Nope the one Tex showed us is in Washington, sad to say, not Cal. -
Since you don't have your manual handy, the cam tower is the thing that the cams are on, between the head and the valve/cam cover. I use a dye that I get from NAPA to trace down oil leaks, it is added to the oil and checked with a black light. NAPA also sells a neat black light that is about the size of a ball point pen, it works really great for checking oil leaks in hard to get at places.

I can think of at least three members of this board, and a few more from the NASIOC board.

I really can't tell from the pictures if it is a 4WD, but it's got a great skip plate up front. As for the A/C, back then the Paris to Dakar was a very popular race, and if you've ever driven across the desert areas of the SW USA, you'll know why there is A/C in there, the Sahara is even hotter. As for the model year of the car, that is what was on the jpeg for a file name, I really don't know the actually year of the car.

Well, that looks like a Gen 1 BRAT, and you have a rare non-USA market BRAT if it is truely a 1993 model year. I can't remember when they stopped producing BRATs for the USA, sometime in the late 1980's I believe. Also, I never knew of or saw a BRAT with air suspension, do you have any pictures that you can post??? Corky

Yea, Gr8Wheels would one of the places, but they seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth. I have Jon's cell phone number and Kevin's private e-mail address, and they will not return calls or e-mails. I've never tried the other place, I'll have to look them up. Found them, here's a link, http://www.chasteauto.com/newindex.htm

There was one on eBay a couple of weeks ago, he was converting a 914-6 (a rare car in it's own right) he had the engine mated to the tranny and in the car, but that was about as far as he got. He was including the orginal engine with the deal. If it hadn't been in Florida, I might have given it some thought. But I would have restored the 914-6 and found a 4 cylinder 914 to convert.

Actually I do know the answer.

Hey, those front brakes don't have an e-brake setup, are they from a Legacy or Impreza?? What are you doing for an e-brake???
-
Yep,another 5 speed conversion
Dr. RX replied to onecrf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You had me slightly confused there until I realized that you left the 'EA' out from infront of the 81 and 82 in you post. At first I thought you were talking about model year, and the only 5 speed in 82 was a 2WD. -
Dohc Ej22???

Yea, right, I don't F$%king think so. The N/A EJ22 is closed deck, and the first one of those was built in 89. Where did you get the idea that only the turbo charged engines were closed deck? Not having a Lecay Turbo here to go look at the data plate, I can't take the time to do that, but I do have the engine from one on an engine stand. I was merely quote from a link you posted, which it appears both of us know is wrong (the part about the engine casting). As am I trying to find the truth, if you can point to an official Subaru link the shows the alpha codes for the early EJ series engines, it would solve this whole thing. -

Like I posted earlier, the passages will not match if the engines are different. It could be that people who have tried this before used heads from a semi-closed deck engine, those passages would be closer then an open deck engine. But heck, you don't seem to believe anything that I say, so go ahead, switch whichever heads you want, that is your choice, I can't stop you. By the way, I'm still waiting for someone to point me to a place where those alpha character are stated like Matt is being quoted. -

Apparently you didn't read all the post in the link, there several people stated that their Legacy Turbo had EJ22T on the engine as well as the data plate. I looked at mine, and it only has EJ22 on the engine. -

THAWA, is that what I really said?? I gave a range for EJ22 closed deck engines, and stated the the EJ22Gs falls within that range, I did not state that the EJ22G was as old as 1989. The US Legacy Turbo was from 1991 to 1994, isn't that within that range that I stated????? Quit trying to read thing into what I am saying, and reading only what I am saying. -

I don't recall saying that the years I quoted were only USA models. And STi did existed then, actually until back to 1987, they just were not called STi then, it also isn't a company, it is a branch of Subaru. I just went out an looked at my Legacy Turbo engine, the only thing cast into the engine is EJ22, but on the timing cover it has the word 'TURBO' under SUBARU. Since all my Subaru data points to the Legacy Turbo engine being an EJ22G, I will continue to call it that until someone can give me photographic proof of something else. You can call it what you want, but to the best of my knowledge, the only 'T' engines in Subaru histeory were teh EA81T and the EA82T. -

I guess I should ask (should have asked before), what year EJ22 do you want to put these heads on? I know that the early ones (89-94) are closed deck, which also covers the turbocharged EJ22G, for those engines you would need a closed deck head from an EJ20G (or the JDM N/A EJ20, also DOHC). I know in the newer cars the EJ22 was changed slightly, but I don't know what the decking is in those engines. The best thing is to match the engine deck to heads from and engine with like decking (closed, semi-closed, or open). The engine I will be putting together is an EJ22G out of a Turbo Legacy, I have the heads off of an EJ20G. It may be awhile before this comes together, but when I'm done, I should have something close to a 22B engine. -

Well, would you rather be safe or sorry. I also visit NASIOC board alot, that this subject has been talked almost to death there. I believe the concenus is that you need to match the heads to the engine. It is not just the coolant passages that need to line up, there are oil passages there also. Do you want oil in the water and water in the oil? I would feel much safer knowing the all the passages line up like they should. -

Right idea, wrong heads. The heads you mentioned here are for open or semi-open deck engines, since all the USDM EJ22Gs I've seen were closed deck, you'll need to get a set of closed deck heads, those came on the early EJ20G used in the Legacys (JDM and others) -

So what year is the car. If it has a lot of options, it might have an LSD since the original buyer seemed to like options. I think freak just wants a matched set, tranny and rear diff, that way he'll know for sure he has a match.
