OK where's the damn O2 sensor in my 84 OHV 1800?!?
hatchsub replied to markjs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I believe that the O2 sensor should be on the top of the first cat...hold on ill go out and double check on my car. If its not there that could be your problem. I would look for wiring around that area that just ends. It could be that some dumb a$$ in the past just put on an aftermarket cat that didn't have the O2 sensor mount. As for your coolant fan not coming on it is almost always the fan switch. This is a mercury filled switch that is mounted on the pasenger side of the radiator about halfway down. When goes bad the fan fails to turn on. Since you already told me that the fan motor itself is working, I can say with reasonable certainty that the switch is your problem. Hold on though im going out to double check on that O2 sensor. A few minutes later...Yep its on the top of the cat closest to the engine...or at least it's supposed to be :-) -
What does the "ECS" light mean?
hatchsub replied to markjs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Its not. The ECU( the box that will blink the codes for you) is located behind the trim panel that is under the steering wheel. Just take out the three screws that hold it in at the front and pull it out of the way. The ECU will be right in front of you after that. -
that'd be great...thanks

How much does he want for that second intake and carb setup? Could you get a phone number?
-
How rare would it be to find a true EA-81 dual carb intake from a JDM RX? That sounds like a cool bolt on for more power. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that since i haven't seen or heard of them before they're kinda rare and expensive if found.

Over high oil pressure and leaking oil pump....
hatchsub replied to markjs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah thats a bit more than mine runs but it should be fine. I have an EA-81 that runs about 55-60 psi at around 2000rpms and up. Mine leaked from everywhere...valvecovers, oil pan, rearmain seal, and oil pump. I replaced all the gaskets and am now leak free. Just go ahead and replace the gaskets or let it leak and just monitor how much oil you have. Better to have a lot of oil pressure than too little with these engines. -
the tire place said that they had fiddled around with it cause it seemed loose. They looked for it but couldn't find it so i assume that it fell off on the way home. I retraced my route three or four times with no luck. Maybe if it was a hubcap i would find it but a centercap is kinda small to see on the side of the road. so again if anyone knows where i could find one that would be great. If i cant find the center cap at all...would anyone know where i could get another set of vintage subaru alloys. I really like the four spoke design from 84. thanks

sonofa...pioneer stereo too big!
hatchsub replied to loyalewithcheese's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
when i installed a new stereo in my 83 i ran into that same problem. I solved it by moving the stereo down to where the small package tray/storage area was and moving the storage area up to where the stock radio was. heres a pic of my dash to show you what i mean -
Hello everyone, Yesterday i went into town fair tire to get my wheels balanced and rotated. When i got home i realized that i was one center cap short. It had fallen off on the way home! I have an 83 subaru that currently has 82 LX alloy wheels on it. Could anyone please help me locate a center cap? If worst comes to worst I'll buy the entire wheel. Here is a picture of what my wheels look like. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/wheels2/4spokemag.jpg Thanks Steve

Im thinking about upgrading my shocks in the rear and maybe the fronts later. Is there any good aftermarket shocks that will improve my cushy handling? I have an 83 subaru gl sedan with the 1.8 liter EA-81. Thanks.

How should i go about wiring all the emmisions stuff to the weber or is that out of the question? I notice how much emmisions hosing is relying on the stock air cleaner assembly. I would like to keep my car emmisions legal seeing as how i drive it everyday but would also like some more power. Going from a carter one barrel to a weber 2 barrel, I should see some increase in power.

convert to weber from a carter one barrel?
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sorry everyone. Im still new to this message board. I just found that this question has been asked before and answered. Thanks anyways! -
Hi everyone, I want to do the weber conversion but just realized the other day while taking a hard look at my engine that my carb is the carter one barrel. All the websites selling the conversion kit say that it is for the hitatchi 2 barrel. Am i assuming correctly that the intake manifold is different on a carter equipted subaru? If so could i swap intake manifolds from a subaru that had a hitachi 2 barrel so that this conversion would be possible?

Hi everyone, I have an 83 subaru with a ea 81. I would like to do the conversion from stock subaru carb to the weber 32/36 DGEV carb. Problem is all the suppliers are out. When i say suppliers i mean webers direct and Redline carbs. Does anyone out there know of a store or place that might still have this conversion kit sitting on there shelves? I really want some more power and to get rid of this stupid subaru hessitation. This is my second subaru with the same prob. Only diff is that this one has 55,000 miles compared to the 120.000 that were on my old one. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

whether i should get a weber or not <<UPDATE>>
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for all your input guys. Ive decided to go ahead and buy it this summer. I need more power!! -
Does anyone know if putting a new Accel superstock (or super coil not sure which) would make a difference in the performance of my 83 EA-81. It has the orginal coil i believe.

Another thought that just came to my mind could be the TPS (throttle possitioning sensor). It could have been knocked out of alignment or could have gone bad. Get a shop to check this out for you on one of their diagnostic computers.

If it hessitated when you put your foot on the gas i would have told you it might have been the injectors. but this isn't the case. I am going to side with snowman and try the IAC valve. These things get junked up over time. I replaced the one on my camaro (i know i know) and it idled a lot better. Hope this helps. And again if it doesn't you didn't spend too much. The IAC valve should cost no more than 30 bucks at an auto parts store.
-
Is it a smooth idle? When you hit the gas does it hessitate? This one has fuel injection right?
-
Something simple that u can do that may or may not fix it is to replace the fuel filter(s). It is a simple and easy thing to do and at the least will make your car run smoother if they haven't been replaced for awhile.

What to do with this 82 GL?
hatchsub replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If its got the options u want i would keep it. If it doesn't then i would buy it, fix it and sell it on ebay. You could get a good amount of money for it. I sold my old 86 gl hatchback on ebay and it was real rusty and i still got a grand for it -
Hey the ECS light on my 83 subaru gl comes on after about 10 minutes of driving. It does not affect anything but its annoying. I read out the code that the computer said and it was 24 if my memory serves me right. I looked it up in my manual and it said it was a duty solenoid. Does anyone know what the hell that is. My subaru dealership was baffled and had no idea.

I've heard a lot of good about the weber carbs but i want to ask your opinion. Im thinking about putting one on my EA-81. Will it make a big difference in the way the car accelerate? Will it cure my cold engine hessitation? Is it clear how to hook up all those damn hoses under the hood to the new carb?

Im new to the USMB but have an old school suby. Its an 83 with 54000 on the clock. My problem with it right now is that it leaks oil right onto the cat and its burning off in big clouds of blue when i stop. My shop said its the rear main seal. Does this require pulling the engine like i think it does. Could they have been mistaken and could it really be my oil pan. I had an 86 that leaked a lot from the pan so thats why im asking. Thanks for any help u can give.
