Not intended to be fast... There, how's that? I know how fast your cars were Will. I ran the Dragon once with you, remember? The only thing is though, getting 250hp out of an EA82T and making it reliable (as in, last longer than 20-30k miles) is a LOT of work and hassle. There isn't an EJ engine out there that couldn't make 250hp reliably, provided it's tuned right. Even a turbo'ed NA.

I was thinking about doing an EA82T too, but I decided against it. I dunno, it just seems to me like EA engines are workhorses and nothing else. I love EA Subarus, I own two. They're charismatic, quirky, and fun to drive in their own right. But they're not fast :-\. They were never intended for speed. If Subaru wanted them to make big power, they would have done a little better than 2-valve heads and 3-bearing bottom ends. I'm now getting ready to do an EJ turbo project, but it will be a very weird EJ turbo project, that no one would "bother" doing...

I should have gone into detail... I just finished putting front wheel bearings and 4 struts in this car, along with new front ABS sensors that I screwed up, and I also changed the front brake pads, and changed the fluid, and it just got an oil change. I think it's okay to give it to her with a ruined wheelstud :-\ All in all, if anyone got the raw end of the deal, it was me I'm getting enough money out of it to pay for all the parts I just ordered for the 79...

The white Legacy wagon is officially sold, dropped off at its new owners' place of work tonight. But don't think I didn't screw one more thing up! I had an issue bleeding the brakes last night, so I carefully drove it to work today with a mushy pedal, and the mechanic told me the left rear bleeder screw was clogged. He found one in his parts stash and put it on for me, and thanks to Kelly, our fantastic Subaru service advisor, labor only cost me $20 Our alignment rack was busy today, so I also had her arrange for an alignment at the neighborhood Action Gator - Goodyear shop... who also rotated my tires that I just rotated So I rush home to re-rotate them (they already needed it pretty bad before I did all this, and this is a 4EAT), and I broke a wheelstud on the right rear wheel. Oh well, I don't give a rat's rump roast, it's not my car anymore. I am a little sad to see it go, overall, it was a very good car to us, but at the same time, it's no big whoop. I never grew that attached to it anyway. So, back down to 3 Subarus in the driveway, and I can say, 3 is enough right now

No correction needed. You are right. But there are countless EJ22 and EJ25 "Japanese" engines for sale on eBay all the time, when they're really USDM engines. Those are the ones I'm referring to. If it's an EJ20TT or something like that, no it is not USDM, but it doesn't necessarily have to be JDM either

Kinda. When they got here, their bodywork changed a little bit, and their name had changed to "Justy" I got one pic of a Star to come up in Google... -
I have to be weird here and say that I go by hub design Seriously. The 360 cars are obviously old-school The EA's all have the 4 X 140, so they're old-school. The EF's (Justy) has a 4 X 100 pattern, but if you look at a Justy hub, you can't help but notice the striking resemblance to the EA cars. It's old-school too. Now here's the kicker. Most die-hard Subie guys regard the XT6 as between old-school and new school. It was the transition from the EA to the EJ. It still technically has an EA engine; the ER27 is nothing more than an EA82 with two extra cylinders. But some of the external engine stuff (an IAC valve, the exhaust manifolds, etc.) are very similar to the EJ's. And here of course is the hub part: the XT6 has 5 X 100 lug pattern. Yes it still has the old control arm setup (that's why EA guys can use XT6 stuff), but also, Legacy brakes can apparently be adapted to the XT6 hubs If you wanna get right down to it, the XT6 is technically still old-gen. But it's more new-gen than any other old-gen Everything else, 5 X 100 and 5 X 114.3, is all new-school. Hope it's all clear as mud now

But not everyone is going to use Nissan engine designations . We should be happy we get as informative engine designations as we do. How about Toyota? 1ZZ-FE?? Or Mitsubishi? 4G63?? Those tell you absolutely nothing. You could drop the CR in an EJ18 by using different heads, like I'm going to do (eventually ). The EJ18 heads don't flow worth crap anyway.

Do you have a source for that? I've never heard that before. If you're finding these used "Japanese" engines on eBay , then there's a 99% chance they're not Japanese. People will put anything in an ad to sell it, but I can pretty much guarantee you those engines are just out of a regular USDM Subaru.

The P1000 never made it here. The first Subaru car in the US was the 360 in the late 60's. -

The first of the Leone series goes by several different names, the FF1, the Star, or just by engine designations, 1000, 1100, etc. But yeah, that's essentially what we discuss in this forum -

A 98 EJ22 is interference. I've heard of a single DOHC EJ25 engine going through THREE sets of headgaskets. It is a serious problem, there's no doubt about it. The swap can be done mechanically, for sure. The saying that ANY EJ engine can bolt up to ANY EJ transmission is indeed true. If you're getting a later EJ22, then at least you're swapping OBDII to OBDII, so that won't be near as rough as far as wiring goes.

Tribecas are not meeting projected sales figures. Subaru is changing some stuff around for 07 to try to spark more interest. Unfortunately, the 06 Impreza is selling like crazy, so the Edsel face isn't necessarily going away Subaru's hybrid this is mostly an experiment right now, and that's mostly due to Toyota.

You'd have a hell of an issue going from OBDII to OBDI. Any particular reason why you want to do this? Is this a 98 Forester in question, with the Phase I EJ25? I'm a huge fan of the EJ22 too, but I still dunno if it's worth it to put a less-powerful, older engine in place of the current one. Besides, some emissions-testing states say it's illegal to swap in an engine that's older than the car.
