The Awesome Older Generation Picture Thread
hatchsub replied to 6 Star's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Glad my old sedan made it in this thread . backwoodsboy owns it now in NY. Its got a rear wheel drive setup with a LSD rear and a HiPo EA81 that screams. Very cool car! For the "new" version of that car check the classifieds for my coupe. -
Prolonging my Clutch for two more weeks (or so)
hatchsub replied to Rick James's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check your clutch cable and see if its too tight. Assuming you have a hillholder system...pull the upper cable off the shift fork at the transmission. then wiggle the shift fork. Is there any play at all? There should be just a bit of play so that when you reconnect the hillholder cable it pulls the throwout bearing away from the clutch fingers so that its not constantly riding on them. Im not talking a TON of play but just a tiny bit. Other than that there really isnt any other adjustments that can help the clutch last longer. If its starting to slip its either way too tight...which i doubt or its on its way out. With 146k i wouldnt be surprised if it was the original clutch. -
there were two aftermarket companies that did the conversions if i remember right. They were all done to 2 door EA81 coupes. They all looked terrible with the top up (my opinion) but with the top down looked really good.

Good luck finding that size. Every year buying tires in 13inch gets a bit more difficult. I took what i could and got 185/70/r13s for my coupe and they look good and handle ok. Honesty no tire is really going to help your handling that much with a stockish suspension. I have a good amount of mods to mine and handling is still Meh.

KYB VS Gabriel VS Monroe
hatchsub replied to BratWarrior's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Maybe it has changed since the last time that i looked at shocks/struts but i could not get KYB gas-adjust struts for the front. The only KYBs for the front were the GR2s which is why i have a set of 4 GR2s rather than gas-adjusts out back and GR2s in the front. Maybe its different now as this was years ago that i did a suspension overhaul but just food for thought. At any rate i have the GR2s all around and my only complaint is they are somewhat of a stock shock in terms of ride and handling. They are slightly better and will restore the factory ride to your car but dont expect too much more over that. -
yup it will with no problem.

Its actually carbs, intake, heads, and cam that are different. That engine all together would make over 100 hp where the standard EA81 only made 73-74. As others have said the intakes and carbs pop up from time to time but good luck finding a set of heads and cam. I looked for years and never found a set (that was for sale at least).

i pulled mine out once upon a time and found out that it controls the electric choke as well (DOH!) So...i put it back in and just live with the stupid check engine light to let me know that there is zero emissions stuff under the hood and the computer is freaking out. If you want to wire up the electric choke yourself then by all means yank it.

Sounds like a new cable and you'll be all set. I had similar issues and was the same problem...clutch cable was stretched out. I have a new one from subaru sitting in a box waiting for me to install it. Guess its going to be sooner rather than later.

Solid lifters on a hyraulic cam?
hatchsub replied to Dirk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I dont think there would be any real benifit. I haven't heard of the hydro cams having more lift than the solid lifter cams but maybe -

hatchsub replied to Dirk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes many times. When people send out their cams to be reground by delta...delta recommends using hydraulic cams as a starting point since there is more "meat" on them than the solid lifter cams. You can run solid lifters with a hydro cam. -
