83 Coupe Love ..Restore Progress ( Pics page 2)
hatchsub replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
10k is a ton of money! What all are they doing for that price? I know that bodywork and paint are in there but what else does the coupe really need? If it just needs body work and paint you can get that done for less than half of that. There is a guy locally (who i should have gone to again) who does show quality paint and body work. He is not cheap either but to put it in perspective he did my entire last camaro for 4k. A subaru is a lot smaller than a camaro. If you were to bring it to him stripped of parts that are in the way (trim, bumpers, lights etc) you would save even more money. BTW the place is called lanes auto body in guilford ct. -
Im pretty sure that my PCV system is responsible for my blue smoke sometimes. I have a weber carb and therefore have my pcv set up like this; Both valve covers are connected by a hose. There is a t-fitting that goes down to the pcv. Off of that line there is another T-fitting that shoots up to the weber air cleaner. Would it do any harm and would it help if i just put mini breathers on both valve covers and left the PCV going straight up to the air cleaner?

1984 subaru brat, is this a good deal?

PB-blaster is better than WD40 by far. -
Hmm is this in the design of the console or whats behind it? I cant remember what the difference was other than the 2wd was one big piece and the 4wd was split (shifter section and then radio section). I might have also wanted to note that to do this i had to get a stereo that was not terribly deep. And even then i have virtually no room between the heater vents behind the console and the back of the stereo.

Blown out axle...options? Empi?
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tranny mounts and engine mounts. I have engine mounts coming in the mail from backwoodboy and tranny mounts coming from rockauto. Im just being really easy on it in first and second so that i dont stress the new axles by having the motor and tranny move around a lot. They are no where near dangerous to drive on just less than ideal for me. -

GOT IT. Pulled the hub off with the four 14 mm nuts and pulled it through with the axle nut. Then we put the hub back on and pulled it through the rest of the way. -
If you dont mind doing a bit of fabing you can make an aftermarket stereo look like it was meant for that dash and center console. For the radio, to get the clearance on the back you will need to move the location down to where that small package tray is and move the package tray to the top where the radio once was. This will take some measuring and cutting and filing to get a nice tight fit for both. For front speakers, plate speakers work best. I have infinity kappas but others have reference (basically the same thing). These are both 4x6 speakers mounted in the stock locations. The passenger side speaker requires no mods to fit. The drivers sid you will need to remove that small 4x3 (or whatever ridiculous size it is) speaker out. You will see it it is held in with a bracket. Remove the speaker itself from the bracket and cut the bracket in half so that there is a top piece and a bottom piece so you can put it back in. Bolt the pieces of the bracket to your plate speaker and stuff it back in there. You may have to play around with getting it to fit right and line up but its really not that bad. I have pictures of all of this on my cardomain page but for some reason cardomain is down so those will have to wait. Also, those aftermarket mounting kits for these cars look terrible if you ask me. Ive had one and much prefer just having it mount in the dash like it was meant to be there.

Blown out axle...options? Empi?

Well got the rebuilt axles back. One went into the knuckle like butter but the other one...not so much. We mic'd both axles right where it changes from splines to bearing races (where it keeps getting hung up) and found the one that is giving me trouble to be 1-2 thousands too big. I would not think it would cause that big of a problem but it is. So out comes a file i guess. -

Did i mention that i love these cars. Joe (roommate) and i removed both axles and both strut assemblies in 45 minutes. We pulled the struts because im going to cut the springs a bit to get the car to sit better. It has the same ea81t springs on both sides but for some reason the drivers side sits better than the passenger side and yes both springs are fully seated in the perches. The only thing i can think is that i over compressed the driver spring making them unequal. Off to waterbury tomorrow to get them rebuilt and back in the car. Engine and tranny mounts to follow. -

Ok we just got in from checking everything out. Tranny mounts..shot, motor mounts..on their way out or shot. There was a good amount of play side to side if i grabbed onto the alternator and pulled and pushed the motor around. I would say about 1/2" to an 1" of play. No good. So looks like im doing those as well. I already found the tranny mounts on rockauto for 10 bucks a pop. The engine mounts however could be harder to find. Anyone got a place to get them cheap? Oh and the control arm bushings looked pretty good actually. Remember john...87k lol. -

I gotta check my motor mounts and get back to you. Im wondering if they are shot and making me go through axles. -

yea im not so sure my engine and tranny mounts are up to par. I might have to go in and check them. Tranny mounts im more worried about than engine mounts. -

Heard back. I have two options and already chose. New EMPI axles are 128 a piece which isnt too terrible i guess. But he also rebuilds axles with all new parts from EMPI. So....im going to have him rebuild them in house. Hes been doing it for years so i trust that they will be good not to mention cant beat the limited lifetime warranty (aka free rebuilds if the boots are not cracked). Best of all its only 96 bucks a piece. So i save 60 bucks about. -

I remember reading awhile ago that EMPI axles were good. I actually found a dealer in ct for EMPI axles so now im just waiting to hear back to find out how much they will be for the pair. I have GCKs in it now and they are supposed to be good too . Btw does 23 splines inner and 30 outer sound right? Just making sure before i buy em and then realize they are wrong. -
Ok coming home from school today i blew out an axle just going over a speed bump nice and easy. Im wondering what my options are. I just called the local napa and they said they cant get the empi axles. They carry AME (i think?) axle that are brand new for 128 bucks a pop. I looked at the other one i have and it also is not looking so hot. Its spewing grease EVERYWHERE. So basically the way i see it i need two new axles and possibly motor and tranny mounts. I was hoping to not have to do this but now my car shakes so bad its not drivable as far as im concerned.

Blue smoke from my exhaust
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I might just do that to get it by for awhile but thats a bandaid fix so i will get in there and redo the valve seals at somepoint when i get some time (who knows when that will be). Im also thinking of doing a cam in it. I might do it all at once. Gotta talk to delta cams this summer and find out what their turnaround time is with cam regrinding.
