Eeewww... EA82 rear main seal tear-apart pics
hatchsub replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
wow thats pretty nasty. When i pulled the pan on my first suby (86 EA81 hatch) that had been sitting for 3 years before i got it it was clean enough to eat off of. Guess they took good care of it..and it had 120k on it too. -
couple of things you can do for it. Cheap easy way is to get some carb cleaner and spray it down the carb with the car running. Another is to use that cleaner and spray around the base of the carb and intake gaskets as these are usual areas of vacuum leaks which could cause an engine to do what you described. If the idle picks up when you do this you found your leak. Good luck.

88 gl Stalling and hesitation, starting off
hatchsub replied to lyonlyon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Might be something more simple than a sensor. Try getting some carb cleaner and spraying around the base of the throttle body and the intake manifold gaskets. If there is a leak then it will cause these problems. when you spray..if the idle picks up..you found a leak. -
Depends on what your looking for. Your brat is an EA81 car. You could find parts on 82-84 sedans 82-89 hatchs 82-84 coupes and of course 82-87 brats I think thats correct. If not some other board member will chim in.

Thanks for the kind words about the sedan Connie. I had a blast yesterday and i cant wait to get rid of this crappy auto. Im glad i got to meet everyone...well except Paul..and go figure he lives the closest. As for that car we raped..i feel so sorry for it must have been one awesome sedan back in the day. For those that dont know what it was it was an 83/84 EA81 5 speed GL-10 sedan...black with a gray interior..sunroof, digi dash and all power accessories.

parts needed for tranny swap?
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok thanks GD. Would you happen to know or would anyone happen to know if i need the manual starter too? Ive heard that the starter on manual tranny cars is slightly diff than autos. -
Hey now..i have a camaro...its a fun car and i dont drive like a jerk..though the car has given me a lot of problems:rolleyes:

oil collecting on bottom of filter
hatchsub replied to skinnyhb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is this an EA82 or EA81? I only have experience with EA81's so if thats what it is it could be a number of things. The simplest is that its not making a good seal with the pump and leaking from that gasket. More complicated but still fairly easy is that the pump gasket (gastket between the engine and the oil pump) is leaking and dripping down to the bottom of the filter. This is the most likely situation. Not sure if this advice translates to EA82's. good luck!! -
(TX) TSI Emissions FAIL!!!

O2 sensor..replace that too if you havent already with your new exhaust -
The '82 is running SUPER low oil pressure!
hatchsub replied to burtonsnowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
probably need a new oil pump. its cheap and easy to replace on these engines. at 256k i would be 99 percent sure thats what you need. -
parts needed for tranny swap?
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i would think that my antisway bar would be bigger because the auto tranny is the bigger of the two..and bigger is what i want right? -
13" Justy wheels ?
hatchsub replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All i know is the bolt pattern on Justys is diff than that of regular 80's subarus with 13 inch wheels and 4 bolts. Not saying there arnt 13 inch wheels that will fit it but not subaru 13 inchers. -
parts needed for tranny swap?
hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
its front wheel drive only and its a EA 81 tranny so im not sure what your refering too. I assume you think its a 4wd and im swapping from auto to stick and need to convert the transfer case control over to an EA 81 style? -
Ok so ive finally located a tranny for my car. Its a 5 speed out of an 84 suby. Its still connected to the engine that was pulled so i assume i will be getting the tranny, flywheel, bellhousing, and starter. What else do i need for the swap? Here is the list of things that i think i need Starter (not sure if mine will work with it or not?) pedal assembly crossmember shifter and linkage (if its not still on the tranny) anything else or anything i can remove from my list? Anyone have these items? Thanks guys

Would the tranny from a 2wd legacy/impreza fit my 83 gl. Local yard only has newer stuff. No old stuff. Im looking to convert over to 5 speed. Thanks.

Timing belts- 1991 Loyale 4WD Wagon
hatchsub replied to guidop70's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok just for my own knowledge..what year did subaru start making interference engines. My older sis has got an 01 outback and i wonder if her engine is interference or not. Are all newer subys intereference? -
sounds to me like you have a rust hole in the filler neck if its only when your filling it up that it leaks. Im not sure if you can just get a new filler neck or whether you have to get a new tank and neck as a package deal. Or you could do what i would probably do and put some duct tape around the hole
-
napa still has the paint chips for our subys. They can pretty much match it. If you want a perfect match however you would have to bring the car someplace and get the paint analyzed by a machine cause 20 years or so of weather will fade the paint and you would need to match to that fade.
-
Sweet you got an IROC too? I got an 86 that ive pretty much restored but grown tired of. I need to unload it soon. 54,000 original miles and a brand new paint job..know anyone interested? Its a cool color combo..dark red with a red interior. Hardtop car kinda rare.

HAHA well since im the one that started this i guess ill answer that. No you dont have to limit to just one of your subarus. As long as its a current ride and not one that you have to go out and buy.

yup timing gears on the back part of the engine
