I had an 86 3dr (coupe) with a turbo engine, but no RX markings, but the VIN identifed it as a RX.

Incompetence at the parts department
Dr. RX replied to NoahDL88's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
LOL @ Austin. Lahna mean??? You've got to be kidding, I think I would rather deal with her then anyone else (excluding Jamie). Lahna has always been very helpful and courteous, at least to me. -
All will tell when we get to look at the VIN. By the way, I have one of thsoe Turbo Traction Wagons, it's the wife's car, it's got a rebuilt engine in it with less the 300 mile on the rebuild. It's a sweet wagon, but I hate the digital dash. Come on Dave, let's see the VIN.

West Coast Subaru Show is set!!!!
Dr. RX replied to Qman's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Yep, same here, school didn't start until the Wednesday after Labor Day, then when I went to college, school didn't start until the middle to end of September. I'm going to hear about this from northguy, but, when I was going to school, we did have all these half days and teacher's days, we started school in September and finished in May, first week of June at the latest. Oh Well, getting off track, I have no kids, I'm not in school, so I have no excuss not to be there. -
Not all RXs had badging, I had an 86 3dr that had no RX badging, but the VIN showed it to be a RX. The important numbers and letter to look for in the VIN is 56B in the sixth, seventh, and eighth positions. You can use the following to check the VIN, VIN code All RXs had LSD, from 85 on, it was optional on any turbo car because of the 3.700 ratio, non-turbo had 3.900 ratio rear diffs.

You have to narrow the rear piece like I did for Ultimate RX. As you know Fox, the XT6 tranny mount is three main pieces, all bolting together, you need to narrow the rear piece, while maintaining the center portion of the rear piece as well as maintaining the correct height. I wish I would have taken a picture of it before and after, but I was in too much of a hurry.

Fox, the rear cross member on the XT6 tranny mount needs to be narrowed to fit an EA body.

It's kind of funny, I was over at Ed's house on Sunday, and we were talking about how little advance information goes out about these type of events. And then they wonder why no one shows up. Both Ed and I are waiting to be contacted about being volunteers at the upcoming rally, which is 3 weeks away. I have seen little in the way requests for volunteers, and when you do volunteer, you sit and wait for some feedback on what you'll be doing at the rally. Most times the best you'll get is a time and place to show up, and assignments are made then. If the people want participation, they need to let people know about it well enough ahead of time so that people can make plans to be there.

Yea I read it on the Impreza site the day before it was posted here, so when I asked Zap or Qman to post the info, I already knew it. WOW Snowman, I don't think I've ever heard of a college starting classes before public schools did. Mine also stared toward the end of September. That is a real bummer. -
Junkyardgabe, the engine shown in the picture of that eBay link is not a WRX engine as stated, and it does not have 230hp +. See that black tank behind the engine, the is a water tank for the water to air intercooler, those were only on Legacys. Which the exception of the twin turbo Legacys, these engine had either 200hp or 220hp. This is another example of these engine importers not knowing what it is that they are selling. By the way, I have sent this person several feedbacks on exactly what type of Subaru engine he is selling, but it never seems to soak in.

Looks like I missed out on an RX

I picked up a running 87 RX 3dr from a towing auction, paid $70 for it. -
Turbo, Rebuild or Repalce with stock WRX turbo????
Dr. RX replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If it is a Legacy turbo, it will have the same bolt pattern as the WRX turbo. On the WRXs they used the Mitsubishi turbos, but on the WRX STi Type RAs they used the IHI turbos (same manufacturer as the ones used on the EA82s, but a different size). The type RAs are basically street going race cars. -
Turbo, Rebuild or Repalce with stock WRX turbo????
Dr. RX replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, when you add the fact that you will have to modify you exhaust system to match the bolt pattern on the WRX turbo, and modify your air intake to the turbo, the cost of having the exsisting turbo rebuilt looks better. Actually I don't thing that is a bad price range for getting one rebuilt. -
Anyone close to LAS VEGAS area?
Dr. RX replied to clantieri's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I agree, the place is beautiful, those red sandstone cliffs are great, there are trails all over the place. Like Sweet82 said, St George is only a little ways away, Moab is a weekend trip. While I was down there, since I don't gamble, I sent a lot of time out in the hills. I've been completely around Lake Meade. I can't remember the name of the mountain to the north west of Vegas, but I climbed to the top, there was still some of the wreckage of the B-29 that crashed into in the early 50s. There is actually a lot to do besides gamble. You can also head south along the Colorado River, there are some great trails down there towards Searchlight. -
Good buy, most of the ones on eBay are not that complete, most are missing either the 'Y' pipe or the BOV or both.

Yep, MT biking trails all over the place, but terrible to ride because it rains all the time. You won't have a good time up here because of the rain. Yes, QWest is here, but they have a probelm with their vaults getting flooded by the rain. Oh, did I mention that it RAINS here. In case your are wondering, I'm practicing my 'Don't come to Washington' technique. We natives love it just the way it was, there are too many people here now, so I need to practice up on telling them about all the rain, so they will stay away. -

Gee Chris, I guess you and I are different because I would tell my friend everything that I knew about the place he was heading, good or bad. That way he would know what he was heading into, instead of later finding things out the hard way and regret having ever gone there. Having lived there, I scatch my head everytime I hear about how fast the place is growing. But there is good and bad where ever you live. If you were planning on moving up here, I'd warn you about the rain, and the rain, and the rain. Oh did I say it rains up here. But that is why everything is so green, and we have all these muddy trails to run. By the way, it rains up here. Chris, I knew you didn't mean that you did appreciate our comments, that was why my comment was followed by . -

Gee, see what happens when you try to help a guy. Hey Zeno, let's take our advice somewhere that it is appreciated. I can atest to the sandblashed front paint. I had a 64 Old Cutlass 2dr HT that I took down there from Washington, within 6 months of being there almost all of the paint was sandblasted off the front edge of the hood. By the way, there are some great sand dunes north of Vegas on the road to Moab, not far past the Air Force base, on the right side of the road heading north. I used to take my dirt bike up there. -

You mentioned there are a lot of jobs there, what kind of jobs are those?? Any high tech jobs?? When I was there, the only real industry was gambling, and the normal support industries (gas stations, grocery stores, department stores). But it has been some time since I was there, maybe things have changed. It will be quite a change from CT. I remember one night being in downtown Vegas, looking up to the top of the Mint to see what time it was (there are no clocks in the casinos) and noticed it was 2 AM and 102 degrees. I also remember days in the winter when I came out to my car and it would have ice all over it, by the afternoon, it would be 80 degrees. The other thing I remember was the most cars that had been there awhile had the paint sand blasted off the front of the car from driving in the sand storms that sometimes blow thru there. Oh yea, and when it rains, the water doesn't soak into the ground, it flows on top of it and seeks out the low laying areas, like road intersections. I just though you like to know what to expect before you decide to move. -

Gee Christ, are you going to school there or what? I lived in Las Vegas for 28 months courtesy of Uncle Sam. I guess it's from living in the Pacific Northwest the rest of my live that I can't understand why anyone would want to live there. But I guess if the job paid enough, I'd probably move there. -
Need a "4wd" decal from the back of an EA82

Gee Tex, you are to be one of my sources for decal reproductions if I ever get the stash from Billy. I believe that I got the last RX side decals a in the USA and Japan a couple of years ago, and dummy me, I didn't get them copied I swore that if I every got any more decals, I'd keep one set as a master. So far I have the 4WD TURBO side decal in red, and a few others, maybe ever the rear one you are looking for. If I do, I'll get with Tex and see what he can do. -
Gee, it is funny that you should mention a Toyota rear disc set-up. I found that the rear disc set-up on an early Supra is very close to the same diameter as the Subaru, and it uses the backing plate to support the caliper. I was planning to redrill the backing plate to match a Subaru backing plate and see if that will work. I have the complete set-up, from the brake handle back. I was going to toy with this went I do the 5 bolt conversion on my 86 sedan when the weather gets a little more cooperative. This would allow us to use the Impreza up-grades for the front brakes.

Fox, the XT6 and Legacy, as well as the Impreza are nothing like the EA82 series front knuckle. The EA82 bearings will not fit any of them, the axles are totally different at the outboard ends. There are so many turbo sedans out there that is should be easy to find a turbo tranny wor an EA82 with 25 spline stub axles, why mess with changing the DOJ.
