EA82T EXPERTS HELP:Best method ?
hatchsub replied to mykingcrab's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
vacuum leaks are best found with a can of carb cleaner or brake cleaner fitted with a little spray tube and just spray around potential targets..Intake gaskets, throttle body, and vacuum lines that look suspisious. If your idle picks up u found a leak. -
coil problems..whats going on?!?!?!
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check to see if voltage is getting to both sides of the coil using a voltmeter and with the ignition switch set to the RUN position. If you have voltage getting to both sides of the coil then it is ok and something else is causing the trouble. Once you get the car running then check the voltage at the battery with the engine running at around 2,000 RPM. If the voltage exceeds more than 15.25 volts the voltage regulator in the alternator is bad and you need to replace the alternator.
Ok thanks for the replys..both of you. Ill look into it when i get a chance. Im pretty sure that when i check the coil it will show that voltage is not reaching one side cause this same problem just happened a week ago and the solution was the original coil. I will check the battery too once i get it up and running. -
wasnt there a thread about a year back talking about follow ups? I agree more people need to follow up.

Ok on the way to Carlisle this summer i blew out the accel superstock coil that was in my car. In the process it blew one of my fuses (i changed out all my fusable links for fuses for ease of diagnosing). Anyways i replaced the accel with the stock coil again and proceeded to drive almost 1000 miles on the original coil when just today it died again. It will crank but its obviously the coil cause the tach does not move when its cranking. What would cause two coils to burn out in the span of a week? Here are the mods to the car if it helps... Weber carb (car is mostly de-emissioned) 5 speed swap XT6 alt swap I dont suppose the higher output of the alt could cause it to go could it? The gauge stays right at 15 amps which is a bit higher than i would like but i dont nessisarily trust it either. It never goes higher than that though so i figured it was just fine. Im getting really frustrated with this car right now. I used to trust it alot and now i dont. Its let me down alot this year with its starter issues and fusable link problems and now this coil problem.

your not going to have any top end improvement over the hitachi. at least not much. Its in the low end that your going to feel it.

Starter problems UPDATE..STILL PROBS
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
so im assuming that a push button would involve a wire from the battery to the button then a wire from the button to the spade connector on the starter? Also if i understand do i keep the current wire on the starter as well so that it wont start unless i turn the ignition key AND push the start button? Or would the better thing be to wire a wire from the positive tab on the starter since its got 4 gauge wire off the battery..then wire that into the button and back to the spade. -
could it be that the #3 fuel injector is a bit clogged making it run a bit lean in that cylinder? Just a tought cause i cant think of what else it would be.

Nah its just because in New England we use salt on the roads that eats away at the cheap recycled metal that these 80s relecs are made of.

HAHAHA yea its night and day. The auto in it sucked. It has no problem burying the speedo now..if it starts.

There arnt really and 4wd cars up here either. Subarus of our vintage are a rare sight this far north...running or not.

Starter problems UPDATE..STILL PROBS
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well update on the situation..the positive cable was old so i replaced it and the problem is still persisting. Im pretty sure its not the starter cause i put a rebuilt starter in when it was still the old cable and the rebuilt didnt work either. So.....i think my ignition switch is messed up. -

Good or bad - Nippon or Hitach distys
hatchsub replied to suby85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I dont see how the color of it would make a difference. Arnt they the same coil just different color. Even though mine was a chrome/silver one i still wouldnt put any accel superstock in my car again. -

Do not waste your money on that hunk of garbage. I just had one of them go bad on me this weekend. All of a sudden my car died without warning on the highway. Tried to start it and it would crank but the tach wouldnt move. I put the original coil back in and all was well. I would say stick with factory coil as these engines really dont put out enough power to warrent getting an aftermarket coil. I never noticed a difference. If you really must have an aftermarket coil go with a MSD. Ive heard nothing bad about there coils but have heard tones bad about accel. Do a search on this board for Accel coils and you will see the horror stories that other board members have told. I just added to it. -
weber throttle linkage binding up
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just letting everyone know i was dumb and overtightened the linkage. Its fine now. -
weber carb on..now car bucks
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Im pretty sure i have the mixture set perfect. Sometimes the throttle doesnt return to idle just because there is not enough force in the return spring to spring the cable back. I have run out of time to figure it out and i will just deal with it for now until Carlisle where maybe i can get some other opinions on the mater . Thanks Connie. Ill cya either tonight or tomorrow..we still havent made up our minds. -
Um how about if i finish driving my car and come to a stop and see coolant coming out the overflow? The car doesnt overheat but does that sometimes. Time for a new cap?
-

Connie if you want to PM me you # I'll give you a call to let you know when we're leaving. If you dont hear from me by 5 on friday its going to be saturday.

Who'd be interested in buying a copy of this?
hatchsub replied to moosens's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
yea i thought those were for the 82-84 style EA81s as well. If it turns out to be for one of them and you have no use for it ill take it off your hands -
Hey i just went to swap brackets (the hitachi one onto the weber) and now my weber is binding up a bit. I realize that it cant be too tight but i dont think it is and it wasnt binding before. I also realize that there needs to be a few spacers thrown in as well. But it still binds but only if i open it all the way up. What gives?
