  1. Oh my God I would kill to go to a show like that. I'll bet there wasn't a single attendee who wasn't the coolest car person. Nothing but pure enthusiasts go to shows like that. And Bryan, please help me out and tell me what that little light blue car is. I'm stumped.
  2. Hang on a second guys... If the coolant was actually boiling, it could be as minor as the fans not working. Do the fans work? Did the guy who did the work forget to plug the fans in after putting the car back together? If so, is there a blown fuse?
  3. No! You need to tighten that bolt to 110 ft-lbs. Ignore the FSM on this, it is wrong. People who have tightened that bolt down to 80 ft-lbs have had it come loose later.
  4. If you elect to have the water pump done, then the radiator will have to be drained of course, since the water pump attaches to the bottom radiator hose. New coolant will have to be added to at least make up for that loss, needless to say. Also, if you want the front oil seals replaced, the tech will likely remove the radiator to give himself more room to change them. But if you just want the timing belt replaced and nothing else, then no, you will not lose any coolant.
  5. The engine should actually spin slower with the plugs out, because the compression kickback won't help the engine along. Instead of pulling the plugs out, just pull the wire off the coil, then crank the engine for about 20 seconds or so.
  6. Consider yourself fortunate to have seen one with your own two eyes. I haven't...
  7. The reason why I say mass airflow sensor, is that when the ECU gets a bad reading from that sensor, it goes into a kind of "safe mode" and does not let the engine rev past a certain RPM. It's usually 3k rpm, but each car has its own little idiosyncrasies, so yours might allow it to go to 4k rpm.
  8. Just like most other bushings, you'll probably have to have a shop or use a hydraulic press to get it out.
  9. I can't remember which ones were which, but some were on the driver's side of the car by the master cylinder, and some were on the passenger side, down underneath the spare tire.
  10. There have been some problems with the stereo/HVAC controls. I have a friend who has had the entire unit replaced twice under warranty on his mom's 05 Legacy 2.5i. Since this is the first time Subaru has ever integrated the stereo and HVAC controls into one unit, they probably have some bugs that they need to work out. As far as mechanical problems, I haven't heard of anything unusual. I've heard of a wheel bearing here and there, which is a typical Subaru thing, but that's about it.
  11. The only way to "diagnose" a bad wheel bearing is to listen for the sound you mentioned. They are sealed and can't really be checked without removing them. Besides, jacking the car up to let the wheels spin freely will not only take the weight off of them and therefore cause them to be silent, but wheel bearing noise usually isn't audible until about 15-20mph anyway, so just letting the engine idle the free wheels along won't make the noise happen at all.
  12. Any and all 4cyl EJ engines have 5 main bearings. Why would you want it to have 3 main bearings?? My unrealistic side would want to get one of these 1.5 engines and see how much power I can get out of it
  13. No. All 90-94 struts will bolt in directly. The 90-91 cars have tapered springs in the rear, and the 92-94 don't. So the strut mounts are different. But the bolt pattern is the same on both and fits into either car the same.
  14. This is correct. I saw a Chrysler Town and Country in it. The STi grill looks okay on the front, but the other grills are not growing on me. I guess Subaru wants to make all its cars unappealing to me
  15. [Offtopic]I've NEVER been to a drive-in movie theatre before [/Offtopic] Absolutely beautiful car! Good work!
  16. If you're looking to buy another GenI, then you moved to the wrong state my friend I have seen 5 GenI cars in FL, in person, in my whole life. Only two have been wagons (mine and a red one, early 70's, and that was at least 7-8 years ago), the rest have been Brats. One was Seahag's Brat, which was for sale in a used car lot that was literally a 30 second walk from my house, and another one that I see driving around every once in a while. Then there's Machine Age Victim, who's in your area, with his GenI wagon.
  17. If you want power that bad out of a GenI, just bite the bullet and swap an EJ into it. These engines were not made to make power.
  18. You all might also find it interesting to know that you will likely be able to use Toyota starter contacts for your Subaru starter, since they both use Nippondenso starters. I used Toyota contacts on the white wagon's starter last year, but the new contacts didn't help coz the solenoid was bad, I guess. It started, but it still clicked, and took some playing around until it finally started.
  19. Where are you all finding this tool for the brakes? I've asked in several places and no one even knows what I'm talking about...
