What if you had all the money you could ever want with one catch..u could only spend it on your current subaru. What would you do? I know its late and im a space case. I personally would convert my 83 GL into a sleeper STI. The full STI drivetrain with the old school looks of the 83

Is there an easy way of removing these lines from under the manifold. If i was to convert to a weber i would want to clean up the underhood appearance a bit. anyone got an opinion on this one? Is there enough space to slip them out and unbolt them without taking the manifold off again. I know im just being lazy so sue me lol.

hatchsub replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

well as i said im open to every opinion. Yeah 2000 is probably pushing it for this car. 1500-1600 is probably more like it. And Jon does your hatch still have the tranny problems? That is one fine looking hatch. I still miss mine -
Hello everyone. If you have been following along in the classified section you already know that ive been trying to sell my 83 for a little while now. Well no ones bitting so i would like to hear some input from all of you. I was looking for 2000 dollars without the stereo but mainly i just want to shift my own gears. I dont have alot of money to spend so the main thing that i was originally going for was to sell the suby and get a 5 speed something as a replacement. The other options would be to convert this to 5 speed which i could see being a headache or trade for a car on here thats in just as good shape but manual. If someone has a solution that ive listed or didnt list i would like to hear it. Thanks everyone

Any chance that XT6 had a good alternator. I need one bad:-\ -
oh ok thanks i got you now. I just went and pulled the manifold gaskets. The new ones i have arnt the right ones go figure. And as for the ASV system its pretty rusty under there and they are working the way they should so i think i'll just leave them alone and avoid the headach of trying to get rid of them even though i still kinda want to. Maybe another time. Thank you everyone for your great advice.

uberoo..what are the plugs you talk of in step 6? Up to the point i follow. Thanks for the help so far. My car blew the exhaust manifold gaskets again so this time i bought the genuine subaru ones so that i dont have to deal with this BS anymore. This is the third time ive had to deal with it.

anyone?

Hey all, Im thinking of getting rid of my ASV valves just to simplify the mess under my hood and to keep the carb cleaner longer. I know there is a quarter trick to doing this but i want to pull the whole thing including the piping and the silencer. Anyone have any pictures or how to's to doing this? Im not sure where the quarter is supposed to go. Is this around the area at the manifold? And how rotted on will that pipe be around the manifold. My cars only got 62,000 on it but it still seems pretty rusty. This is going to be a pain im thinking.

Yeah i had the same problem with town fair tire on both of my subys. I ended up doing the balancing myself on my current one cause it was giving me a vibration on the highway. I have some nice mechanics and they let me do some of the work on my car myself if its a weekend and slow business. Turned out one out of the 4 tires was off. Fixed that one and now little to no vibration!! woohoo

As for the check engine light if this is an EA81 then pull the panel under the stearing wheel when the check light is on and look at the computer. There is a red LED on the side of the computer that will flash. It should be a series of slow flashes then fast ones. So 2 slow flashes and 4 fast ones means that its code 24. figure out what code its throwing and then report back. I have a manual that will tell what codes are what and if i dont get back on in awhile someone else on this site will be able to tell you what the code means. Good luck.

Just a Question
hatchsub replied to ()__1337_CRAYOLA__()>'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a similar thing with mine. Is your car leaking a lot of oil from around the pump? I just replaced the oil pump gasket and my PSI at idle never goes below 15..and most of the time its at around 20-25 at idle unless its the hotest of summer days. Also since you have the pump out you could examine it and see if its still good or if you dont know bring it somewhere and a have a shop decide for you. Good luck. -
Hey all. I was starting to notice last week if my car was cold it would be making a bit of noise from the exhaust manifold gaskets. But when it warms up it would quiet down to nothing. Well now i really went and did it and went wheeling in my 2wd..nothing hardcore mind you just some wide walking trails but i ended up hitting the exhaust on a rock going extremely slow. Not hard by any means but just enough to finish off that gasket so now i have a small leak all the time. Good stuff. Something tells me these napa gaskets are crap. Should i try factory ones? Anyone know the torque specks for putting them on? Thanks in advance Steve

Haha you said Poopy. Sorry if you all cant tell i have the mentality of a 5 year old.

Hey i know that at least on the later hitachi carbed EA81's there were dual duty solenoids mounted on the intake manifold but on the carter-weber carb there was only one mounted on the carb itself. I swapped intakes and my car runs great with the two barrel but i dont have a duty solenoid cause i would only need one. So my ECS light comes on because of this. Anyone know if there was a year when there was only one duty solenoid mounted on the intake and if so...anyone got a good one they want to get rid of Thanks alot guys.

EA81 Hatch Rear Speaker Options
hatchsub replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey i had an EA81 hatch. Those speakers are 4 inch rounds. There are not a lot of options out there for that small of a speaker and plus they sound terrible cause of how small they are. If i still had my hatch i would cut the hole open and see if i could fit 5 1/4 rounds. Also when wiring these things up just bypass the factory wiring. It is a common ground for all speakers and it will not work with todays high power headunits. You have to throw wires to all speakers. If you have any specific questions you can email me at goldsmobile@yahoo.com as ive done this many times now and three times in old subarus. My current system in my 83 sounds ten times better than most new stereos out there. -
Hey all. Its been awhile since ive had a question but this on is stumping me. Im not getting the best gas milage i dont think. I havent actually gotten a chance to do it out and give you a good estimate but im at the pump a lot more now than i was last year. I swapped the intake and carb from the carter-weber one barrel to a hitachi 2 barrel and it runs great except for the milage. I pulled one of the plugs to see if it was running rich and the plug was brown just like it should be. The fuel filters are both about 6 or 7 months old and the carb has about 6 thousand miles on it now. Anyone got any ideas or should i write back when i get exact numbers for gas milage. Last summer it was getting 27mpg on the highway with a 3 speed auto and going along at 4 grand for a long time. Thanks for any suggestions guys. PS this is on an 83 subaru GL four door with an auto 2WD.

300,000 on the original water pump? Congrates on that one!! Mine went at 53,000 cause it hadnt been driven enough and the bearing dried out. I replaced mine with a genuine subaru water pump. It was 65 bucks if i remember right. Also the dealership told me the average life for these things is 70,000 miles..so yeah you did GOOD!!

Mouse nest in my Blower - yuck.
hatchsub replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats pretty nasty. Ive seen one of those in a 70 olds cutlass SX with a 455 that had been sitting for awhile. My old 86 suby hatch probably had a small one but i was lazy and just turned the blower on full blast and cleaned it out that way -
The third eye is in!!!!

Yeah your def going to want to get a stronger alt before you hook up a sub and amp. I fried so many alts before i figured out that it was my amp and subs that were killing them. Ive since taken the subs and amp out and put a jy alt in and it hasnt given me any problems so far. I need to get a capacitor or a stronger alt or both before i put the subs back in. For alts you could go one of of two routes..the gm swap (theres an article of how to on here somewhere) or the XT6 alt (i think that should work for your motor too but dont quote me considering i dont own an EA71). -
Nope i def win with almost 60,000 on my 83 gl sedan...haha oh this is supposed to be high milage. my mistake.

Well guys i ended up having to get a new muffler sooner than i thought. My old one was about ready to fall off so i shopped around and found a nice Dynomax high flow muffler for a good price. 52 for the muffler, 60 for the shop to put it in. Its quiet but the power is nice. Thanks for the advise guys.

Hey guys. I have an aftermarket stereo in my EA81 sedan. All new speakers and headunit. Sounds amazing as long as its a CD playing but when i go to the radio i get static no matter what station..even the ones that normally dont have static. The antenna wire is firmly in place in the back of the headunit. Could this be a possible grounding problem with the antenna? If so where is the ground located for the antenna? It hasnt really bugged me too much until recently.
