  1. I didnt say the carter-weber because i had the impression that 83 was the last year for that. My car had the carter-weber. The main problem with those is low end hessitation when cold or warm. They do have a bit better pick up off idle cause if the larger main barrel but the hitachi has better top end.
  2. Are you talking about something like this? This is how i put a CD player in my car. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/724118/3
  3. You have a Hitachi 2brl. You can make sure of this by looking down the carb and seeing if you can see two barrels. If its a feedback carb then its computer controled to an extent. You can tell if its a feedback one if there is an O2 sensor on your exhaust and a computer under you steering wheel. The hitachi as most people on this board will tell you is pain in the butt carb to get right..but if it is running right is a good size for the engine IMO. Choke problems and hessitation off idle seem to be the most common problems on these carbs but there are a string of other problems like sticking floats and worn throttle shafts..the list goes on. Its up to you whether you want to keep it or not. If its running good dont mess with it. If its not decide if you want to rebuild it or replace it with a weber.
  4. i still cant believe that it only has 64,000 on it. Get that engine running good and drop it in that hatch!!
  5. EA81 would be easier and just as reliable as an EJ22 but with a lot less power . Advantage of the EA81 is no timing belts to change ever.
  6. its a common thing that has been done on this board many times with success. I was advised to do it and leave it in until the tranny felt good.
  7. Well im back with more issues. I did the ATF flush on it and it was shifting like butter after 800 or so miles. So i drained the now dark..burned ATF out and put in some redline 75w90 gear oil. Now im back to second gear being crunchy when cold. What gives? Could it be the higher viscosity of the gear oil is keeping that worn syncro from working properly and it worked fine with the ATF cause it was thinner? Im thinking maybe i should drain out about half a quart and put in some resline. What do you guys think. When its warmed up it seems to shift fine. Its only when its cold that it has this problem..and only when im going from first to second..never if im just pulling it into second to turn onto a street or something.
  8. someone on the board fabed T-tops onto his hatch so yes anything is possible if you want it bad enough. you would need the entire roof section from a brat to do it.
  9. did you hook all the vacuum lines up the right way? Im assuming you just put a carb on this car? When i put a carb on mine i had hooked up a line going to the secondary wrong so that the vacuum from the motor pulled it open imediately.
  10. Is that shot of the dash the white one or the blue one? If that thing has 64,000 miles on it and looks like that then someone must have driven it to a salt mine ever day or something. My cars got 64,000 on it and im in connecticut and mine still looks great for its age.
  11. wow i love the hatches..i miss my old one . Is your moms a 2wd 5speed?
  12. Doesnt that little cylinder in front of the air intake look alot like our subarus ASV valves?
  13. I would think the reason the brat, sedan, wagon tank wont fit under the hatch its because the tank is closer to the rear diff so having a bigger tank means it wont fit? Idk i usually dont question GD when it comes to stuff like that. Hes been there and dont that.
  14. 4wd manual tranny and driveshaft. there are probably more but thats what i can think of right now.
  15. hahaha well its only in recent years..say 1984-present that chrysler products have sucked. I would give anything for an R/T charger from 68-70. 375 horses and 8.1mpg..thats hot as a certain dumb blonde would say.
  16. i like the dash/center console on it. It looks more like a car interior than a truck. That is one clean Datsun.
  17. Well GL-10s are a bit harder to come by but SPFI engines are very common. So not that rare..but it is one of the most reliable 80's fuel injected suby motors. When i saw GL-10 i was worried for you and hoping you didnt have a turbo. Dont get me wrong turbos are cool but it seems that they are a lot of trouble if you are new to subarus.
  18. well im not sure how to adjust valves but i can tell you that you def have solid lifters. All manual tranny EA81s in 83/84 had solid lifters. Auto trannys had hydro lifters in those years. 85 and on all had hydro lifters. You can tell that its a hydro lifter block by the valve covers. Ones with hydro lifters have a little sticker on them saying "dont adjust valve clearance".
  19. 83/84 autos have the hydro lifter EA81. So yes yours has it.
  20. Could you get a factory sunroof on a gen 1 brat? That second brat and last brat have them so i was just wondering.
  21. Could it be that its set too lean? The choke is supposed to enrich the mixture so if its running good with the choke on and hessitating when its off maybe the mixture is set too lean. Pull a spark plug to check the color. As for the no fast idle..there is an adjustment for the fast idle cam. Im not exactly sure how to do it anymore but it involves bending a piece of linkage on the passenger side of the carb. You might also want to check the entire motor for vacuum leaks. I had intake leaks and vacuum hoses that were bad on my old subaru. Just my 2 cents. Ive never really tried to do much with my hitachi as it seems to be doing ok.
  22. it might be awhile before i get home again as its sitting in my basement and im up at school in storrs ct an hour and half away. Ill try to get you some picks though.
  23. Hey i just finished up an auto to manual swap and was wondering if there are different shocks/struts for manual tranny cars verses autos? It seems to be sitting a bit higher in the front than it did before as there is something like a 50 pound weight difference between the trannys. Thanks for the help guys.
  24. HAHAHA once a subaru guy always a subaru guy. I never dreamed i would want another subaru after all the problems i had with my old one. I ended up selling it due to rust and when i sold it i have all the bugs out of it. Now i have another and i love it. Very dependable. Thats what buying an 80s american car will make you do..go back to an 80s japanese car!!! Welcome back.
