  1. 1983 EA81 sedan Resealed engine so no leaks anywhere at hot idle it will be around 20-25psi at highway speeds (3000rpms) it will be around 50-60psi (not sure without looking at the gauge right now)
  2. Well i just had a brain fart and remembered that the negative had been replaced about 2 years ago when i had problems like this..except i didnt even get a click..just nothing. So ill go check the positive. If i remember it looked pretty old. But doesnt the positive have a crapload of other wires on it? Its not just one cable is it? Oh well i gotta get to bed.
  3. Would the battery cables really cause that kind of problem where hitting the starter i can get it to start again? If so yea ill go check them when i get a chance. Thanks for all the help guys.
  4. Hey everyone. My 83 sedan is acting up. It was giving me a bit of problems with the starter before i did an auto to manual swap on it but i didnt really pay attention. Opps. Well when i finished the swap i put the original starter back in and it started to act up on me again. It would just give me one click then nothing. If i bang on it with a hammer it starts though. So my mechanic told me the contacts go bad in them and i should replace them. Sure enough when i open it the contacts are worn down. So i replace them only to have it happen again. So i pull the starter again figuring that i messed up the contacts somehow and didnt line them up. They were a bit off (as in one side was higher than the other) so i fixed that and put it back together. This happened to me two more times before i gave up on this starter and put the manual starter in that i had snagged from the Junkyard. I replaced one of the contacts in it cause it was worn down pretty far and when i went to fire the car up it started faster and easier than it had with the auto starter. So i figured the problem was solved. Well tonight it did it again to me. Is there something im missing here. Or did i just get two crappy starters? Is some wiring the cause of this problem since i went from auto to manual?
  5. yea if its running good it should get mid 20's on the highway.a bit better if you drive like grandma.
  6. yeah Connecticut sucks for road salt. My 83 needs to get some rust work done. It was starting to rot in front of the rear wheel and i dont have time or money to fixe it right so i cut out what i could and POR 15'd it. Its holding well i would say and should get me through till spring or summer when i have the funds to throw at it again.
  7. anyone? 250 cfm sounds about right. Do you think it would be do-able as its going to be cheaper than a weber new.
  8. Ok everyone. I drained out the redline and put in just standard old Valvoline 75w90 non-synthetic. It still is hard to get into 2nd when cold but when warm it shifts a lot better. I think this is as good as it gets at least until its warmer than 29 out :-\
  9. Yeah i found the 6 pack setup http://www.barrygrant.com/news/articles/products/product_004.aspx It seems that they only offer that carb with that 6 pack manifold but that seems odd. I bet if someone really wanted just the center carb with electric choke it could be had. 250 CFM sounds about right for our sooby engines. Only thing i wonder is if that is any bigger than a stock hitachi. Anyone know?
  10. Anyone know what the CFM on the weber 32/36 is for comparison?
  11. Since that motor is either an EA81 or EA71 i would say dont bother with headgaskets. Its the EA82's that are known for headgasket issues. If its not leaking now chances are it wont. My advice is when you have it out to replace all the gaskets (valve cover, oil pan, oil pump, rear main). If i missed any someone else can chim in. Also you may want to replace the oil pump if its the original. If the water pump feels like there is play in the shaft replace that too.
  12. There are just some unknowns with it. It will need a custom spacer to bolt to our manifolds as well as a custom mount for the throttle cable as the linkage will most likely be in the front.
  13. Hey i was just curious if anyone has tried to make one of these carbs work on a subaru. They are really great carbs from what ive heard. http://www.barrygrant.com/demon/default.aspx?page=5a
  14. heres the only pic ive ever seen of one. It supposedly from finland. Looks really goofy if you ask me. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/brats/miscphotos/90-finland-longbed1.jpg
  15. +1 no sealer. I installed mine dry and took my time making sure both mating surfaces were clean and flat. No leaks yet!!
  16. Mine isnt all that different. Its a standard DIN sized headunit. Here is the closest thing i could find to it. Its basically an undated version of mine. http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product.asp?product=19769
  17. feel over the radiator with you hand when youve just been running the car. You should not feel any cold spots or colder spots than others. If so you need a new radiator.
  18. These engines also rely on backpressure. If you got a tone of leaks and its very loud im sure thats not helping matters. Im not saying this is your whole problem but its probably contributing to it.
  19. Well if you do end up changing the color plum crazy is a cool retro color that will grab attention. But my 2 cents are that that cosmic blue looks nice on it.
  20. Oh your right. I looked at it too quick. I thought i saw the one big circular light that replaced the quad lights from the 70 model. Yeah i change my vote to 68-69 skylark.
  21. Is there any low viscosity manual tranny fluid..say similar in viscosity to auto fluid? Also what do you think my chances are of getting my money back on this redline crap. My tranny shifts like crap again and this stuff is expensive. It shifted great with 1.89 Napa auto tranny fluid.
  22. ok well all you really have to do is cut the hole to fit the stereo and put it in there. You will have to fab up a bracket to support the back of the stereo. Also you have to make sure the unit isnt too deep. Ive heard from other board members that have tried this that it didnt work like it did for me because of not enough room. If you plan on using the aux inputs make sure they are on a wire instead of just on the back of the unit as when you plug in the RCA cables they dont interfer with it fitting.
