  1. Well im talking once i kick the choke off. If i kick it off after a couple of minutes it will still stumble. Only when its fully warmed up will it run nice.
  2. Well...now that its getting colder again my bad hessitation is back. If i let the car warm up all the way its fine and runs smooth and doesn't hessitate much if at all. But if i start it and try to run it when its only partially warm then it has the tendancy to bog down or stall on me off of idle. It has the dreaded Carter/Weber carb on it but my old 86 with a hitachi used to do this too and that had a bunch more miles on it. I don't know what to do short of replacing every damn vacuum line under the hood. I know the other option is the weber carb which i think i will do in the near future when i have the funds for it (and a hitachi intake as well). Any suggestions for me guys? Is there one particular vacuum hose under the hood that causes this more than others or is it just the carb itself and should i live with it until i get the funds for a weber?
  3. Or from the rear main seal onto the cat (this happened to me for months before i got fed up of my car smoking out the sides at stoplights).
  4. Have you changed the O2 sensor? My 83 was running real rich until i did this.
  5. I've always been curious about those little circle block off holes too. I have an 83 GL sedan with power windows, power steering and air conditioning and i have no idea what those block offs were for either. Now im assuming one of them was cruise control but what about the others?
  6. Im going out on a limb here but you might want to try RAMperformance. They build performance EA-81's for aircrafts. If they don't have them i don't know who else would. Heres the link. http://ramengines.com/_wsn/page3.html
  7. Thanks for all the replies guys. Last saturday i was heading to the mall with a few of my friends and the voltage was at about 3 on the scale and not going up so i pulled it into a parking lot and borrowed my roommates car. It has taken me awhile but today i located an alternator for it one town over so i went over and picked it up at Bills Auto Parts in Tolland for 25 bucks. Put it in in about 20 minutes (gotta love working on subarus) and when i started it the gauge went back up to normal. Problem solved!! Dont know how long this one will last but im thinking a bit longer than the others considering it looks original and not rebuilt. In any case Bills has about 10 more of them sitting out back so i have found my supply. Im half thinking of getting another one to throw in the trunk just as backup.
  8. I'm glad to see you finally got that oil filter off and decided to keep it. I still kick myself to this day for selling my first subaru (an 86 EA-81 hatch). They're great cars and with the hatch even more fun. I used to throw two bikes in mine to go mountain biking. Cant do that with my 4 door though (would probably help if i didn't have the two subs in the trunk .
  9. Im going to have to go with the EA-81. Ive had two of them and neither one of them has ever let me down because of the engine (alternator has let down though on my current ride though). There are no belts to change or timing chains to go bad. Parts are cheap and you can do most if not all of the work on it yourself without needing to know anything about computers. My first EA-81 sat for three years before i got to it and all i did was change the oil and put a new battery in it and it fired up on the third try. Now thats a good engine in my opinion! Not going to comment on how it ran though :-)
  10. Will the O2 sensor still function with the weber or will i be getting rid of that too?
  11. "Once i installed my double barrel weber on my ea82 my mileage went up to over 30 mpg highway....but i recently backed into a huge stump in my driveway and now my pipes are basically f'd=crappy around town mileage....but tomorrow the car is getting new ones from the headers all the way back minus any cat(s). The emissions test have started up again. My subaru has already passed..on its second try. It needed a new O2 sensor. The reason i want to change the carb is to get a bit more pep out of it and get rid of the hessitation. Ive been told by a fellow that has worked on these since they were new that the carter weber carb was the worst they put on these cars and that mine is running as good as any he has seen but it still hessitates when it is cold.
  12. Will my car pass emissions if i put a weber on it and get rid of all the stupid mess under the hood? Im kinda getting sick of this one barrel carter carb but not of its milage (27 to the gallon). Any ideas? I just want to keep this car legal. Its an 83 EA-81 just for clarification.
  13. Some parts, if there is no rush on them, u could get from this site. Just put a wanted add up for the part you need. Otherwise there are good deals on ebay as well for waterpumps, alternators...etc etc. A good amount of parts also do not need to be subaru specific. I get spark plugs, wires and such from the local Napa. Hope this helps u.
  14. Subarus used to have a common negative for the front and the back speakers. This will not work with todays speakers. You are better off wiring up the speakers with some good quality new speaker wire. Its also a lot easier than trying to figure out what wire is what on the old wiring harness. Just whatever you do don't cut into the factory wiring. It will make life a b***h for someone down the road. Here is a pic of how i installed mine. I just moved the stereo down to where the small tray was and opened up the hole. It looks as close to factory as it can. Just scroll down the page until you get to the interior shot. Sorry the pic isn't any bigger. Im going to have to fix that later. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/724118/2
  15. Im on the east coast so i went to Town Fair Tire and picked me up some Toyo Tires. I have no complaints with them. They were the best that i could get for it and they were only 80 bucks. I figured i might as well.
  16. Even 15 is high on the gauge. Mine...when it was running (currently has another crappy alternator) would be just about 12.5 volts.
  17. It shouldn't be doing that. That means the alternator is overcharging which is not a good situation. You should get it replaced or if your not sure it needs to be, have a mechanic hook up a tester to it and make sure the gauge is reading correctly.
  18. Try replacing the fuel filter(s) too. That may help some.
  19. I think the turbo EA-81's were only getting 24mpg when new so yours is not too far off.
  20. Yeah something isn't quit right there. My 83 with an automatic and a single barrel carter carb gets 27mpg on the highway going 70-75 the entire time. Thats about 4000rpms. Does your car have an O2 sensor? If so maybe its time to replace it. My car was getting crap for milage until i did this.
  21. Ok thanks. If the junkyards want too much for them ill do that. Or would another better idea be to get a remanufactured alternator from napa? The only problem i have with napas is the price but im getting sick and tired of crappy rebuilt ones.
  22. Does anyone have experience with rebuilt autozone alternators? I just went on there website and they are selling 60amp rebuilts for around 56 bucks. Im only interested cause they are a bit more powerful then stock. The other alternative is to buy an original off of someone on this board. Anyone have a good 55amp alternator for an 83 EA-81?
  23. I never had a problem with hoses being a size off. I just picked up my hoses from napa and they were exactly what had come off. Hope this helps some.
