Well guys ive been dealing with this hessitation/bucking problem for awhile and finally got fed up and called the guy i bought it from; Bigjim. He's a great guy and I told him that the car was hessitating like it was running out of fuel at 1500rpm's and it wasnt very smooth after that either unless i reved it quick to get by that spot. Well his feeling on it was my idle jet was too small so i told him that i had a #50 idle jet so he sent me a 55 and a 60. I tried the 55 first and it helped a bit but not entirely. So i tried the 60 and what that did was move my hessitation up from 1500 to 2500rpm's. My question is this..Does this mean that my idle jetting was fine and that i need to be concentrate on the primary jetting? My reasoning is that now im getting more fuel down low so it moved my hessitation up the rpm range. Im not even sure what jetting i would need to get to solve my problem. Im just running the jetting that came in the kit for the EA81.

Case of te EA82t drinking coolant?
hatchsub replied to milestoempty's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Head gasket for sure. If its drinking that much coolant then its the head gasket. Its not uncommon for the gasket to blow in an area that will not contaminate the oil but will burn off the coolant. Someone who has actually owned an EA82 will chim in here soon im sure. -
In both of the IROCs that ive had i have had to replace the computers. I guess its just getting to that time when the computer needs replacing. Do a slap test ..as in hit the computer with your hand while the car is running an see if it affects the idle. This is a speed density car right? Or did the corvette keep the MAF sensor and only the camaro go to speed density? If so could the map ( i think thats the right sensor) be causeing this problem?

EA81 catalytic converter toasted!
hatchsub replied to RedRat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Does it still need to pass emissions out in Washington? I will say the non-environmentally friendly thing and that is..get someone to weld a straight pipe in there on the cheap. I had both my Catalitics (yep two cause it was a california emissions model) taken out and a straight pipe welded in. Didnt really notice all that much difference in performance but the SOUND!!!! Quiet at idle and up to about 2000 rpms and then it sounds as good (to me at least) as a new subaru wrx. -
Documented: The 1970 FF-1 Project car...
hatchsub replied to Kostamojen's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
How about a set of the 1974 sport mags? I bet they would look awesome on that car and you wouldnt have to cut the wheel wells. There is a picture of them on the wheel page if you cant picture what they look like. For some reason this school computer that im on wont let me post the link. -
Tranny fix vs. Tranny swap.
hatchsub replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Def do a swap. Trannys are very complicated things to tackle and if dont correctly by a shop are quit expensive. If you have metal flakes coming out in the tranny oil that baby is toast. Go get a jy tranny and swap it in or convert the car to 5 speed . Lots more fun. -
Carburetor Interchangeability
hatchsub replied to Crabman's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Someone else around this board should know the answer to that. Unfortunatly i do not. If i were to take a guess i would say they would be different. Your feeding .2 L less motor. It wouldnt make sense in my mind for them to have the same exact jetting. -
Carburetor Interchangeability
hatchsub replied to Crabman's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Well i can tell you for sure that it will bolt on and everything will hook up fine. Its just a matter of...do they have different jets for the smaller motor? Auto versus manual shouldnt make a difference. If the jetting is the same then its a direct bolt on but if the jets are different..then hell i would pull the jets out of your old carb and put them in the new one. -
Find out where all that smoke is coming from and chances are you found your problem if not most of your problem.

Is it me or is there no cap on the oil fill tub? Wonder how long that engine has been open to the elements. I cant wait to see the progress on this car though. I love that everyone who could helped out and is coming through to save on of the few remaining ff-1s. -
How about chevy vegas? I remember them making the top ten worst cars by click and clack. They rusted out in a hurry but other than that i didnt think they were that bad. The gremlin also made that same list because of how slow it was. I guess the guy who wrote in and voted it a worst car never drove a 304 V8 gremlin. I bet those things were screamers. Ive always wanted one since i found out u could get a V8 in such a small car. This Thread has def gone off topic at this point so im sure it will be getting moved soon.

Who'd be interested in buying a copy of this?
hatchsub replied to moosens's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
kamei had a different design for the Gen 2 (EA81) cars. Carfreak85 has one as well as a handfull of other members on this board. Id like to get my hands on one of those and bolt it to the front of my sedan. -
what do those rims look like? I cant even picture the 6 spoke aluminum mags. To the wheel page i go!

YUGO!!!!! or the LeCar. They are both up there.

Anyone done a turbo to non turbo swap?

My 89 DL coupe ((with pics))
hatchsub replied to SubaruWagon87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats cause its a DL instead of a GL. They are not as common. As far as the tranny swap goes..if you want less headaches and better gas milage then go for the 2wd 5 speed swap. Its not all that bad as i did it in my EA81 sedan. I wrote up an article as well detailing how to do it. Its in the USRM. -
glowing dash indicator lights
hatchsub replied to ivantruckman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds like your alternator is on its way out. Dim dash warning lights is usually a symptom of that -

hatchsub replied to LuvScooby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I may be completly off but doesnt the turbo motor have lower compression than an N/A motor? So if you were to take the turbo off you would be left with a complete dog of a motor..unless you swapped in N/A pistons then you would just have an N/A motor. -
my vote..topper off. Brats look awesome without the toppers.
-
Well how about this..even in the instance they dont fit im sure you can get most if not all your money back by selling them on this board .

Is the antenna bent? If thats the only reason your replacing it then just unscrew the antena (should be an 8mm wrench) and screw a new one on to the stud. Im not sure if you talking about replacing everything. I think you can get away with just pulling the inner fender (the plastic wheel well in other words) and getting access like that. Good luck.

Thinking about buying a 94 4wd Loyale wagon
hatchsub replied to Infinitrium's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As a winter beater it would be a hell of a lot better in the snow than the Jetta. -
All stickered up...
hatchsub replied to REXSPEEDWORTHY's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Looks like you got some rust coming in in your wheel wells and the bottom of the doors. Careful not to let it get too far or else its harder to fix it. But other than that it looks awesome. Love it -
found another EA81 sedan...77000 miles..what to do
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yea i was thinking that as well. My moms car isnt all that great in the snow so i wonder if she would drive this one to work instead when its snowy out. -

Well from the sound of it, it cant be any worse than your 94 jetta. Im not a fan of those things. More problems than they are worth. Id see if you could get him down to 400 so that its as if you traded your Jetta for the loyale. That way your out nothing..until you start working on the Loyale.
