FUJI Bond...aka Super three bond or what not
Dr. RX replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Gee, on all the Porsches that I have worked on and owned, I never used any type of a sealant on the head gaskets, nor did the factor manuals recommend any. But, there was a special sealant used on the joint between the two case halves. That sealant was a redish brown color, it is made by 3M, I think I still have an old tube (probably not good any more) laying around somewhere. -
WOW, this has got to take some kind of prize as the weirdest problem. In my over 40 years of working on cars, I have never heard anything like this. There has got to be a simple explaination. So you drove them into the garage, what did you do then? In the morning (or whenever), when you went to start them, what exactly did you do? How did you get them out in the cold again?

Official welcome home get together for Jared
Dr. RX replied to Qman's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
In Jared's post, he mentioned that he didn't get leave until 3/1/2005, if that is true, then we'll need to move the date of the welcome back weekend. -

Gee some people can't take compliments very well. Maybe you should re-read all the posts again, this time don't take them in order because someone maybe responding at the same time someone else does and their post will appear before the other's does, making the string out of context. If you feel my comments are personal attacks, you'd better not go to other message boards, they will eat you alive.

Eventhough Rob has aready answered, here is a rule to go by without look at the engine; car from 1980 to 1984 were generally EA81s (some EA71s in there), from 1985 to 1989 they were EA82s, this rule doesn't include the BRAT and the Hatchback (not to be confused with the 3 door). There were EA82s from 1990 to 1994, but there were also Legacys and Imprezas in that time frame. It only applies to 4 cylinder cars.

Gee Rob, I can't believe that you would challenge the doctor. Yep, the hatch is an EA81, if the rear brakes off of an EA82 will fit on an EA81 then the rear brakes off of a XT6 will fit also. As for the fronts, if you use the strut tops off the that EA81 struts, the EJ series struts will bolt right in. Or you can redrill the strut tower on the EA81 to accept the three holes required for the EJ series struts.

If you what to do a 5 bolt conversion, you'll need to ge a tranny with a 25 spline stub axle (ie and turbo tranny), then you can only use front suspension parts, the knuckle, strut, axle, tie rod end, ball joint, and all the brake stuff, but now you won't have an e-brake. Nothing in the rear will work. Dragonlee, I'd like to see that 90 Impreza, it is rare, considering that Subaru didn't make an Impreza until 1993.

To change the stub axles on the tranny, you'll need to pull the tranny apart. Just how much longer are the EA82 axles then the EA81s? The EJ axles are a whole 4 mm longer then the EA82 series, yet they work perfectly for a 5 bolt conversion. And if you are planning to use the EA82 front suspension, you'll need to use the EA82 axles.
