  1. Where can I get a Magnaflow exhaust for my 92 Loyale? Do they really help HP? How much do they cost? T.J.
  2. What did you mean by... " that kerosine trick is for crackheads, your lower end is scored worse than a hippie on acid! but at least it is quiet. " Yeah.... I got the crackhead and hippie joke... but why would kerosine score the lower end? I only ran it for about 5 minutes. Also, I agree. The oil it too thin. I will change the oil to 20W50 with MMO.   3. Hi All, I was thinking of doing this to my 92 Loyal, but I wondered if it would cause more problems because it would pull in the hot ait from the engine compartment, especially since the sit-box is above the front cat-converter. Wouldn't this cause the air to overheat? T.J.

UPDATE #2 I tried the following trick my Grandfather taught me on how to remove sludge from the engine. * empty oil (leave old filter) * add 1 quart Kerosene * add 1 quart Oil * run engine at idel for 8 minutes (or until warm) At this point, the clacking was about 1/2 as loud. Then I emptyed the rest of the oil-mix and followed your advice and added: * New filter * Marvel Mystery Oil (3/4 quart) * 5W30 oil I then ran the car at idel for 15 minutes (until hot) and the clacking STOPPED!!! So... I took it for a short drive and the engine purred like a happy little Subaru should. Thanks again everyone for all your help! T.J.
  5. UPDATE # 2 All the rear (passangers side) drive parts were replaced, along with a new bearing, drums, and brake pads. Now every thing works like new! T.J.
  6. UPDATE #2 After checking all mechanical and electrical stuff I read through the Hyanes Repair Manual and say a diagram of the automatic transmission with intergrated transfer case. So... I decided to check the fluids. The transfer case was fine, but the automatic transmission was very low. It seems that "the ex" had a quicky oil change place change the fluids and they didn't put enough transmission fluid back in. :madder: So... I added a almost 2 quarts of trand-fluid and gave it another go. It WORKS!!! The push button 4WD works flawlessly on the fly. I'm a happy camper once more!
  7. Hi All, I have a 92 Loyale Wagon that has the catalatic converter right under the front axel and U-joint. I have read many complaints about this design and that the heat damages the parts above it, so I frabricated a heat-shield, which helps a little. FACT: I have read that using an "insulating exhaust wrap" can help reduce engine compartment tempatures, prevent heat damage to parts, and improve HP by reducing exhaust restriction. QUESTION: So... what if I used insulating exhaust wrap on the cat instead of the metal heat shield? If I wrap just the cat, will that overheat it and damage it? Do I have to wrap all the pipes from the engine back to the muffler? Are there really any HP gains? T.J.
  8. Hi All, I have been toying with the idea of creating a ram-air intake for my 92 Subaru Loyale Wagon. However, I did not want to eliminate the origional air-intake or breather box which has a K&N air filter, so I though of adding a second air intake. My ram-air idea is this: Cut a hole in the breather box and run a metal flex tube down the inner fender around that side of the engine and mount the scoop under the front bumper. That way there would be air forced into the air filter while driving. What do you think?! Ideas? Suggestions? T.J.
  9. I used a similar "canned" stuff on my 92 Loyale to paint (and hide the rust on) the rocker pannels and the fender flares. However, preperation was key. After masking it off the areas and lightly sanding the paint, I used a rust-converter spray on the spots of rust. Then I used an Adhesion Promotion spray so the spray on bed-liner paint stuck like glue! Needless to say, my Loyale looks great and has not rusted in those spots again and the paint has not come off in over 2 years! T.J.
  10. Hi All, I was de-rusting and undercoating my 92 Subaru Loyale, 4WD, wagon, and noticed a bit of rust on the metal pipes near the fuel pump. I found one that is not part of the fule pump but is near it. It is a metal pipe that goes through the rear floor on the passengers side, about 6" back from the fuel pump. This hose is almost rusted in half and has a 1/4" hole in it. What is this funny little pipe for? Is this part of the emissions system? Could this be why the check-engine light came on? How easy is it to remove and replace? T.J.
  11. In a nutshell you need the 3 basics to make a car run. Air, Fuel, and Spark. So we need more details... Will the engine crank over? If it cranks over, is there any puff of exhaust? Is the engine getting air? Is there spark? Is there fuel in the carb or TBI? T.J.
  12. In answer to your question, yes the 4WD light comes on. As I mentioned, I inspected the wires and mechanical parts. Eveything appears to be in working order. What else can I check? T.J.

  14. Hi All, Like many of us, I would like to increase the "Oomph" on my 92 Subaru Loyale. I have a K&N air filter which helps a little, and will soon be wrapping the exhaust with insulating header wrap to reduce the exhaust restriction and engine compartment temp. I wondered about a supercharger (blowing more air into the engine) and wondered why I can't make a high-powered electric blower that forces more air into the engine? I did a search and found a company that is making an electric supercharger: http://www.electricsupercharger.com What do you think? Can we figgure out a way to make our own? T.J.
  15. I All, I have a 92 Subaru Loyale, auto, push button 4WD that I want to test as the rear wheel was previously damaged. I have the car up in the air on jack stands. I have checked all the driveshafts, axels, etc. and the rear assembly seems to be in good working order. Eveything can be moved by hand. I have also checked the electrical system and you can even hear the sylonoid engage to activate the 4WD. QUESTION: How come when I start it up and engage 4WD the rear wheels don't turn? Dose this type of system have to be on the ground moving forward slightly before it will engage? T.J.
  16. UPDATE... Searched everywhere and finally found a junk yard with a wrecked 93 Loyale. I got an entire rear assembly that included, shock, arm, axel, brake drum, etc. for $100. With the help of my brother (a great mechanic) we removed the damaged rear assembly and replaced it with the newer one. Removal was difficult because NYS winters with all the salt had most of the bolts rusted in very tight. Now the rear is back together. I just need to turn the drums and replace the pads and it'll be good as new. As for the 4WD system... I checked all the mechanical parts and they are undamaged. Everything moves freely. I also check all electrical components. The sylonoid works correctly and you can hear it engage. Perhaps the 4WD system only works when the car is moving down the road??? Any ideas? T.J.
  17. I have a similar problem with my 92 loyal, but it's more of a loud "TAK, TAK, TAK" sound that goes away when the engine is hot. The 92 has hydraulic (self adjusting) lifters. According to the others in this group, they state that "noisy lifters" are a common problem which is due to a dirty engine. The suggestion was to add an engine oil detergant, run it, drain it, then change to a non-Fram oil filter (cause they are defective)and use a lighter weight oil. I have done this to mine and it's 50% quieter. They say after a few 100 miles the noise should go away. Best of Luck! T.J.
  18. Here's more details... 92 Subaru Loyale Wagon (was a great little car) ...up on jack stands, start engine, put automatic in drive, push 4WD button, 4WD dash light comes on, front wheels spin, rear wheels and drive shaft don't spin. Any ideas? TJ

  20. I am able to turn the rear wheels, axels and drive shaft by hand and there are no bad noises. What controls the push button 4WD? Anything specific I should look for? Thanks! TJ
  21. Hi All, I am new to this group, so a bit of background first... I am recently divorced (and won) so the ex-wife had to give back my car. Unfortunately, she had an "accident" that was never repaired and the car is now un-drivable. I have a 1992 Subaru Loyale, wagon, on-demand 4WD, auto ...that got hit in a parking lot. The rear passengers wheel and rim look as if they got hit by baseball, which bent the rim. I’m guessing it was a trailer hitch. Because the "ex" continued to drive it after the accident… the bearing is worn out, axel shaft spline teeth are ground off, brake drum is cracked, and all seals are destroyed. Aside from replacing the obvious, are there any other areas to check for damage? Any advice on how to change the axel shaft spline? Also, since the car is on 4 jack stands, I wanted to check the 4WD. When I started it and put it in gear, only the front wheels turn. Is this normal when the car’s wheels are off the ground? Thanks in advance. TJ
