  1. NEED ADVICE Put a message up a few times and appreciate all the help. These symptoms have been going on for a month .... went over speed bump heard small sweak. Week later turn left or right and heard a creaking sound. Towed to mechanic . New cv axle and wheel bearing. Car ran great two weeks . Drove on highway 5 miles exit bumps on road ....creaking sound returns. Drove to mechanic put on lift car running mechanic inside car turning wheels ..noise coming from transfercase. Never was the cv or bearing ... 4 mechanic could not figure it out. Everything is activated by bad roads or bumps .... I don't aim to drive on bumps but the slightest bump can produce the creak on the next turn..... I learned how to drive the car ...without producing the noise or creating more damage. I am not a mechanic and know nothing about cars. I went on line and to me it sounds like a tie rod. I do hear a light pop sound at times ...maybe a inner tie rod coming loose. New bearing, cv, brakes , ball joint, control arm ....hate to junk a perfectly great running car The engine runs great. No sounds going up hills or down. No sound going straight fast or slow. Slight sweak when braking but it been damp out. This only happens after a bump in road triggers something and then you hear creak on left or right turn. If you drive slow during the turn it is minimal. When you return to driving straight after turn the noise continues for a few feet. I can feel the creak under my foot in the middle of car .....transfercase. Change diff oil ...small leak but not low ...no metal shavings. Transmission runs very smooth. There is definitely a alignment issue right passenger outer edge worn and the left shows some wear on edge. As I said 4 mechanic looked at car and are experienced.....they repair large truck diesel and cars. Can a tie rod plus worn bushing create all of these problems. Going to try a new mechanic tomorrow .....second opinion. I don't want to go to my local dealer. Any advice would help ....
  2. Second message on this topic 98 Subaru Legacy auto 105,000 I am not a mechanic .... But owned a few cars ....and with YouTube can learn a lot. I live in cold climate and cars rust and potholes. Recently heard a noise that sounded like a cv axle going bad ...on turns. It was a combination of cv axle and a hung up calipers. I put up the message and got a response from two great people....the noise is suspension. I felt it was myself because it acts up with speed bumps ...... but the sharp turns confused me .....thinking cv. My very busy mechanic ...put on a new cv axle and wheel bearing. Noise returns after driving on not so great roads. My mechanic drove the car running on the lift ....not on ground ....sound came from the middle transfer case ..... he said that he does not repair transfer case. Repairs this year cv axle, wheel bearing , control arm , brakes a good $2,300. I am not a mechanic but being under the car a hearing the noise I thought that the ( thing that goes into the transfer case to operate the wheels from the the gears in the transmission should be replaced. It a horrible creaking sound after hours of YouTube ....I think tie rod As I said I am no mechanic....but trying to figure out if the vehicle is worth keeping ....I be glad to put a few more dollars to drive it a few months more. It seems that everyone on this message board has a lot knowledge..... I know nothing about cars ....but know enough it tires wear on outer edges suspension or aliment.... I notice that steering wheel is crooked and at times more play . Never vibration. Tie rods look easy and not expensive. Looking for some advice .. Would love to repair the car to be made safe. No intention of keeping it that long basic transportation. Outside of this suspension issue never had trouble with the car. Looking to find a trustworthy mechanic at a fair price that can resolve these issues. Any advice is appreciated.
  3. Need help ....Please 98 Subaru legacy automatic. 105,000 Car runs great ..... live in cold climate snow and salt . Last summer had ball joint failure ..... front passenger side repaired ball joint and control arm. Ran perfectly. Last month noticed slight sweak going over speed bumps. Noise went away. A week later ....went to make turn hear clicking noise .....assumed cv joint. Called tow truck and the noise disappeared for the driver. Had mechanic put a new cv axle and wheel bearing ......I do trust my mechanic the boot was not open but grease was dry and bearing was worn. The car ran perfectly. Went on highway for five miles ...... for the first time since repaired. No issue..... going down main road and a few bumps and small potholes. Always drive slow. I noticed a sweak again .....then the same creaking sound .....it is like walking on a old floor board in a old home. Drove straight to mechanic ...put on lift with car running the sound is coming from transfercase....... I did notice a week before diff oil .....light beige in my blacktop driveway. Check the differential oil it was not low.....but change it. The oil was dirty but no metal shavings. No creaking but still sweaky at low speeds. A few days later noise went away. It seems to be activated by bumps and driving over 20 miles. Drove car 10 miles yesterday cold weather started to hear sweaky noise plus a small thumping sound ...from passenger right front. Like a flat tire. I did notice tire wear on outer edge of both front tires ......especially the front passenger. Aliment issues . This is my second Subaru ....my first gave me ovet 200 thousand with no issues .....I do baby my cars. Paranoid to drive this car ....in fear of front end falling off ..... the creaking sound. Would like to repair the car....but 4 mechanics can't figure it out. Went on line and read about removing a fuse to stop the AWD. Not into band aid fixes..... Hope to get a little more time out of the car. Any suggestions on how to repair car. I appreciate the help
