  1. Thanks a lot for the help, guys. Once this thunderstorm clears up I'm gonna head outside, hook this stuff up, and start stripping the harness. Now I just have to figure out where the hell to put the ECU.... Speedo does work; odo looks like it was hand-rolled to where it is now (149,999 on the verge of rolling to 150k). The odometer isn't really necessary, of course, but is nice for calculating mileage and such. We have 3 spare EA82 dashes in the basement, maybe I can hack in an RX trip computer once it's all together, haha. Also, thanks for the hint on the FPCU switched power. The car currently just has wires sloppily crammed into the fuse box for switched power!
  2. Well, I'm the new lucky owner of this car, an '86 Brat with a half-finished EJ22 swap from an '01 Impreza. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=110413 Engine and harness are from an '01 automatic, ECU is from an '00 manual car. Car is running the stock EA81 4-spd with the XT6 pressure plate. I have an ECU pinout diagram, and Numbchux' EJ swap guide handy. However, as far as I know this is the only OBD-II swap done yet (eek!) and I am kind of lost on a few different things: 1. How the heck do I hook up the tachometer and coolant temperature gauge? Everything else is wired up and working already, I could really use those two gauges; especially the tach, due to the lack of a VSS. 2. How does the vehicle speed sensor need to be wired up? Even with the fuel cut kicking in at like 3k, I can drive it anywhere I need to, but having access to the full rev range is obviously the ideal way to drive it. My roommate (the infamous milesfox) was saying something about ABS sensors and XT6 control arms, but I really don't know what the hell he meant. 3. Now, the dumb question: the odometer and trip meter are disconnected/not working. Suggestions? I GREATLY appreciate any help that you guys can give me. Even without a tach and fuel cut at 3k, this thing is a total blast to drive! Help me finish it so I can smash on WRXs at local autocrosses!
  3. Maybe a bad wheel bearing? if so the rotor will walk around and ride against the caliper bracket, and wear the pads down at a slant. make sure the axle nut is installed and torqued correctly. Animproper axle nut/washers install will compromise the wheel bearing and eventually the hub splines where they engage the axle
  4. I have done this repair. Use a drift punch to knock out the roll pins(or 'rivets' as you refer to) and you can remove the shifter from the shaft and pull the seal. My NAPA parts counter man was able to cross reference a honda civic shift shaft seal, which is a better design than OEM
  5. car will be just fine in stock form. dont let all this ea82 mystery scare you away. just understand what you are getting into otherwise as a project. you sound like you know what you are doing. stock form is great; modify at your own risk, use your best judgement, and heed everyone's cautions in doing so the car is still worht its weight in parts if you do go destroying ea82 engines. the trans alone is very desireable in this car, and can handle an ejmotor with an adator plate and such. my opinion is: enjoy the car all day long how it is, or consider an ej swap if you want to go with modifications. for one, ej is a more reliable motor, for two, there is no aftermarket for ea82, but plenty of support for ej. as far as the car itself, its a perfect platform to drop an ej into
  6. My vehicle is a non-turbo EA82 '88 DL SPFI with push-button 4WD. It has the 23 spline axle stock. We had a set of EA82 GL-10 turbo automatic (23-spline instead of 25 which the manuals have) axles kicking around and figured they'd fit so we tried. I'm just wondering if one axle is longer or what as the right side went in without issue.
  7. So I've undertaken an axle swap on my '88 DL 4WD. It had the stock axles, we swapped them for 23-spline automatic turbo axles. The passenger side went together without any hassle, but the driver's side axle seems to be too long! With the axle pin secure on the tranny stub and the axle through the hub, the ball joint seems to be 1/8" too far out to properly drop in. Is the AT narrower? Has anyone run into this before? I looked at the axle data sheet in the USRM and it didn't help much. Any help would be great.
  8. I tried searching on this but couldn't really find anything pertinent. Basically, I'm just wondering if anyone makes an EA82 a-bar/push bar, because I lack the fabrication skills to make my own. I saw that Allied Armament makes neat bumper replacements, but that's not really what I'm looking for. Any help would be appreciated.
  9. here is a series of pics of a heads-up teardown and putbacktogether. http://www.economysuperstar.com/milesfox/gallery/rxbuild/
  10. if your car is in fact an 87 its going to have a schematic similar to an 86 withthe connectors similar to an 88. its a little bit of mix beween the 85-86 and the 88+. notice how the 87 year has a different steering wheel than the other years
  11. Wow, I had no idea they were actually worth anything. I just figured $5k for a slightly rusty bare-bones AWD auto wagon was a bit steep, RHD or not.
  12. Don't count out the differential. My old Supra did exactly what you're talking about, before it vomited up its LSD.
  13. https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/cbrito/web/WEB%20RHD.html?uniq=-9c4km7 Found this on my local craigslist yesterday. I can't stop laughing.
  14. Yep, just changed the oil. Sounds the same. Looks like it'll be time for a new beater soon! :-\ 260k miles, and it was doing so well. If it's the throwout bearing, it won't be too much to fix - here's hoping that's what it is. But for now, I can only afford to drive it 'til it blows up.
  15. I put a new clutch disc in it last October - left flywheel, throwout bearing, etc due to money constraints. PO dumped the clutch at full throttle and shattered the old disc. *cough***********************cough* Anyways I've checked the gear oil, other than being a filthy color, it seems full enough. I'll try to change it out with some 75W90 dino stuff once this ********************* snow stops and I can get my RX7 out of the garage. For what it's worth, I only get the crazy noises on throttle; the car seems to drive fine, it's just loud.
  16. I have a '95 OBW, it's the second gen Legacy body style but it has a quad port EJ22. Dunno if that was factory or not, but it doesn't really matter. I've been having tranny issues. Everything works fine...kind of. It always drove fine except for 4th gear not working (which I think is a bushing issue, because I just can't get it into gear, and the linkage is a bit loose). But I got in the car this morning, and it's catastrophe. First second and third gear seem to whine like mad intermittently, and there's a nasty grinding noise. Oddly enough fifth doesn't seem to do it, but maybe that's because I nad nowhere to get into the higher RPM's in it. Is my tranny eating itself? Can it be saved?
  17. I've seen a couple small pictures of this car, but nothing else. Does anyone have any more info or bigger pictures?
  18. Well my timing belt skipped a tooth on the passenger side cam yesterday while doing some snow drifting. At least I think so. It runs like rump roast and if you pull the plug wires on the passenger side it doesn't really run much different. Anyways, Miles Fox has agreed to do my timing belt. He's an EA82 guy, so other than the fact that there's one belt instead of two, what's different in the procedure? I run sans timing covers so it should be an easy job once we get it figured out.
  19. My '95 OBW is leaking gasoline near the right rear wheel of the car. I used to notice a faint gasoline smell but wasn't sure what it was, now I shut the car off, look behind the RR wheel, and see a slow but constant drip of gas. I can't see where the hell it's coming from; later today I'll take a look, but FWIW, it stops after the car has been shut off for a while. What could it be?
  20. I'll wongleflute around with them. They're in an EA82 right now, and I have machining tools, so the swap shouldn't be too hard.
  21. I've never liked the stock Legacy seats - despite the largeness, they manage to be quite uncomfortable. My favorite seats are the smallish ones in the XT/XT6, and I have access to a set. The question I have is, what would be involved in mounting them in my Legacy? Swapping the rails, or more involved than that?
