  1. Only question i would have is why go from 4wd to 2wd? If you want one extra gear i believe its possible to convert to a Dual range 5 speed (not sure on this though since yours is a gen 1).
  2. That looks about normal to me give or take a bit. Not sure whats out of the ordinary. Both of my EA81s have run at the halfway mark or a bit below. Not saying you dont need a new pump because if there is any play then its time. Im just saying your temperature isnt that far off from what it should be.
  3. How bad is the rust? Is it through? In this case a picture would help but the two ways i have i can just tell you 1. Easy way. Sand it down to bare metal and POR15 it. Rust preventative paint that is really good. Let that dry overnight and re-install the gasket. Done 2. If its bad cut the metal out and have someone or yourself weld in some new metal. Prime and paint. Those are the only real ways i know of dealing with rust.
  4. I dont remember what you said to this cause its buried like 20 pages ago but why not get a nice set of Gold Enkeis and put some white letter tires on them and plop them on? They would fill up the wheel wells nice and would look great on a white car (kinda like a 70s STI). If thats not your style then the above picture is cool. I agree with above, im not so sure about the whitewall tires. Thats more of a 40s and 50s american barge look if you ask me.
  5. Nice Brian. I dont think youll be disappointed with your decision. BTW i now work at a bike shop so if anyone has bike questions answered i might be able to help you out. (ive been working on and restoring bikes since i was around 12).
  6. What was your first clue The Location: Connecticut thing in my posts?
  7. Get a stock air box and cut it to fit the weber. Most techs dont know the difference. As long as everything else with the car is in order, and you lean it out a bit before inspection it should pass.
  8. It might be between the coolant part of the intake and the air part of the intake around the gaskets..that way you wouldnt know if its leaking unless you pulled the manifold. Spraying might not show you anything if this is the case since its that little strip of gasket that divides the air intake with the coolant section.
  9. OH WOW. That will be one sick motor in that Brat. Your going to run the 4 weber single barrel carbs the VW people run i assume? You'll be poping your hood having people do a double take.
  10. I dont suppose there is enough space back there for a rear seat now is there? That would be sick.
  11. He says parts or a little work. Its not in as nice shape as the other one im assuming but it too has great parts. I would go look at it and see if it needs new drivetrain components. If so chainrings arnt too bad and neither is a new chain and cassette. For 300 less though u might end up spending that 300 to get it to the point of riding reliably. Just food for thought.
  12. I should specify a bit better. When i say wear on the frame and wheels i mean: Are there any cracks in the frame where the tubes are welded together? Are there any dents? For wheels look to see that they are true. If they are a bit off its to be expected since its a mountain bike. From the sound of it though i dont think you'll find these things on it. good all around bike at a good price. Said Shimano XT components. XTR was the top of the line followed by XT. XT is a bit stronger than XTR though since they lightened the XTR up for full race bikes.
  13. That was easily a 2000+ dollar bike new. Sounds like a good deal. Are you going to be able to look at it? If so just check it for wear mainly on the frame and wheels. The drivetrain is inexpensive compared to those items. The shocks are both good brands. Its a solid bike for 800 bucks.
  14. Wow thats the first ive seen of that. Where did the rummor start that 2wd distributors have a better advance curve than 4wd then?
  15. You are probably right in assuming the combo of Hitatchi and Nippo-Denso killed something. The stock components do not like to be mixed and matched. I had a Accel superstock coil on my car for over a year and it then it died. So i put in the stock coil again and ran it that way for awhile but the stress of having had the Accel in there took out the ignitor in the distributor. To answer your question, when the ignitor goes it gives no warning, just as if the coil dies. If you know you are not getting any spark out of the coil i would replace that in the hopes that the distributor is fine. If that doesnt solve it, then replace the distributor. Nippo-densos have a better advance curve (2wd subys) so its an upgrade of sorts over the hitachi distibutors.

  17. Just did a quick amount of research for you Heres and 03 Baja And heres an 03 Outback Bumpers are not identical looking. They may mount the same though so if that little fact doesnt bother you i would try one.
  18. Not sure if an outback bumper would be the same but have u checked Junkyards around your area? Might be a good idea to save a few bucks.
  19. Carbon built up in the combustion chamber will effectively raise compression. That cylinder might just be really gummed up.
  20. yea good luck with headgaskets. Is your car SPFI? When and if u swap in the EA81 just drop your SPFI intake as well as a modded EA82 distributor (maybe there is more?) and go. SPFI EA81. Best of both worlds.
  21. Oh dont worry you and Jon will be getting pictures when i get a chance to finish the painting. I have paint on it now it just needs a bit of work to be up to my level. And im spending the weekend chasing an exhaust leak on my camaro. (PLEASE dont be the header).
  22. Haha probably 5 or 6 of those views are me just looking over the rust that WAS on my car. When i get around to finalizing the paint ill send you the pics Jon and let you post them since im computer stupid. Thanks again for the help. The suby looks good again.
  23. Can someone explain to me the difference between a Legacy GT and a Legacy SpecB? I tried to find the differences online but didnt get anywhere. From what i can tell, the SpecB is more WRXy in the interior but no real power or handling differences from the Legacy GT. Is that right or did i miss something.
  24. Yea I'd bet money your tranny is toast. You can drive around for awhile without 3rd. I would start looking for a new tranny though. As said ^ they can be had for under 100. I payed 56 for mine from Harry's U pull-it in PA. Low miles on it too. But i got super lucky with that one.
