Swap Wiring, merging harnesses MORE MYSTERIES
Dr. RX replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
One of the biggest problems with conversions is the wiring. I would try to use as much of teh EA82 wiring harness as possible. If you know what year of vehicle the EA82T came out of, you should get a FSM for that year and look up the wiring section, that should be a big help. You may have to splice wires from one harness onto wires of the other to get them to work. I usually get all that stuff together before I start a conversion like this, but even then sometimes it gets very confusing. -
Nope, I haven't looked at them, but they would have to have the same bolt pattern as the current rear calipers to bolt to the backing plate. Then it would just be a matter of figuring out the cable runs.

I'm a little miffed at the moment, for some reason my FTP won't let me update my files, so be patient, I'll get the new data on the web as soon as I figure it out.

Gee Rob, I wonder what you next project could be??? I'll be waiting for your e-mail with the data.

No Fox, the Legacy uses a shoe type parking brake inside of the rotor for the rear disc brake. I have looked at alot of rear parking brake setups and so far, the only one that comes close is an early Toyota Supra rear brake system. I have that system that I removed from and old Supra. I need to check and see if the holes in the mounting plate need to be re-drilled to mount on the Subaru rear swing arm. The rear caliper is the same as the rear calpier on the Subaru rear disc brake setup. Then I will have to see how to route the cables up to the parking brake handle. I'll probably have to use the Toyota handle since the EA seris Subaru system pulls the wrong way.

What are best donor cars for Weber carb?
Dr. RX replied to Brettm57's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
BMWs are a good source, and we even get some in the Pull-A Part wrecking yards out here in the Seattle area. But I would suggest checking every foreign car in the wrecking yard. Some people out here have found them on the most unlikely vehicles. -
how do you lock the flywheel?
Dr. RX replied to Subafly's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I use to use a real simple method, I had a strip of metal with a hole drilled in each end. I would slip one of the holes over one of the studs for the tranny, then use one of the pressure plate bolts to secure the other end of the strip to the flywheel, that worked pretty well. Subaru has a neat tool, but I've never seen one for sale anywhere. Now I use an air impact wrench, much quicker, less hassle. -
Thanks WJM for that data, anyone else out there???

I have been creating a database of RX's, it has been sometime since I updated it, and there have been sopme new RX owners come to the board. Please take a look at the database and let me know, via e-mail, the information on your RX. http://www.corkysrocks.net/RX%20Database%202.xls E-mail me at corkysrocks@isomedia.com

The links won't take you to Tex's pictures, what I did was right mouse button clip the box with the 'X', then clicked on properties, then copied the file address, then pasted it to my browser, then hit enter, the picture will come up. When you go back to the board, the picture will be there, you'll have to do that for every picture. Car looks nice Tex, I see why you were wanting all those interior parts.

Ok Gurus...figure this one out!
Dr. RX replied to Do It Sidewayz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What is the VIN? There should be a metcal on the door frame (driver side below the striker plate), what is the date shown there? -
Sounds more like a GL-10 to me, the air suspension is the give away there. WJM is right, by the VIN, this is not a RX. GD, the RXs from 85 to 89 are known as gen II RXs in Japan, the gen I RX never made it to US shores.

New Guy, just bought ej20 with questions
Dr. RX replied to Robbie's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Gee, you guys kill me, sending this guy off to some other boards for advice. I current have 3 EJ20G (the correct number for an early turbo EJ20) in my possession. I have had as many a 5 at one time. So, Robbie, fire away, I'll try to answer your questions. First, do you know what type of car this engine came out of? Chances are it was a JDM Legacy or possibly an early JDM Impreza WRX. Either way an air filter from a US model Legacy Turbo will work, as will most of the external engine parts. You can e-mail any futher questions to me directly, corkysrocks@isomedia.com . -
Boy, I think Fox is on LSD or something. Where in the heck did a BRAT enter into this post, the guy is talking about an EA82 series wagon with a dual range 5 speed 4WD tranny. Yes that combination has a 3.90 final ratio, but it is not a BRAT. To answer Gal's question, yes you can put a LSD rear diff into that wagon, but you will have to combine two different rear diffs to do it. I have done this several times, once for edrach. You need to replace the center carrier (the part that contains the LSD unit and bolts to the ring gear) of a LSD 3.70 rear diff with the carrier (the part that contains the open diff and bolts to the ring gear)on the open diff 3.90 that is in the wagon now. You will need to use that rear diff from that wagon to retain the rear ration and clearences. You will also have to grind two notches in the 3.90 case, it will be obvious where to do that once you have the LSD carrier on the 3.90 ring gear and try to install it, or you can look at the case from the 3.70 LSD to see where. Fox also mentioned the US model Legacy Turbo and the XT6. The US model Legacy Turbo manual trannys in the first year had a VLSD 3.90 rear diff. If you can find one of these they will bolt right in with not problem, the problem is finding one, since these were limited to the US only, you may have trouble finding one internationally. The VLSD is strictly for highway use, a few have tried them on offroad vehicles but since the fluid needs to heat up to work, it doesn't work very well at low speeds needed in offroading. The XT6 is suppose to have a mythical 3.90 LSD, a few people have said that they have such a beast, but when I ask for photographic evindence (a picture of the label on the diff which would give the part number), they can never produce it. I hope this helps.

5 lug conversion candidates help
Dr. RX replied to smotocon1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have seen nothing that would tell me that the XT6 crossmember would not bolt to an EA82 car, so go for it and let us know what happens. I'm more curious about an Impreza fitting, but I think it is a little too wide. But heck, maybe spread the rails, then weld that attach point for the Impreza lower arm, then you would have better adjustable front suspension. -

84 Turbo coupe in the junkyard
Dr. RX replied to calebz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
LOL, the two of you need to make sure that the other hasn't posted the same info after the other one has. -
Brian, those wheels look like RS wheels, just painted black. There should be a few sets of those around that you could pick up. Look for a 98 or newer RS owner who has recently upgraded to 17 or 18 inch wheels.

need "aftermarket" parts what will fit?
Dr. RX replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tyler, why didn't you say that instead of saying 'aftermarket'. When you said you "need "aftermarket" parts" I figured you wanted 'aftermarket' parts. Again, it would be a lot of trial and error to figure out which parts from newer Subarus would work on the Gen Is. Subaru did do some strange things like making it so that the EA82 rear disc brakes would work on a Gen II BRAT or a Hatchback, but I'm not sure if they will go as far back as a Gen I. The best thing is to get a set and try to make them work. I've seen people on this board do some amazing things. I know many people thought about doing the 4 to 5 bolt conversion, but before I did it, no one was really sure it would work. So, take that step, go out and see what will work, experiment, modify, have a good time, and let the rest of us know how things turn out. Never be afraid to try. -

Dr. RX replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You are dealing with a car that is 24 years old, most after market manufacturers don't even make parts for cars that old unless they also fit more current models. When dealing with a car that old you need to be able to modify and improvise to make parts fit. You might be lucky and find somethng that does fit, but most of the time there will be some sort of modification required. -
I use the same glue that they use to iinstall windsheilds. but be careful not to put too much on, it will ooze past the edges and look terrible.
