Racer RX, future plans. No so secret mobile!
Dr. RX replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Marnix, send them to me, I'll post them. -
I heard it today, it definately doesn't sound like a Subaru, but then it doesn't sound like a Harley either. It has a deep throaty sound that raps when the trottle is let off. Sounds good, but definately not like a Subaru.

oil pump madness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Help

Jon, see if it will twist (pull on the filter, towards the ground), if it will do that, the removal will go a lot easier. -

oil pump madness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Help
Dr. RX replied to djbroadus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All fixed now. Boy did he do a good job of breaking the pump. the only part that was not inside the block was a tab of aluminum between the top two bolt holes. I used a screw driver to get what was left to twist in the hole. Then I took my small chisle and got in behind the tab and made little tabs on the chisle. It took some time but it finally started to move out of the hole, so I moved to a bigger hammer and tapped a little harder, within seconds the broken part was on the ground. We cleaned up the mateing surface and installed the new pump. When I left Kyle, he was finishing bolting up the rest of the parts. It is probably running by now. -

intercoller what size is best???
Dr. RX replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes there is a formula for figuring out the size of the I/C, but I can't remember it, it is in one of my books around here somewhere. The problem with using a WRX turbo is that it doesn't have the ability to attach the 90 degree angle piece that you need to an EA82T. Make sure that you find a turbo spyder intake, or have access to a machine shop to modify the N/A intake. If you can find an I/C for a 1800cc to 2200cc engine you should be pretty close with the right size I/C. The real thing to look for is how the I/C is plumbed (where the inlet and outlet are located), some may not work with teh Subaru layout. -

Duh Freak, you think so??? Did you look at Marnix's list, it is the last one on the list. -

So, Marnix, if I took the heads off of an early EJ20G and added them to the a USDM EJ22G (SOHC), they should match perfectly (except for head gasket)? If so, does anyone know where I can get a set of 22B cams??? Are you saying that only the type RAs got the closed deck and the others were open?? -
EJ25/4.111:1 into EA82/3.900:1 Wagon...
Dr. RX replied to incognito's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The EJ25 should (with some grinding on the motormounts) fit the engine crossmember, but you will need the tranny crossmember. The rear peice of the tranny crossmember will need to be narrowed. You will need all of the front wiring harness and the ECU. The rear diff might be different and won't accept the EA82 rear axles, but then all you'll need to do is find a rear diff out of a Legacy, I believe most of the early ones were 4.111 ratio. Did your Impreza have a hydraulic clutch? If so, there will be some mod necessary to get that to work. -
Yea, the biggest problme that someone would have with this conversion is where to put the radiator. The engine is a lot longer and there is nop room for the stock radaiator in the stock location. Subarubrat came up with one solution.

Be careful, there are people out there that are selling engines that they call WRX engines but are actually from a Legacy RS from Japan. Although they look similar, they are not the same, although some parts interchange. Next, do you mean Hatchback or 3dr, the Hatchback looks like a short 2dr station wagon, the 3dr has a fast back sloping rear door with a large glass area. The conversion can be done to either type of car, but it is not cheap, and I wouldn't think that it could be done on a students budget. A real WRX engine can start at about $5,000.00 and go up from there, add a few thousand more for the tranny, and a couple of hundred for the rear differential and you have bought the basic parts for the conversion. If you don't get a complete from wiring harness and ECU, then you will have to go aftermarket, those cost over $1,000.00. So, now before you have even put anything into the car, you'll have spent almost $8,000.00. I would think, having done something similar that you'd spend at least another $2,000.00, in in all you are looking at $10,000 and for that price you could pick up a 98 Impreza RS.

WOW Marnix, great info, I'm going to have to copy this for safe keeping. It show that the EJ20G had both open and closed decking, is there any info about which years had what? It looks like the older engines had the closed deck and the newer ones have the open (or semi-open) deck. -
EJ engine EA tranny- I'm going in...
Dr. RX replied to RallyJusty's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I didn't read it in your post, but you do know that the input shaft on the EJ series tranny is actually higher on the tranny then that EA series. So I would suggest bolting eveything up to the engine (adapter plate, and clutch assemble, then try to put the EA tranny in place. Now you should be able to mark the hole locations for the EA tranny on the adapter plate. -

Well I just read through the whole post from NASIOC, and nowhere in there, although it was asked many times, did any one say which heads fit the EJ22T engine. By the way, I seem to alway get the closed deck/ open deck thing mixed up, looks like I did it again. But I did see some info there that supports me. One guy stated that he thought the correct designation for the EJ22T was EJ22K, if so, the would make it compatable with the EJ20K (the version 4 STi engine). There was another who called the EJ25 an EJ257, which would make it similar to the EJ207 from the version 5 STi engeine. So it looks like the heads for the EJ22T(K) need to come from a version 4 STi engine or a pre 97 WRX engine. -

Dr. RX replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good plan, but I think I get a vote to if it is worthy of the UltimateRX name. Why a version 5 STi, anything special about that version? The version 4 had a EJ20K engine, version 5 and on have the EJ207 engine, the EJ20K would be more compatable with an EJ22T engine. If I remember correctly, the EJ20K and the EJ22T are open deck engines and the EJ207 is a closed deck engine. While the closed deck help it produce 20 more horse power, the cooling hole pattern does not match that of an open deck engine so you would have trouble using the heads from the EJ207 on an EJ22T block, plus you would lose the advantage of the EJ207 engine. The engine in the 22B was a version of the EJ20K engine, if that is what you are trying to re-create. -
The EA82 1800cc pistons fit in the EA81 1800cc engine. I'm running EA81T pistons in one of me EA82Ts.

swapping 4wd parts into a 2wd (gen 1)
Dr. RX replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Heck anything is possible if you work hard enough to make it happen. I'm not sure about the older cars, but the EA81 series cars had all the attach points for 4WD on the 2WD cars, it was pretty much a bolt up change over. -
Actually this is a sign that the car thinks that you are not worthy of owning it. In which case you need to have me come over and tow it to my place. JK Yep, sounds like a driver side timing belt.
-
Sean, not upset, just letting you know where I was coming from.

You could also try http://1stsubaruparts.com/ , they show a piston and pin for around $46.00, but a complete ring set is $157.00.

How does the fuel cut work?
Dr. RX replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey Sexy Texy, are you talking about the cut out related to engine speed?? Are you trying to blow up your engine?? By the way, it didn't sound right the other day when you were over at my place. It sounded very tinny, like it is really worn out and lots of things rattling. -
ru4X4ever, yes I know what a S64 is, I use to fly CH47s, OH6s, UH1Ds, so I think I know what it is. I thought Columbia Helicopters was there in Oregon, maybe I was thinking of Everegreen. When did Evergreen move to Washington?? So where do you work?? I used to see some helicopters at the Albany airport, don't know if they are still there. I actually bought a part Brantley B2 for the Brantley that I had as a personal helicopter at the time. A friend and i were talking the other day about that company that took S58s and coverted them to flying campers, some with turbine conversions. We thought you could just get a S64 and pick up a motorhome and fly anyway.
