity why your not passing emissions. If your feeling a metal box under the steering wheel...this is your ECU. If you have the ECU then you are supposed to have an O2 sensor. If I were you I would go out and buy the O2 sensor and and bring the car to an exhaust shop and have them drill the hole and hook it all up, or if you have the means drill the hole and hook it up yourself.
  10. Sound to me like your car got a new manifold and someone didn't take the time to drill and tap the hole for the O2 sensor. I have an 83 carbed subaru and its got an O2 sensor so no its not just the fuel injected models. If your car has been running real rich or poorly or both this is the cause or at least a good chunk of it.
  11. Ok thanks. Maybe in the future this car will get a 5 speed swap. I just cant understand why subaru didn't make an overdrive auto for it as well.
  12. I thought that the early 5 speed 2WD's were non overdrive units?
  13. what car would have a 5 speed manual...and what things other than the tranny would i need to grab?
  14. Is it possible to swap in a tranmision from a later model subaru to give me the overdrive in mine. I currently have the 3 speed auto and its a fine transmision until i get on the highway. This is a 2WD car. I don't like the high rpm (even though at 75 mph and at 4000 rpms i was getting 27 mpg). I would like one extra gear. Is this a somewhat easy swap and what car would i look into for such a transmision? Not sure if i would want to convert to manual or not but I'll cross that when i come to it. thanks!
  15. If your engine really had 0 oil pressure at idle you would have a ruined engine. IF i had to guess there is something wrong with your gauge. Ask the mechanic to put a manual gauge on the engine as this will be far more accurate.
  16. Sorry should have been more specific. Its an 84 or older four door. Its an automatic 4WD. Its located in Connecticut.
  17. Anyone interested in a four door 4WD suby from the early 80's. Not sure what year it is. I just found it at a garage that is going to do work on my car. The car has about 70,000 miles on it and a sunroof. Its black with a grey interior and its got rust. Possible parts car or restore? If anyone is interested I'll investigate a bit or you could do your own investigation. You can PM me or email me at goldsmobile@yahoo.com for the phone number to call. Im not sure if its for sale or not but it sounds to me like it could be. I just cant stand to see an old suby sitting and rotting.
  18. I just checked my Haynes repair manual and it said coolant temp sensor. This is the sensor that is near the thermostat on hitachi cars and sends the signal to your gauge. I had the same number come up on my car awhile back. Replace the sensor and your ECS light should go off.
  19. My book was not very specific...it said earlier models will have an external VR. If it is inside the alternator that would make the most sense considering its giving me a lot of trouble right now. Thanks
  20. Where is the voltage regulator located on an 83 subaru? I believe mine is going bad or is bad because sometimes my amps just keep going up when i give the car more gas. I know it is located outside of the alternator but the book doesn't say where.
  21. Im quickly coming to the conclusion that everyone on this site is telling me..i need a new alternator. Its starting to do even more weird things...like today when i got the revs high the amps would go into the red zone. Then it stopped doing that. The wiring is still kinda fishy to me. I think I'm going to rewire the car back to factory, with a new alternator that works. Anyone know where the best place to buy a good alternator is? I worked at napa for awhile and have heard horror stories about their alternators and starters. This does not mean that i wont try one but I'm just saying.
  22. I think I may have just solved my problem (im going to cross my fingers for the next few days that it doesn't happen again). As i said someone cut up the factory wiring and did a pretty neat job of redoing it but at the battery there was a bad connection to the positive terminal. I have since fixed it and the lights have not come on all day. Lets see what the rest of the week brings though.
  23. Thanks for all the advise but this is a brand new alternator...and battery. Someone however did screw around with the factory wiring at the back of the alternator and i wonder if this is the problem? I checked the wiring and it seems fine but i assume that factory is best. So on that note...anyone got an alternator wiring harness that hasn't been all cut up? lol
  24. My 83 subaru just started doing this more frequently. Sometimes when i go to start it the idiot lights for low amps, brake fluid, stop lamps, and parking brake come on but only half way. They are not on bright but enough for me to see them. It only happens sometimes though. Would anyone know what could be the cause of this? As i said is as though someone turned on a dimmer switch for them...cause if i pull the parking brake the light will come on full...not halfway.
  25. sounds real good to me. About two weeks ago i had my shop replace my rear main seal because it was leaking all over the place. Taking down the tranny and everything else involved cost me 700 dollars...but its good to know that your car doesn't leave big puddles where ever it goes :-)
