  1. Hey all. Im assuming to get the old speedo cable out i have to pull my instrument cluster and undo the cable from the back then pull it through the firewall from the engine side? Then to put the new one in its just a reverse of that
  2. With the EA81's i believe you have to swap gas tanks as well. Having never done it i dont know if there are any more steps. All i know is stuff thats easy to do on EA82s is a PITA on the EA81s when it comes to swaps. As for the dash yes it will swap right in.
  3. cheap as hell...like a few dollars cheap
  4. huh weird..wonder how three cali spec cars got in new england from new
  5. My 83 was a former carter-weber feedback carb car. My 86 was a feedback hitachi. My brother-in-laws was a feedback hitachi. So all of them were feedback carb ones. Not sure what that means. Does that mean they were all equipted like CA models.
  6. well how was the carb running before the vacuum leak? If it was running fine then just keep it and either tap the hole on the intake for a bigger stud or get another intake for a hitachi 2 barrel and bolt it all together with subaru gaskets. Another hitachi intake can be scored on this board for as little as 20 bucks so dont fret. I got mine for 20 about a year ago on here.
  7. Interesting. Id be curious what areas got what exhausts. Here are the things i kno 1)my 83 sedan has two cats and was sold new in guilford CT 2)my former 86 EA81 hatch had two cats and was sold in CT 3)my brother-in-law had an 84 sedan in MA that had two cats from the factory as well Would this also have something to do with whether the car was a 2wd or 4wd? All of the cars i just listed are 2wd EA81's.
  8. well mine was sold new in Guilford CT and its still in Guilford so i know its not a CA model and its got two cats and so did my other CT subaru and it came from another CT dealership so im thinking it wasnt only a CA thing
  9. Im not sure cause im not looking at the carb but what i would try doing if i were you would be to tap that hole out for a slightly bigger stud..and i do mean only slightly bigger. You many also need to drill the hole out on the carb too to fit it over your bigger stud. The only thing im unsure of is how much room you have for a bigger bolt. I remember it being tight back there. And worst comes to worst get another intake and bolt on a weber.
  10. Well all i know is both of my EA81's have had two cats back to back. And maybe thats what i heard..that anything above 2 1/2 will do no good and actually loose power. Sorry my bad.
  11. wait your saying one of the carb studs that is sticking out of the manifold is getting pulled out when you tighten it down? If thats true i think your stuck yanking the carb and fixing that stud and resealing the carb down again. Never heard of that one before.
  12. well im not sure but does that car have two cats like the EA81's? If so delete one, and swap the other out for a high flow. Dont bother increasing the exhaust diameter. These motors need a certain amount of backpressure to operate well. Also get rid of the stock muffler and put in a high flow as well. Theres a write up somewhere on the kind of one too look for. I have a dynomax high flow on my car.
  13. yup EGR. Is the valve itself leaking or is it the gasket?
  14. Not sure what the regulations are in WV but up in connecticut you need the cat present to pass emmisions. My guess for you bad milage would be the O2 sensor being crapped out and possible a clogged cat. I dont think your alowed to pull the cat.
  15. or if mythbusters had run one with the AC on and windows up and one with the AC off and the windows up then the one with AC on would have run out of gas first
  16. I second the clogged fuel filter problem. Replace both (there is one in front of the tank and one in the engine compartment). Also to check if the carb is operating properly just pull the cover off the air cleaner, start the car and rev it up to see if the secondary opens. It should be opening toward full throttle. Hope this helps some
  17. That whole thing about it wasting too much gas is not correct. Mythbusters busted that one awhile ago. They got two identical ford explorers and a test track to run them on. One they ran with AC and the other they ran with the windows open around the track. The one with the windows open ran out of gas first I suppose that it could also be that newer systems are less of a drain on the cars engine than older ones. All i know is i ripped my compressor and condensor out of my subaru cause the compressor was shot and i didnt feel like spending the money to fix the system.
  18. Yeah that seems kinda high to me also... at 3500rpms my EA81 was doing about 65mph. The three speeds really suck.
  19. what GD said. Def try spraying around the base of the intake. Those gaskets might be the culprit. Also try some of the steel vacuum lines running under the manifold and in front of it. I had a leak in mine on my old subaru.
  20. My 83 was a feedback carter-weber what a hunk of crap..the hitachi is much better but still not perfect.
  21. Hmmm well it did the same thing with the carter-weber and i swapped on a hitachi now and it still acts the same. Thats why i was rulling out carb issues. But u think that i just got unlucky and have two carbs with the same problem?
  22. would this be my problem too? I just thought it was a carb car problem. When its warm it wont start for me unless i give it some gas as im turning it over and then it fires right up. I just shrugged it off as an old car thing :-\ PS sorry to hijack
  23. HAHA ok good point. I really didnt need to swap my car over to hitachi but i felt like it. Lost a bit of low end cause of the smaller primary but gained a whole lot of top end and hopefully ill gain back some low end with this manual gear box (whenever i get around to finishing it that is)
  24. Haha you still have the carter-weber?!?!? Are you planning a swap in the near future?
  25. Im thinking 28 sounds about right. Yeah u would think with over 20 years of technology they would be able to get better milage than your 81 but your 81 has a smaller motor and less weight to pull around. My sisters got a 2001 outback and shes only getting about 26-28 on the highway. Thats as good as my 83 carbed automatic GL.
