OK, I'm back, I don't know if you are working or not so I'll call you tonight.

Actually I think the boss is in the t-housing casting, it just need to be machined out, The tube is a press fit, but to do that would require removing the intake and taking it to a machine shop. You could do as Rob said, drill and tap it, but you would need to make sure that the flow rate was the same, so you may get a little thin trying to get the right size fitting in there.

For those who think the Legacy is too big and heavy to rally, the first world championship that Subaru won was in a Legacy RS, which was running the EJ20G engine, like the one I put in Ultimate RX.

Don't know why you were asking the BYBs, I think that I was one of the first, if not the first to do this conversion in the USA, it is even on my web site. I have heard, but have not done it yet, that if you replace that XT6 springs with the ones from your RX struts, you will get back most of the heigth. You might also try different struts. My next conversion with be with Impreza struts, axles and knuckles, using only the lower arm, calipers and tie rod ends from a XT6. Legacy struts will work too. If you are not working on a budget, you can get those coil over adjustable struts for an Impreza to use up front. For the rear, you still need the XT6 parts. But I am working on a rear parking brake with may also reduce the numer of XT6 pars needed.

Impreza is the only choice, there are so much more after market stuff out there for them then the EA82 series (RX included). The XT6 is about the opposite, there is almost nothing out there for them. Stock for stock race, RX vs XT6 vs which Impreza???

Most GL-10s didn't come with a D/R 5 speed, if there is one, it was a special option. All GL-10's that I have seen have the push button 5 speed. The LSD was not standard until 89, so that would be an option also. The center locking diff didn't come along until 87, in GL-10s they were usually single range trannys. The GL-10 were the luxury models, they had all the interior bells and whistle, the trip computer, digital dashes (uck!!!!), sun roofs, air suspension, crushed velor seats. It would be easier to get a GL-10 closer to a RX then the other way around.

Sounds good to me, I'll check it when I get back.

Unless you need it for transportation, can you wait until I get back from Oregon, I should be back in the afernoon of the 23rd. I realize it is a holiday, so we may not be able together until the 26th or later. I'll help you get my old buddy back into shape. It sound like it needs a seal job, a lot easier on an EA81 then on an EA82. You might try putting a couple of cans of gas drier (turns the water into an alcohol mixture so it will burn). There is also an electrical drier that sprays on and evaporates quick, you might try that in the distributor, and all the electrical connections. I'll see if I can get ahold of the guy I sould it to and see if he still has the documentation that I gave him.

You are the fourth owner of Lewy, I was the second. I bought it from the daughter one the original owner, he was getting old and started to drive by feel, you'll notice a few places where there are small bumps in the body panels. Did you get the orginal documents from the former owner?? I'm sure that I gave them to him.
-
Nope, the D/R 4 speed was stock, I only installed the EA81. I'll get in touch with you when I get back from Oregon, we can talk about the car then. I think I still have some of the stuff I was going to up date Lewy was before I sold it. It was really hard to sell Lewy, I wish the wife would have let me keep it as well as the turbo. Lewy was a great little car while I had it. Hey Ryer-s, I would do the brakes before you put the EJ20 into it, if not you may not live to enjoy all that power.

hesitation/stumble problem w/ 86 RX
Dr. RX replied to Ben L's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Not sure if this is taht same problem, but on my wife's turbo wagon (85), the engine was dying on her at idle. I checked everything fuel related and came up empty. The the car totally died on her, the battery was totally drained, so the first thing that I thought was alternator. I always keep spares around, so I took one of the spares, replaced the one in the car, jump stared it, it ran fine. It has not had the stalling problem since. It appears that some of the electronic controls for the fuel injection were not getting the correct voltage, so they were not functioning properly. With winter coming on, batteries have an extra load on them, and tend to show their weakness, so check the electrical system too. -
LSD did not come standard on any automatic turbos.

Who's done the EA81 or 82 to EJ22 swap?
Dr. RX replied to tjdrury's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I haven't put an EJ22 into an EA series car, but I have put an EJ20G into an EA 82 series car. The engine was put into an 87 RX. No the EA series trannys will not bolt up to the EJ series engine without a very rare adapter. On my conversion, I had to remove the A/C condensor in front of the radiator and put a set of pusher type electric fans, but then I was using a two row radiator. I have seen similar conversions done in Australia where they were able to get the stock radiator and fans to work (I think that they used two auxilary electric fans). Installing an EJ22 would run into the same problems. Also you will need to get a Legacry or XT6 tranny mount and narrow the rear section to get the EJ tranny to mount in the EA28, also the driveline needs to be shortened 55mm. -
WOW, $65 a piece for adaptors??? That would be $260 for all four, for that price you could get all the parts you need to make an all Subaru parts 4 to 5 bolt conversion.
-
BW Medic, and what am I??? Chopped liver???? As far as I know, I am the only one on this board in the USA that has successfully installed an EJ series engine and tranny into an EA series car. JonnieBlue, it would probably cost too much for shipping, but I have a flip clip from a 94 JDM WRX STi (250hp). That would include the engine, tranny, complete front wiring harness and the ECU, all for $2000, but you'll have to arrange the shipping from Seattle. Actually the driveline from the EA series works fine, but needs to be shortened 55mm. You'll also need the tranny support from a XT6. These kind of projects are one of a kind cars and as such, are not as desireable to the general public for resale, in other words, there is only a small group of buyers for these type of cars. But you are building it for yourself, not for resale, so why worry about that.

engine swapping on my b-day arrg!
Dr. RX replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Next, boy that sucks, I hate working in the cold rain, I refuse to work in the snow. Good luck. Maybe you can rebuild the bown head gasket engine to get it ready to put back in when the 290k engine gives up the ghost. -
question about RX sedans
Dr. RX replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OOPPPSSS, I see, it is the panels inside the trunk that you are lokking for, I thought you were talking about the plastic panel between the tail lights. :o -
question about RX sedans
Dr. RX replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It should say 4WD TURBO on the panel, the RXs had a same RX decal in the lower left corner. Yes, any of the panels will work, but if you can find a GL-10 4WD Turbo, you could get very close to want should be there. -
Favorite tools and other "must haves"
Dr. RX replied to Chris W.'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My favorite tool is a 12mm X 14mm combination box end, that is triple chrome plated. Qman picked it up out of my tool box once, and from the look on my face, he knew that was my favorite. -
Ej22t?
Dr. RX replied to tjdrury's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
To answer your first question, NO!!! The engine in the 22B is based off of the EJ20Gs that were used in the WRXs, besides displacement and overall engine layout, I believe that they have little in common. -
No, the rears on Legacys and Imprezas are true struts, not shocks like on the rear of the EA82s and XT6. I've looked at the rear suspension of an Impreza, and with a lot (I mean A LOT) of work, it could be made to fit under an RX. But then you'd have to fabricate rear strut towers, and a rear tower brace. Not sure if it is worth all the trouble to do it, other then to just be able to say you did it.
-
I don't think the 3dr rear spoiler with work on a sedan.
-
Any non-air Legacy front strut and any Impreza front strut ( I don't think I have ever seen an Impreza with air suspension), FWD or AWD. 89 backward Subaru, yes this is the same bolt pattern as the WRX, Impreza, Forrester, Legacy, or Outback, but not the SVX.
-
You can either use the struts from a 2WD XT6 or a Legacy or Impreza. The Legacy and Impreza struts will be a little tight going on to the XT6 knuckle, but they will bolt up and work. Or you can just use the lower arms, tie rod ends, ball joints and front brake calipers from the XT6 and use the knuckles, axles and struts from an Impreza. I had Tex try that set up while he was doing his conversion and it worked just fine. The Impreza axles are like 4mm longer then the EA82 axles.
