Attention XT6 & RX experts
Dr. RX replied to RenaissanceMan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't believe that they are, I put XT6 front struts on my RX when I did the 5 bolt conversion and the front sent lower. As for the dealer, you'll probably get that from most dealers since most of the Subarus that they see are less then 10 years old. -
The Hatch Patrol story-the unveiling(with pics)
Dr. RX replied to Qman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mike, funny you should say that, I have the plans for my garage (thanks to Tex's dad), it will probably be built during next winter. Then I will have a place to carry out my R&D ideas for the UltimateOffRoadSubaru. I don't have the deep pockets that it might take, but I can wait and save, then do some more, wait and save, then some more, you get the picture. It may not be street drivable or maybe not the best rock crawler, but it will be able to run Baja or Paris to Dakar. -

I think Ken said that they used Nissan parts, if you look at my post on one of the LSD posts, you'ii see the connection between Nissan and FHI and Subaru. -
OK. Let's talk about this picture.

Anyone want to try and wipe the grin off of Ken's face??? Hey John, did Austin make back down there?? I can hardly wait to see the results of that project. Both his and your new toy. -
Thanks Zap, but the list of west coasters is very long, and I wouldn't want to leave anyone one out or bore the east coasters wish a large post, so I won't post it. There is regional pride, and that goes deeper then just west or east coast, but the most important thing is our pride in our ride, Subaru.

Mike, I'm going to start this rumor that is not really a rumor, but sounds good. I hear that you will be selling some more parts soon. In your area too. -
what's a crank angle sensor???
Dr. RX replied to Buddythedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You've got to love those tech manual writers and engineers. "This distributor is equipped with a photoelectric crank-angle sensor which transmits a crank-angle signal and a cylinder-identification signal to the fuel injection control unit." I guess that you could calculate the crank angle at the distributor, but with all the slop that can occur between the crank and the distributor, I wouldn't say it was reliable. I guess that they wised up with the EJ series engines since that crank sensor is sensing from the crankshaft directly. -
what's a crank angle sensor???
Dr. RX replied to Buddythedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Code reader, that's a good one, the code is a series of flashes of a light diode on the ECU, right under the steering wheel. If you ever go back to that dealer, have that mechcanic show you the code reader he used. Please take along a digital camera because I'd like to see it also. -
There are wires to deal with, the connectors are totally different. But the bigger question is, why would you want to replace an anolog dash with a digital one, most people who have digital dashes would rather have the anaolog dashes. There are times when you can even see the digi-dash because of glare.

what's a crank angle sensor???
Dr. RX replied to Buddythedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yea, I know we hashed this before, but no one could prove that the EA82 has a crank angle sensor. The one on the EJ series engine is located over the crank and uses a notched wheel attached to the crank at the front to sense the correct crank angle, it is one half of the signal needed to cause the spark plugs to fire, the other is a cam angle sensor mounted on the left cam (on SOHC engine or left intake cam on DOHC engine). Rallyrus, is that diagram from a Subaru FSM?? If so which one, which section and which page? -
what's a crank angle sensor???
Dr. RX replied to Buddythedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Did you tell the dealer it was a 93 EA82 series car? I'm not sure if the EA82s have a crank angle sensor, I know the EJ series engines do, and those start at 1990. So if you didn't let them know it was an EA82 series engine, they might have read the code for an EJ series engine. What was the code error? -
5-lug post by Tex...Where is it?!?!?!
Dr. RX replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Gee, that's not the whole posting. Since I taught Tex everything he knows about this type of a conversion, is there anything that I can help you with. -
This looks like a job for Jerry and/or Pat.

What wagon, I see some wheels and a pair of head lights, but no wagon.

The I/C is an air to air type, which the Impreza used, Legacys used a water to air I/C, so at least the picture of the I/C is from an Impreza. Since the Legacy and the Impreza used that same type of engine (externally looks the same, internally not) it would be hard to tell unless I got the complete engine number.
-
Great snag, but remember, your dual range has a 3.90 ratio, the LSD rear diff has a 3.70 ratio. So unless you swap out the carrier in the 3.90 rear diff with the carrier in the LSD rear diff, you need the tranny that was in the car you got the LSD from.
-
Something bugged me about the transmission mount pictured on eBay, so I checked some JDM WRXs that I know about and sure enough, that is not an Impreza tranny mount. It is the mount off of a Legacy. So, if you were to install this into an EA82, that is the mount that you want, but if you were to install it into an Impreza, that mount wouldn't work.

I know of two shops in So Cal that do this type of thing, but not many Subarus, mainly Toyotas and Hondas, there is a place in Texas that does it and one in Vancouver Canada that does it. I haven't heard of any place on the each coast that does it yet (that doesn't mean that there aren't any). Yes it is very complete, but the price is an east coast price, it can be about $500 less over here on the west coast. Plus, to get this from the east coast to the west coast would cost at the minimum another $500. The reason why I stated that I didn't conside this a holy grail is that 'holy grail's' are usually something that are extremely rare, like the famious Subaru original 3.90 LSD, or a first gen RX. I have never seen either of those for sale, but right now I can find at least 4 similar setup to the one shown here for sale.

Hard wiring the fan to the battery?
Dr. RX replied to lepetitprince's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If your radiator is 22 years old, that is probably the reason why your engine is over heating. So, before you go rewiring the fan(s), install a new radiator and see what happens. These radiator get clogged inside the radiator, water still flows through them, but as time goes on, less and less of the radiator actually has water flowing through it, so there is less area to cool the water. To tell you the truth, I would be really surprized if your radiator is that old, has someone in you family owned the vehicle that long? If it truly is that old, it would have to hold some kind of a record for surviving that long. -
I used to think the Forester was an Impreza chassis user, but some one told me that it uses a Legacy chassis, and at closer inspection I think they are right. Either way, I'd take an Impreza any day over a Forester. No USDM model Impreza had a 2.0 liter engine, it was either 1.8 or 2.2, later the 2.5 was added. It wasn't until the USDM WRX came along that the Impreza (GD instead of GC body) did it get a 2.0 liter engine, and the was WRX only. The 00' is a GC body. A 00' RS 2.5 is a fun car.
-
I've done a couple of these now and I'm getting better at it, also learning more secret on how to do it. For those on the east coast this looks good, but remember up to 96 Subaru used a larger turbo on the WRX, so there is more lag then from 97 on. It's alright once you get used to driving it, if you want to stay on the power you need to keep your rpms higher before shifting. I also won't consider this a holy grail.

Well, let's see, that makes Ken, Zap, Rob, Mudrat and I that know about what happened, anyone else??
